The New Commandment for Young Disciples
요한복음 John 13:31–38
사랑하는 성도 여러분, 우리는 인생의 갈림길에서 “어떻게 살아야 할까?”라는 질문 앞에 서 있습니다. 특히 청년의 시절은 인생의 방향과 가치를 결정짓는 매우 중요한 시기입니다.
Dear brothers and sisters, we often find ourselves at a crossroads in life, asking, “How should I live?” This question is especially pressing during our youth, a season when life’s direction and values are shaped.
오늘 우리가 함께 나눌 요한복음의 말씀은, 예수님께서 십자가를 지시기 전, 제자들에게 남기신 유언과도 같은 말씀입니다.
Today’s passage from the Gospel of John contains Jesus’ final words to His disciples before going to the cross—words like a last will and testament.
이 말씀 속에서 예수님은 제자들, 그리고 오늘의 우리 청년들에게 ‘새 계명’을 주십니다. 이 새 계명은 단지 “서로 사랑하라”는 도덕적 가르침이 아닙니다.
In these words, Jesus gives His disciples—and young people today—a “new commandment.” This new commandment is not just a moral teaching to “love one another.”
예수님처럼 아무도 가지 않는 길을 개척하는 용기, 자기 의가 아니라 받은 사랑에 감격하여 서로 사랑하는 태도, 그리고 지금은 부족하고 미약해도 끝까지 주님을 따르는 충성된 삶을 살아가라는 부르심입니다.
It is the courage to walk the path no one else dares to take, just as Jesus did, An attitude of love, not from self-righteousness but from a deep gratitude for the love we’ve received, And a calling to live a faithful life, following the Lord to the end, even when we feel weak and unworthy.
이 계명은 하나님의 사랑을 힘입어야만 실천할 수 있는 길이며, 그 사랑은 곧 공동체를 살리고, 세상 속에서 하나님께 영광을 돌리는 길이 됩니다.
This commandment can only be lived out by the power of God’s love, And that love is what builds up the church and brings glory to God in the world.
오늘 우리는 그 부르심 앞에 서서, 예수님이 우리에게 어떤 길을 보여주셨는지, 그리고 어떻게 살아야 하는지를 함께 살펴보려 합니다.
Today, we stand before this calling, To look at the path Jesus has shown us, And to reflect on how we should live in response.
1. 새 계명은 아무도 가지 않는 길을 가는 개척자의 용기를 필요로 합니다 (요한복음 13:31–33)
1. The New Commandment Requires the Courage to Walk the Path No One Else Takes (John 13:31–33)
요한복음 13장 31–33절은 예수님께서 유다가 떠난 직후, 곧 십자가의 길을 앞에 두고 제자들에게 남기신 말씀입니다.
John 13:31–33 records Jesus’ words to His disciples immediately after Judas had left—just before Jesus would walk the path of the cross.
31 그가 나간 후에 예수께서 이르시되 지금 인자가 영광을 받았고 하나님도 인자로 말미암아 영광을 받으셨도다
31 When he was gone, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man is glorified and God is glorified in him.
32 만일 하나님이 그로 말미암아 영광을 받으셨으면 하나님도 자기로 말미암아 그에게 영광을 주시리니 곧 주시리라
32 If God is glorified in him, God will glorify the Son in himself, and will glorify him at once.
33 작은 자들아 내가 아직 잠시 너희와 함께 있겠노라 너희가 나를 찾을 것이나 일찍이 내가 유대인들에게 너희는 내가 가는 곳에 올 수 없다고 말한 것과 같이 지금 너희에게도 이르노라
33 “My children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot come.”
이 말씀은 유다가 예수님을 배반하러 나간, 감정적으로 가장 고통스럽고 외로운 순간에 선포되었습니다. 그런데 놀랍게도 예수님은 그때 “이제 인자가 영광을 받았다”고 선언하십니다.
These words were spoken at one of the most emotionally painful and lonely moments—right after Judas left to betray Jesus. And yet, astonishingly, Jesus says at that very moment, “Now the Son of Man is glorified.”
