교회소개(5: )그들에게 이르기를 우리는 이방인의 손에 팔린 우리 형제 유다 사람들을 (우리의 힘을 다하여) 도로 찾았거늘 너희는 너희 형제를 팔고자 하느냐 더구나 우리의 손에 팔리게 하겠느냐 하매 그들이 잠잠하여 말이 없기로
and said: "(As far as possible), we have bought back our Jewish brothers who were sold to the Gentiles. Now you are selling your brothers, only for them to be sold back to us!" They kept quiet, because they could find nothing to say.
(5: )나보다 먼저 있었던 총독들은 백성에게서, 양식과 포도주와 또 은 사십 세겔을 그들에게서 빼앗았고 또한 그들의 종자들도 백성을 압제하였으나 (나는 하나님을 경외하므로) 이같이 행하지 아니하고
But the earlier governors--those preceding me--placed a heavy burden on the people and took forty shekels of silver from them in addition to food and wine. Their assistants also lorded it over the people. But (out of reverence for God) I did not act like that.
(6: )이는 그들이 다 (우리를 두렵게 하고자 하여) 말하기를 그들의 손이 피곤하여 역사를 중지하고 이루지 못하리라 함이라 이제 내 손을 힘있게 하옵소서 하였노라
They were all trying (to frighten us), thinking, "Their hands will get too weak for the work, and it will not be completed." But I prayed,"Now strengthen my hands."
(7: )내 하나님이 (내 마음을 감동하사) 귀족들과 민장들과 백성을 모아 그 계보대로 등록하게 하시므로 내가 처음으로 돌아온 자의 계보를 얻었는데 거기에 기록된 것을 보면
So my God (put it into my heart) to assemble the nobles, the officials and the common people for registration by families. I found the genealogical record of those who had been the first to return. This is what I found written there:
(7: )어떤 족장들은 (역사를 위하여 보조하였고) 총독은 금 천 드라크마와 대접 오십과 제사장의 의복 오백삼십 벌을 보물 곳간에 드렸고
Some of the heads of the families (contributed to the work). The governor gave to the treasury 1,000 drachmas of gold, 50 bowls and 530 garments for priests.
(8: )이스라엘 자손이 자기들의 성읍에 거주하였더니 일곱째 달에 이르러 모든 백성이 일제히 수문 앞 광장에 모여 학사 에스라에게 여호와께서 이스라엘에게 명령하신 (모세의 율법책)을 가져오기를 청하매
all the people assembled as one man in the square before the Water Gate. They told Ezra the scribe to bring out the Book of (the Law of Moses), which the LORD had commanded for Israel.
(8: )백성이 율법의 말씀을 듣고 다 우는지라 총독 느헤미야와 제사장 겸 학사 에스라와 백성을 가르치는 레위 사람들이 모든 백성에게 이르기를 오늘은 너희 하나님 여호와의 성일이니 (슬퍼하지 말며 울지 말라) 하고
Then Nehemiah the governor, Ezra the priest and scribe, and the Levites who were instructing the people said to them all, "This day is sacred to the LORD your God. (Do not mourn or weep)." For all the people had been weeping as they listened to the words of the Law.
