Live as Children of Light
에베소서 Ephesians 5:8-21
성경은 그리스도를 믿는 사람을 “빛의 자녀”라고 부릅니다.
The Bible calls those who believe in Christ “children of light.”
우리는 한때 어둠 속에 살았지만 예수 그리스도의 은혜로 빛 가운데로 불러냄을 받았습니다.
We once lived in darkness, but through the grace of Jesus Christ we have been called into the light.
그래서 사도 바울은 “너희가 전에는 어둠이더니 이제는 주 안에서 빛이라. 그러므로 빛의 자녀들처럼 행하라”고 권면합니다.
So the apostle Paul exhorts us, “You were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light.”
그렇다면 빛의 자녀로 산다는 것은 무엇을 의미할까요?
What does it mean to live as children of light?
오늘 본문은 빛의 자녀의 삶에 나타나는 세 가지 모습을 보여 줍니다.
Today’s passage shows us three marks of the life of the children of light.
1. 빛의 자녀는 선함과 의로움과 진실함의 열매를 맺습니다 (엡 5:8–9)
Children of light bear the fruit of goodness, righteousness, and truth.
사도 바울은 에베소서 5장에서 “너희가 전에는 어둠이더니 이제는 주 안에서 빛이라. 그러므로 빛의 자녀들처럼 행하라”(엡 5:8)고 말합니다.
In Ephesians 5 Paul says, “You were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light” (Ephesians 5:8).
여기서 바울은 우리가 어둠 속에 있었다고 말하지 않습니다. 그는 우리가 어둠 자체였다고 말합니다.
Here Paul does not say that we merely lived in darkness. He says that we were darkness itself.
이 표현은 하나님을 떠난 인간의 상태가 얼마나 깊은 어둠이었는지를 보여 줍니다.
This expression shows how deeply human life had fallen into darkness apart from God.
하나님을 떠난 인간의 삶을 바울은 에베소서 2장에서 설명합니다.
Paul explains life apart from God in Ephesians 2.
사람들은 세상 풍조를 따르고 공중의 권세 잡은 자의 영향을 받으며 자기 육체의 욕심을 따라 살아가는데 이것이 바로 어둠에 속한 삶입니다.
People follow the ways of the world, live under the influence of the ruler of the power of the air, and walk according to the desires of the flesh, and this is the life that belongs to darkness.
로마서 1장은 그 어둠의 삶이 얼마나 비참한지 더 구체적으로 보여 줍니다.
Romans 1 describes even more clearly how miserable that life becomes.
사람이 하나님을 마음에 두기 싫어할 때 생각이 어두워지고 마음이 허망해집니다.
When people refuse to keep God in their hearts, their thinking becomes darkened and their hearts become futile.
개인에 대해서는 탐욕과 시기와 교만에 사로잡혀 삶이 점점 죄의 방향으로 기울어집니다.
In relation to the self, life gradually bends toward sin, becoming captive to greed, envy, and pride.
가정에 대해서는 부모를 거역하고 사랑과 책임을 잃어버립니다.
In relation to the family, people disobey their parents and lose love and responsibility.
이웃에 대해서는 다투고 속이며 수군거리고 헐뜯으면서 다른 사람을 무너뜨립니다.
In relation to neighbors, people quarrel, deceive, gossip, and slander, tearing others down.
하나님께 대해서는 하나님을 영화롭게도 감사하지도 않으며 마침내 하나님을 마음에 두기 싫어하는 자리까지 나아갑니다.
In relation to God, people neither glorify nor thank Him, and finally reach the point of not wanting to retain Him in their hearts.
마침내 성경은 사람들이 이런 일을 행할 뿐 아니라 그런 일을 행하는 사람들을 옳다고 여기게 되는데 이것이 바로 하나님을 떠난 삶의 어둠입니다.
Finally Scripture says that people not only do such things but also approve of those who practice them, and this is the darkness of a life apart from God.
그러나 바울은 오늘 본문에서 “너희가 전에는 어둠이더니 이제는 주 안에서 빛이라”고 놀랍게 선언합니다.
But in today’s passage Paul makes the remarkable declaration that “you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord.”
이 말씀은 단순한 도덕적인 변화가 아니라 하나님의 은혜로 시작된 새 창조의 선언입니다.