이는 세상의 시각과는 정반대되는, 역설적인 영광입니다.
This is a glory that completely contradicts the world’s understanding—a paradoxical glory.
보통 영광은 성공이나 칭찬, 높아짐에서 온다고 생각하지만, 예수님은 배신과 고난, 그리고 십자가의 길 속에서 하나님의 뜻을 이루는 진짜 영광을 보셨습니다.
The world often associates glory with success, praise, or elevation. But Jesus saw true glory in betrayal, suffering, and walking the path of the cross in obedience to the will of God.
영광은 고난을 피할 때가 아니라, 하나님의 뜻에 끝까지 순종할 때 주어지는 하늘의 선물입니다.
Glory is not the reward for avoiding hardship—it is heaven’s gift for those who fully obey the will of God.
예수님은 제자들에게 “너희는 내가 가는 곳에 올 수 없다”고 말씀하십니다. 지금 주님은 제자들도 감당할 수 없는 길, 곧 십자가의 길을 홀로 걸어가려 하십니다.
Jesus tells His disciples, “Where I am going, you cannot come.” He is preparing to walk the path of the cross—a road too difficult for them to follow at the moment.
그 길은 고난과 외로움의 길이었고, 사람들의 눈에는 실패처럼 보였지만, 그 길이야말로 모든 사람을 살리고, 하나님의 사랑을 가장 깊이 드러내는 길이었습니다.
It was a road marked by suffering and isolation—one that appeared as failure to many. But it was in fact the path that would save the world and reveal God’s love in its deepest form.
성도 여러분, 청년 여러분, 우리에게도 때때로 그런 길이 놓여 있습니다.
Dear brothers and sisters, especially young people, sometimes we too are faced with such a path.
사람들이 피하는 선택, 당장 눈에 띄지 않는 작은 순종, 누구도 알아주지 않는 자리에서 묵묵히 감당하는 일들 말입니다.
Choices others avoid, small acts of obedience that go unnoticed, and responsibilities silently carried out where no one is watching.
예배 후, 모르는 교우에게 먼저 다가가 인사하는 일, 말없이 남겨진 쓰레기를 치우는 일, 공동체 안에서 의견이 맞지 않는 사람을 끝까지 품는 일, 청년 모임이나 부서 봉사에서 누구보다 먼저 와서 마지막까지 남는 헌신,
Saying hello first to someone you don’t know after worship, Quietly picking up trash that others leave behind, Embracing someone in the community whose opinions differ from yours, Being the first to arrive and the last to leave in youth ministry or church service,
혹은 가정에서 먼저 사과하고 화해를 청하는 용기— 이런 일들이 바로 오늘 우리에게 주어진 좁은 길, 그리고 새 계명의 시작입니다.
Or having the courage to apologize first and seek peace at home—These are the narrow paths given to us today—the starting point of the new commandment.
하나님의 영광은 작은 선택 속에서 드러납니다.
God’s glory is revealed through small decisions.
오늘날 많은 청년들이 새로운 길을 개척하고, 세상에 없던 것을 이루고자 합니다.
Many young people today dream of pioneering new paths and achieving things the world has never seen.
그 자체는 귀한 도전입니다. 그러나 중요한 것은 무엇을 하느냐보다, 누구를 위해, 어떤 마음으로 하느냐입니다.
That is a noble pursuit. But what matters more than what you do is for whom you do it and with what heart.
내 야망과 사람들에게 인정받고자 하는 욕망에서 시작한 열심은, 열심히 해도 인정받지 못하면 쉽게 낙심하고, 남과 비교하며 교만이나 분노에 빠지게 됩니다.
Passion driven by personal ambition or the desire for recognition often leads to disappointment, comparison, pride, or anger when it goes unacknowledged.
하지만 하나님의 뜻에 순종하여 걸어가는 길은, 비록 외롭고 미약해 보여도 그 자체로 하나님께 영광이 됩니다.
