아버지를 영화롭게 하는 영생
John 요한복음 17:1–11
Youth is a season filled with many possibilities.
청년의 시기는 많은 가능성이 있는 시간입니다.
But at the same time, it is also a season filled with many questions and anxieties.
그러나 동시에 많은 질문과 불안이 찾아오는 시간이기도 합니다.
“What should I live for?” “Where is my life heading?” “Am I truly valuable?”
“나는 무엇을 위해 살아야 하는가?” “내 삶은 어디로 가고 있는가?” “나는 정말 가치 있는 존재인가?”
Today, in John 17, Jesus shows us what eternal life truly is.
오늘 예수님은 요한복음 17장에서 영생이 무엇인지 보여 주십니다.
Eternal life is not merely a life we receive after death, but a life lived in relationship with God even now.
영생은 단순히 죽은 뒤에 얻는 생명이 아니라, 지금 하나님과의 관계 안에서 살아가는 생명입니다.
Through today’s message, let us look together at what the life of eternal life truly means.
오늘 말씀을 통해 영생의 삶이 무엇인지 함께 살펴보겠습니다.
1.Eternal life is a life that reveals the glory of the Father. (1–5)
영생은 아버지의 영광을 드러내는 삶입니다.
As Jesus faced the cross, He looked up toward heaven and prayed.
예수님은 십자가를 앞두고 하늘을 우러러 기도하셨습니다.
Surprisingly, the first words of His prayer were not about His fear or suffering.
그 기도의 첫마디는 놀랍게도 자신의 두려움이나 고난에 대한 이야기가 아니었습니다.
“Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you.” (1)
“아버지여 때가 이르렀사오니 아들을 영화롭게 하사 아들로 아버지를 영화롭게 하게 하옵소서.” (1절)
The meaning of this prayer is that even in His final moments, Jesus desired the glory of the Father above all else.
이 기도의 의미는 예수님이 마지막 순간까지 아버지의 영광을 바라보셨다는 것입니다.
Here, “to glorify” does not simply mean to become famous. It means to reveal God’s love, character, and will.
여기서 “영화롭게 하다”는 것은 단순히 유명하게 만든다는 뜻이 아닙니다. 하나님의 사랑과 성품과 뜻을 드러낸다는 의미입니다.
Through the cross, Jesus revealed what kind of God He is.
예수님은 십자가를 통해 하나님이 어떤 분이신지를 보여 주셨습니다.
The world says that the strong are the ones who win, but Jesus revealed God through sacrifice and love.
세상은 힘이 강한 사람이 이긴다고 말하지만, 예수님은 희생과 사랑으로 하나님을 드러내셨습니다.
The world says that glory comes from rising higher, but Jesus revealed the Father’s glory by lowering Himself.
세상은 높아져야 영광이라고 말하지만, 예수님은 낮아지심으로 아버지의 영광을 나타내셨습니다.
Young people constantly desire recognition as they live their lives.
청년들은 살아가면서 끊임없이 인정받고 싶어 합니다.
They try to prove their worth through good schools, good jobs, impressive achievements, many followers, and people’s praise.
좋은 학교, 좋은 직장, 좋은 스펙, 많은 팔로워, 사람들의 칭찬을 통해 자신의 가치를 증명하려고 합니다.
But living that way easily exhausts the heart, because human recognition never lasts long.
그러나 그렇게 살아가다 보면 마음이 쉽게 지칩니다. 왜냐하면 사람의 인정은 오래가지 않기 때문입니다.
There is always someone who performs better, succeeds more, or receives more attention than we do.
누군가는 나보다 더 잘하고, 더 성공하고, 더 주목받습니다.
So many young people may appear fine on the outside, while inwardly living with comparison and anxiety.
그래서 많은 청년들이 겉으로는 괜찮아 보여도 속으로는 비교와 불안 속에서 살아갑니다.
But Jesus shows us a different way.
그런데 예수님은 다른 길을 보여 주십니다.
True glory is not found in being recognized by people, but in revealing God through our lives.
진짜 영광은 사람들에게 인정받는 데 있는 것이 아니라 하나님을 드러내는 삶에 있다는 것입니다.
When God’s love is revealed through our lives, when the character of Jesus appears in our words and actions, when we embrace the wounded, live honestly, and return to God even after falling—
내 삶을 통해 하나님의 사랑이 드러나고, 내 말과 행동 속에서 예수님의 성품이 나타나고, 상처 입은 사람을 품고, 정직하게 살아가고, 넘어져도 다시 하나님께 돌아옵니다.
That is the life that glorifies God.
그 삶이 하나님을 영화롭게 하는 삶입니다.
In verse 2, Jesus says that the Father has given Him “authority over all people.”
2절에서 예수님은 아버지께서 자신에게 “만민을 다스리는 권세”를 주셨다고 말씀하십니다.
This authority is not power used to oppress people. Rather, it is authority given to give them eternal life.
이 권세는 사람들을 억누르는 권력이 아닙니다. 오히려 그들에게 영생을 주기 위한 권세입니다.
The power of the world seeks to control people, but the authority of Jesus is used to give people life.
세상의 권력은 사람을 지배하려고 하지만, 예수님의 권세는 사람을 살리기 위해 사용됩니다.
That is why Jesus restored the wounded, raised up sinners instead of condemning them, and did not turn away from the sick and the weak.
그래서 예수님은 상처 입은 사람을 회복시키셨고, 죄인들을 정죄하기보다 다시 일으키셨고, 병든 자와 약한 자를 외면하지 않으셨습니다.