This is not merely a moral improvement, but the declaration of a new creation begun by God’s grace.
말씀이 육신이 되어 오신 예수 그리스도의 삶이 어둠 속에 있는 인간에게 비추어지고 그 빛이 사람의 마음에 들어올 때 새로운 삶이 시작됩니다.
The life of Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh, shines into human darkness, and when that light enters a person’s heart, a new life begins.
그래서 바울은 “빛의 열매는 모든 착함과 의로움과 진실함에 있느니라”(엡 5:9)고 말합니다.
So Paul says, “the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness, and truth” (Ephesians 5:9).
여기서 중요한 것은 열매는 억지로 만드는 것이 아니라는 점입니다.
The important point here is that fruit is not something we force.
예수님께서도 요한복음 15장에서 “나는 포도나무요 너희는 가지라”고 말씀하셨고 가지가 포도나무에 붙어 있으면 열매를 맺지만 떨어져 있으면 아무 열매도 맺지 못합니다.
Jesus also said in John 15, “I am the vine; you are the branches,” and a branch bears fruit when it remains in the vine, but if it is separated it can bear nothing.
빛의 자녀의 삶도 이와 같아서 우리가 주님의 은혜 안에 머물 때 삶에 변화가 나타납니다.
The life of the children of light is the same, for when we remain in the grace of the Lord, change appears in our lives.
빛의 자녀는 선함과 의로움과 진실함의 열매를 맺습니다.
Children of light bear the fruit of goodness, righteousness, and truth.
먼저 선함은 삶의 목적을 말합니다.
First, goodness speaks of the purpose of life.
어둠 속에 있을 때 사람은 자기 유익을 먼저 생각하며 내가 더 얻는가, 내가 더 편한가, 내가 손해 보지 않는가를 먼저 따집니다.
When people are in darkness, they think first of their own benefit, asking whether they gain more, whether they are more comfortable, and whether they can avoid loss.
그러나 빛의 자녀는 삶의 방향이 달라집니다.
But children of light are changed in the direction of life.
이제는 “어떻게 하면 내가 더 가질까”보다 “어떻게 하면 다른 사람을 살릴까”를 먼저 생각하고, 사람을 이용하려는 마음보다 사람을 세우려는 마음이 자라기 시작합니다.
Now they ask not first, “How can I gain more?” but, “How can I give life to others?” and the desire to use people is replaced by a growing desire to build them up.
전에는 손해 보기 싫어서 움켜쥐었다면 이제는 나누고 베풀 줄 알게 되며, 자기 중심으로 움직이던 삶이 선한 방향으로 움직이게 됩니다.
If before they held tightly out of fear of loss, now they learn to share and give, and a life that once moved in a self-centered way begins to move in a good direction.
그래서 선함은 삶의 목적이 바뀌는 것이며 자기 자신만을 위해 살던 사람이 다른 사람을 살리는 사람으로 바뀌는 것입니다.
So goodness means that the purpose of life changes, and a person who once lived only for self becomes one who gives life to others.
다음으로 의로움은 삶의 방법을 말합니다.
Next, righteousness speaks of the way we live.
어둠 속에 있을 때 사람은 목적만 이루면 수단은 크게 중요하지 않다고 생각하기 쉽습니다.
When people are in darkness, they easily think that if the goal is reached, the means do not matter much.
조금 속여도 괜찮고, 조금 비뚤어져도 괜찮고, 결국 내가 원하는 결과만 얻으면 된다고 여깁니다.
They think it is acceptable to deceive a little, to twist things a little, as long as they get the result they want.
그러나 빛의 자녀는 하나님 앞에서 바른 길을 묻기 시작하며 이 길이 옳은 길인지 하나님 앞에서 정직한지 먼저 생각합니다.
But children of light begin to ask what is right before God and first consider whether this path is right and whether they are honest before Him.
비록 손해를 보더라도 바른 길이라면 그 길을 택하려고 합니다.
Even if it brings loss, if it is the right path, they seek to choose it.
전에는 자기 유익을 위해 다른 사람을 속였지만 이제는 정직으로 서려고 합니다.
Before, they may have deceived others for personal gain, but now they seek to stand in honesty.