But walking in obedience to God’s will—even if it seems lonely or insignificant—brings glory to Him in itself.
성경은 이렇게 말합니다: “그런즉 너희가 먹든지 마시든지 무엇을 하든지 다 하나님의 영광을 위하여 하라.” (고전 10:31)
The Bible says: “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” (1 Corinthians 10:31, NIV)
하나님께 영광을 돌리는 삶이란, 결국 자기 만족을 넘어 타인을 위한 선택을 하는 것입니다.
To glorify God means to go beyond self-centered living and make choices that benefit others.
공동체를 살리고, 사랑을 실천하며, 아무도 맡지 않으려는 자리를 기꺼이 채우는 것— 바로 그런 삶이 세상 속에서 “하나님의 자녀답다”는 칭찬을 받게 합니다.
Reviving the community, practicing love, and willingly stepping into roles that others avoid—That is the kind of life that leads the world to say, “Surely, they are children of God.”
바나바는 사도 바울이 복음 사역자로 받아들여지지 못할 때, 누구보다 먼저 그를 믿어주고 초대교회에 연결해 주었습니다.
Barnabas was the first to believe in Paul and connect him to the early church when no one else accepted him as a gospel worker.
자신이 중심에 서기보다, 조용히 한 걸음 물러서서 다른 이의 사역을 세워준 사람이었습니다. 그 사랑의 중재는 교회 역사에 커다란 전환점을 가져왔습니다.
Instead of standing at the center, he quietly stepped aside to lift up another’s ministry. That loving mediation brought about a major turning point in church history.
장 루이즈(Jean Louise)는 아프리카의 외딴 마을에서 간호사로 일하며 수십 년간 아이들의 건강을 책임졌습니다.
Jean Louise served as a nurse in a remote African village for decades, caring for the health of children.
아무도 알아주지 않았지만, 훗날 그 마을에서 자란 의사가 이렇게 말했습니다: “그분의 조용한 섬김이 제 인생의 방향을 바꿨습니다.”
“No one really noticed her,” but years later, a doctor who grew up in that village said, “Her quiet service changed the direction of my life.”
그녀는 아무도 가지 않는 곳에서, 아무도 하지 않던 일을 묵묵히 감당했습니다. 그 삶이야말로 하나님의 영광을 위한 진짜 개척자의 모습이었습니다.
She humbly carried out work that no one else would do, in a place no one else wanted to go. That is the true image of a pioneer for the glory of God.
사랑하는 성도 여러분, 청년 여러분, 오늘 우리 앞에 놓인 작은 순종의 기회와 누구도 맡으려 하지 않는 자리를 가볍게 여기지 맙시다.
Dear friends, let us not take lightly the opportunities for small obedience or roles no one wants to take.
그곳에 하나님의 뜻이 있고, 그 자리에서 하나님의 영광이 드러납니다.
God’s will is present in those places, and His glory is revealed through them.
예수님께서 먼저 걸으신 그 길, 우리도 함께 걸어가기를 소망합니다.
May we walk the same road Jesus walked before us.
함께 주방 설거지를 감당하는 일, 찬양팀 뒷정리를 묵묵히 해주는 사람, 중보기도 명단을 잊지 않고 붙들고 기도하는 이름 없는 손, 이 모든 자리에서 하나님은 우리를 기억하시고 기뻐하십니다.
Serving in the kitchen, quietly cleaning up after the praise team—The unseen hand that holds onto a prayer list and intercedes faithfully—In all these places, God sees us and takes delight.
하나님은 지금도 누군가가 먼저 그 길을 걷기를 기다리고 계십니다. 비록 외롭고 이해받지 못할지라도, 그 길이 하나님의 뜻이라면, 우리가 먼저 걸어야 할 믿음의 길입니다.
God is still waiting for someone to take the first step down that path. Even if it feels lonely and misunderstood, if it is God’s will, it is the path we must walk in faith.
그리고 바로 그 길에서, 하나님은 새로운 일을 시작하시고, 하나님의 나라를 확장해 가실 것입니다. 우리 모두가 예수님처럼 새로운 길을 여는 개척자의 삶을 살 수 있기를 소망합니다.
And on that path, God will begin something new and expand His kingdom. May we all live as pioneers, opening new paths like Jesus did.
2. 새 계명은 주님이 우리를 사랑하신 것처럼 서로 사랑하라는 요청입니다 (요한복음 13:34–35)
2. The New Commandment Is a Call to Love One Another as the Lord Has Loved Us (John 13:34–35)
예수님은 십자가의 사랑을 본받아 서로 사랑하라는 새 계명을 주시며, 이 사랑을 통해 제자됨의 증거를 세상에 나타내라고 명하셨습니다.
Jesus gave us a new commandment to love one another as He loved us through the cross, and through that love, He said the world would know we are His disciples.
34 새 계명을 너희에게 주노니 서로 사랑하라, 내가 너희를 사랑한 것 같이 너희도 서로 사랑하라.
34 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.
35 너희가 서로 사랑하면 이로써 모든 사람이 너희가 내 제자인 줄 알리라.”
35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” (John 13:34–35, NIV)
예수님은 제자들과 함께하신 마지막 밤, 십자가를 앞에 두고 제자들에게 깊은 사랑의 유언을 남기셨습니다.
On His final night with the disciples, just before the cross, Jesus left them with a command full of deep, personal love.
“새 계명을 너희에게 주노니 서로 사랑하라, 내가 너희를 사랑한 것 같이 너희도 서로 사랑하라.”
“A new command I give you: Love one another, as I have loved you, so you must love one another.”
이미 구약에도 “네 이웃을 네 몸과 같이 사랑하라”는 말씀이 있었습니다. 그런데 예수님은 왜 이것을 ‘새 계명’이라고 부르셨을까요?
The Old Testament had already said, “Love your neighbor as yourself.” So why did Jesus call this a new commandment?
그 이유는, 이제 사랑의 기준이 바뀌었기 때문입니다. 내가 나를 사랑하듯이 아니라, 예수님이 우리를 사랑하신 것처럼 사랑하라는 것입니다.
Because the standard of love had changed—no longer “as you love yourself,” but “as I have loved you.”
이제 사랑의 출발점은 나 자신이 아니라, 예수님입니다.
The starting point of love is no longer myself, but Christ.
사랑의 능력은 내 안에 있지 않습니다. 우리가 누군가를 용서하고, 이해하고, 품어주는 것이 얼마나 어려운 일인지 우리는 잘 알고 있습니다.
The power to love does not come from within us. We know how hard it is to forgive, understand, and embrace someone sincerely.
때로는 가까운 교우 하나가 나를 알아주지 않아 마음이 서운하고, 아무 말 없이 감당한 수고가 인정받지 못하면 낙심이 됩니다.
Sometimes we feel disappointed when even a close fellow believer fails to notice us, and our silent service is not recognized.
문제는 내 안에 사랑할 힘이 부족하다는 것입니다. 우리의 마음은 너무 쉽게 지치고, 상처받고, 시험에 들기 때문입니다.
The truth is, we often lack the strength to love. Our hearts are easily worn out, hurt, and tempted.
그런데 예수님은 말씀하십니다. “내가 너희를 사랑한 것 같이 너희도 서로 사랑하라.”
But Jesus tells us, “As I have loved you, so you must love one another.”
이 말씀은, “나는 이미 너희에게 사랑을 부어주었고, 이제는 그 사랑을 다른 이들에게 흘려보내라”는 뜻입니다.
What He means is this: “I have already poured My love into you, and now you are to let that love flow out to others.”
사랑이 은혜로부터 시작되지 않으면 공동체는 흔들립니다.
If love does not begin from grace, the community will eventually become unstable.
만약 우리가 사랑을 하나님의 은혜에 대한 반응이 아니라, 자기 만족이나 인정받기 위한 행위로 삼는다면 어떤 일이 벌어질까요?