전에는 자기 뜻을 이루기 위해 무리하게 밀어붙였지만 이제는 하나님이 기뻐하시는 바른 방법을 찾으려 합니다.
Before, they may have forced things through to accomplish their own will, but now they seek the right way that pleases God.
그래서 의로움은 단순히 법적으로 틀리지 않는 정도가 아니라 삶의 방법이 바뀌는 것입니다.
So righteousness is not merely about avoiding technical wrongdoing but about a change in the way of life.
이기적인 자신의 방식에서 하나님의 방식으로 삶의 방법이 바뀌는 것입니다.
It means that the way of life changes from a selfish way to God’s way.
마지막으로 진실함은 마음의 태도와 동기를 말합니다.
Finally, truth speaks of the attitude and motive of the heart.
어둠 속에 있을 때 사람은 숨기고 꾸미며 겉으로는 괜찮아 보이고 싶어 하고 사람들 앞에서 좋은 평가를 받고 싶어 합니다.
When people are in darkness, they try to hide and pretend, wanting to look fine outwardly and to gain a good reputation before others.
잘못이 있어도 감추고, 부끄러운 부분은 포장하고, 속은 비어 있어도 겉만 그럴듯하면 된다고 여기기 쉽습니다.
Even when they are wrong, they hide it, cover up what is shameful, and easily think it is enough if the outside looks respectable while the inside is empty.
그러나 빛의 자녀는 하나님 앞에서 중심이 바르게 되기를 원합니다.
But children of light desire for the center of their hearts to be right before God.
사람 앞에서 좋아 보이는 것보다 하나님 앞에서 정직한 것을 더 귀하게 여깁니다.
They value honesty before God more than appearing impressive before people.
드러나지 않던 마음의 동기까지도 주님 앞에 비추어지기를 원합니다.
They even want the hidden motives of the heart to be brought into the light before the Lord.
그래서 진실함은 단순히 거짓말을 하지 않는 것이 아니라 마음의 동기가 바뀌는 것입니다.
So truth is not merely the absence of lying but a change in the motives of the heart.
사람의 시선을 의식하며 살던 사람이 하나님 앞에서 참되게 서기를 원하는 사람으로 바뀌는 것입니다.
It means that a person who once lived under the gaze of others becomes one who desires to stand truthfully before God.
그러므로 선함과 의로움과 진실함은 각각 따로 떨어진 말이 아닙니다.
Therefore goodness, righteousness, and truth are not isolated ideas.
선함은 삶의 목적을, 의로움은 삶의 방법을, 진실함은 삶의 중심과 동기를 보여 줍니다.
Goodness shows the purpose of life, righteousness the way of life, and truth the center and motive of life.
곧 빛의 자녀는 무엇을 위해 사는지, 어떻게 사는지, 어떤 마음으로 사는지가 달라지는 사람입니다.
In other words, children of light are people whose purpose, method, and inner motive of life are all changed.
이 변화는 억지로 만들어지는 것이 아니라 주님의 빛이 우리 안에 비추어질 때 시작됩니다.
This transformation is not forced but begins when the light of the Lord shines within us.
세리 삭개오는 예수님을 만나기 전에는 돈을 위해 살던 사람이었습니다.
Before meeting Jesus, Zacchaeus lived for money.
그의 삶의 목적은 자기 유익이었고 삶의 방법은 정직하지 못했으며 마음의 중심도 하나님 앞에 바로 서 있지 못했습니다.
The purpose of his life was his own gain, the way he lived was not honest, and the center of his heart was not right before God.
그러나 예수님이 그의 집에 들어가셨을 때 그의 삶이 바뀌기 시작했습니다.
But when Jesus entered his house, his life began to change.
그는 “내 소유의 절반을 가난한 사람에게 주겠습니다”라고 말했는데 이것은 삶의 목적이 바뀌었다는 뜻입니다.
He said, “Half of my possessions I give to the poor,” and this means that the purpose of his life had changed.
그는 또 “누구에게서 토색한 일이 있으면 네 배로 갚겠습니다”라고 고백했는데 이것은 삶의 방법이 바뀌었다는 뜻입니다.
He also confessed, “If I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount,” and this means that the way he lived had changed.