If we treat love not as a response to God’s grace, but as a means of self-fulfillment or recognition, what do you think will happen?
내가 열심히 헌신했는데 아무도 몰라주면 실망하게 되고, 조용히 있는 누군가는 미워 보이게 됩니다.
When we serve with zeal but receive no recognition, we become disappointed, and even begin to resent those who stay quiet.
결국, 나와 남을 비교하게 되고, 사랑이 아니라 정죄가 생깁니다.
Eventually, we start comparing ourselves with others, and judgment replaces love.
그런 마음으로 시작된 사랑은, 언젠가는 반드시 지치게 되어 있습니다. 왜냐하면 그 중심이 ‘나’이기 때문입니다.
Love that begins with such motives is bound to wear out—because its center is “me,” not Christ.
“주님께 어떻게 보답할까?”라는 마음이 사랑의 출발점입니다.
The heart that asks, “How can I respond to the Lord’s love?” is where true love begins.
진짜 사랑은 “내가 얼마나 헌신했는가”보다, “내가 얼마나 주님의 사랑을 기억하고 있는가”에서 출발합니다.
True love is not based on “how much I have sacrificed,” but “how deeply I remember the Lord’s love for me.”
그 사랑이 조건 없는 사랑이었다는 것, 그 사랑이 죄인된 나를 받아주신 사랑이었다는 것, 그 사랑이 끝까지 책임지신 사랑이었다는 것을 기억할 때, 우리는 사랑하지 않을 수가 없습니다.
When we remember that His love was unconditional, that it embraced me as a sinner, that it was a love that took responsibility to the very end—we cannot help but love.
그때 비로소 내 헌신이 나를 드러내려는 열심이 아니라, “주님께 어떻게 보답할까” 하는 감사로 바뀌게 됩니다.
Only then does our service become not a desire to be seen, but an act of thanksgiving that asks, “How can I return this grace?”
그런 사랑은 공동체 안에 감사와 격려, 겸손과 용납을 만들어냅니다.
Such love cultivates gratitude, encouragement, humility, and acceptance in the community.
십계명도 은혜 위에 주어진 계명이었습니다.
Even the Ten Commandments were given on the foundation of grace.
우리가 간혹 오해하는 것 중 하나는, 율법이 은혜와 반대되는 것이라고 여기는 것입니다.
One common misunderstanding is thinking that the law stands in opposition to grace.
하지만 하나님은 십계명을 주시기 전에 먼저 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다:
However, before giving the Ten Commandments, God said this first:
“나는 너를 애굽 땅, 종 되었던 집에서 인도하여 낸 네 하나님 여호와니라.” (출 20:2)
“I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.” (Exodus 20:2, NIV)
즉, 하나님은 이미 구원하신 자들에게, 구원받은 자답게 살아가도록 계명을 주신 것입니다.
In other words, God gave His commandments not to save people, but to teach the saved how to live.
이것이 바로 은혜 위에 세워진 계명, 은혜 위에 주어진 사랑의 길입니다.
This is what it means for the commandment to be built upon grace—a way of love given through grace.
사랑은 성령께서 우리를 통해 흘러가게 하시는 열매입니다.
Love is the fruit that the Holy Spirit causes to flow through us.
예수님은 우리를 사랑하셨고, 그 사랑을 성령님을 통해 계속 우리 마음에 기억나게 하십니다.
Jesus loved us, and through the Holy Spirit, that love continues to be made known and remembered in our hearts.
성령님은 우리가 억지로 사랑하도록 몰아가시는 분이 아니라,
The Spirit doesn’t push us to love by force,
십자가의 사랑에 감동된 사람이 기쁨으로 순종하도록 이끄시는 분입니다.
but moves those who are touched by the love of the cross to obey with joy.
그래서 새 계명은 율법이 아니라, 복음 위에 세워진 은혜의 계명입니다.
Therefore, this new commandment is not law-based, but a gospel-based commandment built upon grace.
우리는 교회 안에서 사랑을 흘려보내는 사람이어야 합니다.
We are to be people who let love flow freely within the church.
눈에 띄지 않고, 작고 사소해 보이는 사랑의 행동들이 주님께는 가장 진실한 계명 순종의 열매가 됩니다.
Small acts of love that go unnoticed by others become, in God’s eyes, the truest fruits of obedience.
어떤 집사님은 자신의 의견이 받아들여지지 않아도 서운해하지 않고, 조용히 공동체를 품습니다.
There’s a deacon who, even when their ideas are not accepted, continues to embrace the community quietly without resentment.
어떤 청년은 자신을 비판했던 사람의 사정을 듣고, 그를 위해 기도하기 시작합니다.
There’s a young person who, upon learning of the hardships faced by someone who once criticized them, starts praying for that person.
어떤 성도는 자주 늦는 이에게 불평 대신 따뜻한 인사를 건네며 그를 품어줍니다.
There’s a church member who greets someone who is often late not with complaint, but with a warm welcome and a heart of grace.
이런 사랑은 사람들 눈에는 잘 보이지 않을 수 있지만, 하나님께서 가장 귀하게 여기시는 “서로 사랑하라”는 계명의 실천입니다.
These acts of love may go unseen by people, but they are the very fulfillment of the command to “love one another” that God cherishes most.
사랑하는 성도 여러분, 청년 여러분,
Beloved brothers and sisters, dear young people,
서로 사랑하라는 이 말씀은 우리 모두에게 주어진 주님의 명령이며 사명입니다.
This call to love one another is not a suggestion—it is a command and a mission given to all of us.
이 계명은 결코 짐이 아닙니다. 오히려 기쁨이 되고, 자유가 되고, 공동체를 살리는 능력입니다.
This commandment is never a burden. In fact, it becomes our joy, our freedom, and the power that revives our community.
주님은 오늘도 우리에게 말씀하십니다, “서로 사랑하라. 내가 너희를 사랑한 것 같이.”
Even today, the Lord continues to say to us, “Love one another, as I have loved you.”
3. 지금은 미약하나 후에는 끝까지 따르는 삶 (요한복음 13:36–38)
3. Though Weak Now, We Will Follow to the End (John 13:36–38)
예수님은 제자들의 미숙함과 한계를 알고 계셨지만, 그럼에도 불구하고 그들이 결국 믿음으로 순종하게 될 미래를 바라보셨습니다.
Jesus knew the immaturity and limitations of His disciples, yet He looked ahead to the day when they would follow Him in faith and obedience.
베드로의 넘치는 열정은 결국 실패로 이어지지만, 주님은 그 실패 이후의 회복과 성숙의 여정을 바라보십니다.
Peter’s bold zeal would soon lead to failure, but Jesus already foresaw the journey of restoration and growth that would follow.
36 시몬 베드로가 이르되 주여 어디로 가시나이까 예수께서 대답하시되 내가 가는 곳에 네가 지금은 따라올 수 없으나 후에는 따라오리라
36 Simon Peter asked him, “Lord, where are you going?” Jesus replied, “Where I am going, you cannot follow now, but you will follow later.”
37 베드로가 이르되 주여 내가 지금은 어찌하여 따라갈 수 없나이까 주를 위하여 내 목숨을 버리겠나이다
37 Peter asked, “Lord, why can’t I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.”
38 예수께서 대답하시되 네가 나를 위하여 네 목숨을 버리겠느냐 내가 진실로 진실로 네게 이르노니 닭 울기 전에 네가 세 번 나를 부인하리라
38 Then Jesus answered, “Will you really lay down your life for me? Very truly I tell you, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times!” (John 13:36–38, NIV)
예수님께서 십자가를 향해 마지막 길을 걸어가시기 전, 베드로는 다급하게 묻습니다. “주님, 어디로 가시나이까?”
As Jesus was about to walk His final road to the cross, Peter anxiously asked, “Lord, where are you going?”
그때 주님은 이렇게 말씀하십니다: “지금은 나를 따라올 수 없으나, 후에는 따라오리라.”