그리고 그는 예수님 앞에서 자기 삶을 숨기지 않고 드러냈는데 이것은 마음의 중심과 동기가 바뀌었다는 뜻입니다.
And he no longer hid his life before Jesus but brought it into the open, and this means that the center and motive of his heart had changed.
어둠 속에 있던 삶이 빛을 만나자 열매가 나타난 것입니다.
When a life in darkness met the light, fruit appeared.
이것이 바로 빛의 자녀의 삶이며 주님의 빛이 비출 때 삶의 목적과 방법과 중심이 바뀌고 선함과 의로움과 진실함의 열매가 맺히기 시작합니다.
This is the life of the children of light, for when the Lord’s light shines the purpose, way, and center of life change, and the fruit of goodness, righteousness, and truth begins to grow.
2. 빛의 자녀는 무엇이 주를 기쁘시게 하는지 분별합니다 (엡 5:10–14)
Children of light discern what pleases the Lord.
사도 바울은 “주를 기쁘시게 할 것이 무엇인가 시험하여 보라”(엡 5:10)고 권면합니다.
The apostle Paul exhorts us to “find out what pleases the Lord” (Ephesians 5:10).
빛의 자녀의 삶은 단순히 착하게 보이는 삶이 아니라 무엇이 주님을 기쁘시게 하는지 묻고 그것을 분별하며 살아가는 삶입니다.
The life of a child of light is not merely about appearing good, but about asking what pleases the Lord and living with discernment.
여기서 “시험하여 보라”는 말은 계속 살피고 분별하고 확인하며 선택하라는 뜻입니다.
Here, “find out” means to keep examining, discerning, confirming, and choosing.
어둠에 속한 삶은 보통 자기 욕심을 기준으로 움직입니다.
A life that belongs to darkness usually moves according to personal desires.
어둠의 삶은 내가 원하는가, 사람들이 인정해 주는가, 손해 보지 않는가를 먼저 생각합니다.
A life in darkness first asks whether I want it, whether it will earn people’s approval, and whether it will cost me anything.
그러나 빛의 자녀는 기준이 다릅니다.
But the standard of the children of light is different.
이것이 주님을 기쁘시게 하는가를 먼저 묻습니다.
They first ask whether this pleases the Lord.
그래서 바울은 “너희는 열매 없는 어둠의 일에 참여하지 말고 도리어 책망하라”(엡 5:11)고 말합니다.
So Paul says, “Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them” (Ephesians 5:11).
여기서 바울은 어둠의 일을 열매 없는 일이라고 부릅니다.
Here Paul calls the deeds of darkness fruitless deeds.
겉으로는 화려해 보이고 당장은 유익해 보이며 잠시 즐거워 보일 수도 있습니다.
They may look impressive on the outside, seem beneficial for the moment, and even appear pleasurable for a time.
하나님 나라에 아무 열매도 남기지 못하고 사람을 살리지도 못하며 자신도 참되게 세우지 못합니다.
They leave no fruit that remains in the kingdom of God, give no life to others, and do not truly build up the self.
그래서 빛의 자녀는 세상이 박수치는 길이라고 해서 그대로 따라가지 않습니다.
Therefore children of light do not follow a path simply because the world applauds it.
주님이 기뻐하시지 않는다면 멈추고 주님이 기뻐하신다면 기꺼이 그 길을 선택하려 합니다.
If the Lord is not pleased, they stop, and if the Lord is pleased, they willingly choose that path.
이것은 율법적인 긴장 속에서 사는 삶이 아니라 은혜를 받은 사람이 드리는 사랑의 응답입니다.
This is not a life lived under legalistic tension, but the loving response of someone who has received grace.
주님께 큰 은혜를 입은 사람은 이렇게 고백하게 됩니다.
A person who has received great grace from the Lord begins to confess like this.
주님 저를 어둠에서 빛으로 불러 주시고 살려 주셨으니 이제 제 삶이 주님을 기쁘시게 하기를 원합니다.
Lord, You have called me from darkness into light and given me life, so now I desire that my life may please You.
바울은 이어서 “숨은 일들은 말하기도 부끄러운 것이라”(엡 5:12)고 말합니다.
Paul then says that “it is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret” (Ephesians 5:12).
어둠의 삶은 겉으로는 괜찮아 보일 수 있지만 안에서는 죄가 자라나는 숨겨진 삶입니다.
A life of darkness is a hidden life that may appear acceptable outwardly, but inside sin continues to grow.
빛이 비추어지지 않으면 사람은 자기 모습을 제대로 보지 못합니다.
Without light people cannot see themselves clearly.
그래서 바울은 “책망을 받는 모든 것은 빛으로 말미암아 드러나나니”(엡 5:13)라고 말합니다.
So Paul says, “everything exposed by the light becomes visible” (Ephesians 5:13).
빛이 비추어질 때 사람은 비로소 자기 모습을 보게 됩니다.
When the light shines, people finally see themselves.
빛은 사람을 정죄하기 위해서가 아니라 깨우기 위해 비추어집니다.
Light shines not to condemn people but to awaken them.
그래서 바울은 “잠자는 자여 깨어서 죽은 자들 가운데서 일어나라 그리스도께서 너에게 비추시리라”(엡 5:14)라고 권면합니다.
So Paul exhorts us, “Wake up, sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you” (Ephesians 5:14).
사람은 영적으로 잠들어 있을 때가 많아 생각 없이 반복되는 삶을 살고 바쁘게 살며 세상의 흐름을 따라 살아갑니다.
People are often spiritually asleep, living a life of thoughtless repetition, staying busy, and moving along with the flow of the world.
그러면서도 무엇이 주님을 기쁘시게 하는지 묻지 않은 채 살아갈 때가 많습니다.
Yet they often live without asking what truly pleases the Lord.
어쩌면 하루 종일 열심히 살았을 수 있습니다.
Perhaps someone has worked hard all day.
그러나 마지막에 돌아보면 오늘 내가 정말 주님을 기쁘시게 하며 살았는가 하는 질문을 한 번도 하지 않았을 수도 있습니다.
But when the day ends, they may realize they never asked whether they truly lived that day in a way that pleased the Lord.
우리는 휴대전화 배터리가 조금만 떨어져도 충전기를 찾지만 영혼이 지쳐 갈 때는 그것을 깨닫지 못한 채 오래 버티고 있을 때가 많습니다.
We look for a charger as soon as our phone battery drops, but when our souls grow weary, we often keep going for a long time without even realizing it.
그래서 그리스도의 빛이 우리에게 비추어져야 합니다.
That is why the light of Christ must shine upon us.
그 빛이 비추어질 때 우리는 깨어나고 내 생각과 욕심만 따라 살던 자리에서 돌아서게 됩니다.
When that light shines, we awaken and turn from the place where we lived only by our own thoughts and desires.
베드로가 바로 그런 경험을 했습니다.
Peter had that very experience.
그는 예수님을 세 번 부인했지만 닭이 울고 예수님의 말씀이 떠올랐을 때 비로소 자기 모습을 보게 되었습니다.
He denied Jesus three times, but when the rooster crowed and Jesus’ words came back to him, he finally saw himself clearly.
성경은 그가 밖에 나가 심히 통곡했다고 기록하는데 그 통곡은 절망의 통곡만이 아니라 다시 주님께로 돌아가는 깨어남의 통곡이었습니다.
Scripture records that he went outside and wept bitterly, and that weeping was not only the weeping of despair but the weeping of awakening that led him back to the Lord.
그래서 빛의 자녀는 먼저 지금 내 마음의 동기가 주님을 기쁘시게 하는가를 묻게 됩니다.
So children of light first ask whether the motives of their hearts please the Lord.
그리고 내가 하는 말과 선택하는 행동이 주님을 기쁘시게 하는가를 살피게 됩니다.
And they examine whether the words they speak and the actions they choose please the Lord.
이 질문은 우리를 묶기 위한 질문이 아니라 은혜를 받은 사람이 드리는 사랑의 질문입니다.
These questions are not meant to bind us, but are the loving questions of a person who has received grace.
그러므로 사랑하는 성도 여러분, 우리 모두 이 기도를 마음에 품고 주님 앞에 함께 고백하기를 원합니다.
So, dear brothers and sisters, let us hold this prayer in our hearts and confess it together before the Lord.
“주님, 저를 사랑하신 은혜를 헛되이 받지 않게 하소서.