And Jesus responded, “You cannot follow me now, but you will follow later.”
이 짧은 말씀 속에는 예수님의 깊은 사랑과 배려, 그리고 우리를 향한 신뢰와 약속이 담겨 있습니다.
This brief statement holds profound love, gentle understanding, and a deep promise of hope and trust.
지금 당장은 연약하고 미숙해도, 넘어지고 실망하게 될 것을 아시면서도, 예수님은 우리의 “후에”를 바라보십니다.
Even knowing our current weaknesses, immaturity, and inevitable failures, Jesus looks toward our “later.”
지금이 아니라, 미래의 순종 가능성에 시선을 두고 계신 분이십니다.
He is the One who focuses not on our present faults, but on the possibility of future obedience.
넘치는 열정은 실패로 이어질 수 있습니다. 그러나 주님은 그 실패 속에서도 우리를 끝까지 포기하지 않으십니다.
Zealous passion may lead to failure, but even in failure, the Lord never gives up on us.
베드로는 주님의 말씀을 듣고 곧바로 외칩니다, “주님, 내가 주를 위하여 목숨을 버리겠나이다!” (요 13:37)
Peter immediately responds, “Lord, I will lay down my life for you!” (John 13:37)
이 얼마나 뜨거운 고백입니까. 그러나 예수님은 조용히 말씀하십니다,
What a passionate confession. But Jesus gently replies,
“네가 나를 위하여 네 목숨을 버리겠느냐? 내가 진실로 네게 이르노니, 닭 울기 전에 네가 세 번 나를 부인하리라.” (요 13:38)
“Will you really lay down your life for me? Very truly I tell you, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.” (John 13:38, NIV)
예수님은 베드로의 열정도 아시고, 그의 연약함과 실패까지도 이미 알고 계셨습니다.
Jesus knew Peter’s passion, and He also knew his weakness and coming failure.
그럼에도 불구하고 주님은 말씀하십니다, “후에는 따라오리라.”
And yet the Lord still says, “You will follow later.”
주님은 우리의 지금의 실패가 끝이 아님을 아십니다. 오히려 그 실패를 통해 회복되고 성숙해질 미래를 바라보십니다.
The Lord knows that our present failure is not the end, and He sees the restoration and maturity that will come through it.
그러니 실패를 두려워하지 맙시다. 우리 함께, 작고 평범한 일부터 다시 도전해 봅시다.
So let us not fear failure. Let us take new steps again, beginning with small and ordinary things.
청년의 시절, 아니 인생의 많은 순간이 실수와 시행착오로 가득할 수 있습니다.
Youth—and many moments in life—can be filled with mistakes and trial and error.
그러나 바로 그 시간들이, 하나님 앞에서 새로운 출발이 될 수 있는 가장 귀한 기회가 됩니다.
But it is precisely those seasons that become the most precious opportunities for a new beginning with God.
우리는 완전하지 않지만, 작은 일부터 성실히 감당할 때 하나님은 그 순종을 통해 열매를 맺게 하십니다.
Though we are not perfect, when we are faithful in small things, God bears fruit through our obedience.

There are times when we aim to do great things, only to end up doing nothing.

But the Lord tells us, “Be faithful in the small task before you now.”

Jesus compared the kingdom of heaven to a mustard seed.
“천국은 겨자씨와 같으니, 모든 씨보다 작지만 자라면 큰 나무가 되어 새들이 와서 깃든다.” (마태복음 13:31–32)
“The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his field. Though it is the smallest of all seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds come and perch in its branches.” (Matthew 13:31–32, NIV)
겨자씨는 손톱보다도 작습니다. 그러나 그것이 자라려면 물이 필요하고, 햇빛이 필요하고, 무엇보다 기다림이 필요합니다.
A mustard seed is smaller than a fingernail, but for it to grow, it needs water, sunlight, and most of all—time.
우리의 믿음도 마찬가지입니다. 처음엔 작고 보잘것없어 보여도, 주님은 그것을 자라게 하십니다.