“Lord, do not let me receive Your grace in vain.
주님, 저를 기쁘게 하는 삶보다 주님을 기쁘시게 하는 삶을 살게 하소서.
Lord, let me live not for what pleases me most, but for what pleases You.
주님, 오늘도 제 삶이 주님의 마음에 기쁨이 되게 하소서.”
Lord, let my life today be a joy to Your heart.”
이처럼 주님을 기쁘시게 하기를 구하며 살아가는 삶이 바로 빛의 자녀의 두 번째 모습입니다.
This kind of life—seeking each day to please the Lord—is the second mark of the children of light.
3. 빛의 자녀는 성령으로 충만한 삶을 살아갑니다 (엡 5:18–21)
Children of light live a life filled with the Spirit.
사도 바울은 “술 취하지 말라 이는 방탕한 것이니 오직 성령으로 충만함을 받으라”(엡 5:18)고 권면합니다.
The apostle Paul exhorts, “Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit” (Ephesians 5:18).
바울은 여기서 두 가지 삶을 대조합니다. 하나는 술에 취한 삶이고 다른 하나는 성령으로 충만한 삶입니다.
Here Paul contrasts two ways of living. One is a life controlled by wine, and the other is a life filled with the Spirit.
술에 취한 사람은 중심을 잃고 생각이 흐려지며 말과 행동이 흔들립니다. 결국 자신도 모르는 사이에 삶의 방향이 흐트러지게 됩니다.
A person who is drunk loses self-control. The mind becomes unclear and speech and actions become unstable, and the direction of life gradually becomes disordered.
그래서 바울은 술 취함을 방탕이라고 말합니다. 삶의 중심이 무너지는 상태이기 때문입니다.
That is why Paul calls drunkenness debauchery, because it is a condition in which the center of life collapses.
그러나 성령으로 충만한 삶은 정반대입니다. 삶의 중심이 하나님께 붙들리고 생각과 말과 삶의 방향이 하나님을 향하게 됩니다.
But a life filled with the Spirit is the opposite. The center of life is held by God, and our thoughts, words, and the direction of our lives turn toward Him.
그래서 바울은 성령으로 충만한 삶의 모습을 이어서 설명합니다.
So Paul continues by describing what a Spirit-filled life looks like.
바울은 “시와 찬송과 신령한 노래들로 서로 화답하며 너희의 마음으로 주께 노래하며 찬송하라”(엡 5:19)고 말합니다.
Paul says, “Speak to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord” (Ephesians 5:19).
성령으로 충만한 사람의 입에서는 원망보다 찬송이 나옵니다. 불평보다 감사가 나오고 절망의 말보다 소망의 말이 나오기 시작합니다.
From the mouth of a Spirit-filled person comes praise rather than complaint, gratitude rather than grumbling, and words of hope rather than despair.
또 바울은 마음으로 주께 노래하라고 말합니다. 이것은 성령으로 충만한 삶이 겉으로만 종교적인 모습이 아니라 마음 깊은 곳에서 하나님을 향하는 삶이라는 뜻입니다.
Paul also says to sing to the Lord from the heart. This means that a Spirit-filled life is not merely outward religion but a life that turns toward God from deep within.
그리고 바울은 “범사에 우리 주 예수 그리스도의 이름으로 항상 아버지 하나님께 감사하라”(엡 5:20)고 말합니다.
Paul also says, “Always give thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ” (Ephesians 5:20).
성령으로 충만한 삶은 형편이 좋을 때만 감사하는 삶이 아닙니다. 하나님이 함께하신다는 사실 때문에 어떤 상황에서도 감사하는 삶입니다.
A Spirit-filled life does not give thanks only when circumstances are good. It gives thanks in every situation because God is with us.
바울은 마지막으로 “그리스도를 경외함으로 피차 복종하라”(엡 5:21)고 말합니다.
Finally Paul says, “Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ” (Ephesians 5:21).

Their feet were fastened in stocks and their bodies were wounded from severe beating.
상황만 보면 원망할 이유가 충분했습니다.
From a human perspective, they had every reason to complain.

But Scripture records that about midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them (Acts 16:25).

In that place filled with praise, God accomplished a work of salvation, and the jailer and his whole household heard the gospel and turned to God.