Our faith is the same. Though it may appear small and insignificant at first, the Lord makes it grow.
오늘의 작은 충성이 내일의 큰 열매로 이어지는 법입니다.
Today’s quiet faithfulness becomes tomorrow’s abundant fruit.
우리는 아나니아를 잘 압니다. 그는 사도행전 9장에 잠시 등장하는 인물이지만,
We know Ananias, a man who appears only briefly in Acts chapter 9,

but when Saul (who would later become Paul) was blinded on the road to Damascus, Ananias obeyed God’s call,
두려움을 무릅쓰고 그를 찾아가 안수했습니다.
He overcame fear and went to lay hands on him.

That single act of obedience became the turning point for Paul’s recovery and the beginning of his gospel mission.

Though he appears only briefly, that one faithful act unlocked a significant chapter in gospel history.

There was another man named Edward Kimball, an unknown Sunday school teacher.

Ananias and Edward Kimball share something clearly in common.

Their names were hidden, but their lives of faith were unmistakably revealed.
사람에게 알려지기보다, 하나님 앞에 충성되기를 택했던 이들의 순종이,
They chose to be faithful before God rather than be known by people,

and their obedience became the very channel through which gospel history moved forward.

For a faith that endures to the end, zeal alone is not enough.
넘어지고, 후회하고, 실패하는 순간도 찾아옵니다.
There will be moments of stumbling, regret, and failure.
그러나 주님은 그런 우리에게 말씀하십니다: “후에는 따라오리라.”
Yet the Lord says to people like us, “You will follow later.”
실패는 끝이 아닙니다.
Failure is not the end.
작고 감춰진 자리에서 묵묵히 충성하며,
When we remain quietly faithful in small, hidden places,
주님의 인도하심을 신뢰하며 살아갈 때,
and live trusting the Lord’s guidance,
우리는 후에, 반드시 주님을 따르게 될 것입니다.
then later—we will surely follow the Lord.
베드로는 결국 예수님을 부인했지만, 주님의 은혜 안에서 회복되고, 마침내 순교자의 길을 걸은 사람이 되었습니다.
Peter ultimately denied Jesus, but he was restored by the Lord’s grace and eventually walked the path of martyrdom.
지금은 미약했지만, 끝까지 따르는 믿음을 살아낸 제자가 되었습니다.
Though he was weak in the beginning, he became a disciple who lived out enduring faith.
그러므로 지금 우리의 믿음이 미약해 보여도 낙심하지 맙시다.
So if our faith feels small today, let us not be discouraged.
넘어짐이 있어도 괜찮습니다. 실수 속에서도, 주님은 여전히 우리를 바라보고 계십니다.
It’s okay to fall—because even in our failures, the Lord is still watching over us.
우리에게 중요한 것은 끝까지 따르려는 마음입니다.
What matters most is the heart that longs to follow to the end.

Being faithful in small things, quietly obeying in hidden places—

The Lord treasures the faith that rises again even after failure.
“지금은 따라올 수 없지만, 후에는 따라오리라.” 이 말씀은 베드로만이 아니라, 우리 모두에게 주신 주님의 약속입니다.
“You cannot follow now, but you will follow later.” These words were not just for Peter—they are the Lord’s promise to us all.
우리 함께, 지금 주어진 자리에 충성하며 끝까지 주님을 따르는 믿음의 여정을 이어갑시다.
So let us walk this journey of faith together, being faithful in the place we’ve been given and following the Lord to the end.
그 길 끝에서 주님께서 우리에게 말씀하실 것입니다: “잘하였도다, 착하고 충성된 종아.”
At the end of that path, the Lord will surely say to us, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”
사랑하는 여러분, 예수님께서 주신 새 계명은 우리 모두를 부르시는 삶의 방향입니다.
Dear friends, the new commandment Jesus gave us is a direction for all of our lives.

Even in failure and weakness, we desire to walk together as disciples who follow Him to the end.