There are also many unseen wounds in the hearts of young people.
청년들의 마음속에도 보이지 않는 상처가 많습니다.
“Why am I only this much?” “Will my future be okay?” “Does God really love me?” “Have I failed?”
“나는 왜 이것밖에 안 될까?” “내 미래는 괜찮을까?” “하나님은 정말 나를 사랑하실까?” “나는 실패한 것 아닐까?”
There are times when these questions cause our hearts to collapse.
이런 질문들이 마음을 무너뜨릴 때가 있습니다.
But Jesus is not the One who has authority in order to condemn us. He is the One who came to give us eternal life.
그러나 예수님은 우리를 정죄하기 위해 권세를 가지신 분이 아닙니다. 우리에게 영생을 주시기 위해 오신 분입니다.
He is the One who enables us to live again, stand again, and discover the value of our existence in God.
다시 살게 하시고, 다시 일어서게 하시고, 하나님 안에서 자기 존재의 가치를 발견하게 하시는 분입니다.
And in verse 4, Jesus says, “I have brought you glory on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do.”
그리고 4절에서 예수님은 이렇게 말씀하십니다. “아버지께서 내게 하라고 주신 일을 내가 이루어 아버지를 이 세상에서 영화롭게 하였사오니”
Jesus walked the path the Father had entrusted to Him until the very end.
예수님은 끝까지 하나님이 맡기신 길을 걸어가셨습니다.
Even when there was suffering, misunderstanding, and betrayal, He did not give up the will of the Father.
고난이 있어도, 오해가 있어도, 배신이 있어도, 아버지의 뜻을 포기하지 않으셨습니다.
Youth is a season with many uncertainties.
청년의 시기는 흔들림이 많은 시기입니다.
Career paths can feel uncertain, relationships can feel uncertain, and even faith can feel uncertain.
진로도 흔들리고, 관계도 흔들리고, 믿음도 흔들릴 수 있습니다.
But what matters is not becoming a perfect person.
그러나 중요한 것은 완벽한 사람이 되는 것이 아닙니다.
What matters is the direction of trying to reveal God in the place of life He has entrusted to us.
하나님이 맡기신 삶의 자리에서 하나님을 드러내며 살아가려는 방향입니다.
It is a life that holds on to the question, “How can I reveal God?” in our studies, workplaces, homes, and church.
공부하는 자리에서도, 직장에서도, 가정에서도, 교회에서도, “어떻게 하면 하나님을 드러낼 수 있을까?”를 붙드는 삶입니다.
That is the life of eternal life.
그것이 영생의 삶입니다.
In verse 5, Jesus speaks of the glory He shared with the Father before the creation of the world.
5절에서 예수님은 창세 전부터 아버지와 함께 누리셨던 영광을 말씀하십니다.
This shows that Jesus is not merely a human teacher, but the One who was with God.
이 말씀은 예수님이 단순한 인간 선생이 아니라 하나님과 함께 계셨던 분이라는 것을 보여 줍니다.
The Lord of glory humbled Himself for us, bore the cross, and gave us eternal life.
그 영광의 주님께서 우리를 위해 낮아지셨고, 십자가를 지셨고, 우리에게 영생을 주셨습니다.
Therefore, we must not exhaust our hearts by chasing only human recognition.
그러므로 우리는 사람의 인정만 따라가다가 마음이 지치지 않아야 하겠습니다.
God does not see us only by our scores and qualifications.
하나님은 우리를 점수와 스펙으로만 보지 않으십니다.
God wants us to live as His children.
하나님은 우리가 하나님의 자녀로 살아가기를 원하십니다.
And He wants His love, truthfulness, and holiness to be revealed through our lives.
그리고 우리의 삶 속에서 하나님의 사랑과 진실함과 거룩함이 드러나기를 원하십니다.
That is the life of eternal life that glorifies the Father.
그것이 아버지를 영화롭게 하는 영생의 삶입니다.
2.Eternal life is a life of deeply knowing the true God and Jesus Christ. (2–3)
영생은 참 하나님과 예수 그리스도를 깊이 알아가는 삶입니다.
In verse 3, Jesus clearly explains what eternal life is. “Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.”
예수님은 3절에서 영생이 무엇인지 아주 분명하게 말씀하십니다. “영생은 곧 유일하신 참 하나님과 그가 보내신 자 예수 그리스도를 아는 것이니이다.”
Many people think of eternal life only as going to heaven after death.
많은 사람들은 영생을 죽은 뒤 천국에 가는 것으로만 생각합니다.
Of course, eternal life includes the hope beyond death. But Jesus did not speak of eternal life only as something in the future.
물론 영생에는 죽음 이후의 소망도 포함되어 있습니다. 그러나 예수님은 영생을 미래의 일만으로 말씀하지 않으셨습니다.
Eternal life is a life lived in relationship with God even now.
영생은 지금 하나님과의 관계 안에서 살아가는 삶입니다.
In verse 3, the word “know” does not simply refer to knowledge. In the Bible, “to know” means to live in relationship and experience together.
3절에서 “안다”는 것은 단순히 지식을 뜻하지 않습니다. 성경에서 “안다”는 것은 관계를 맺고 경험하며 살아가는 것을 의미합니다.
For example, knowing someone’s name and occupation is completely different from spending time with that person and sharing hearts together.
예를 들어 어떤 사람의 이름과 직업을 아는 것과, 그 사람과 함께 시간을 보내며 마음을 나누는 것은 전혀 다릅니다.
Jesus was not speaking about simply knowing a lot of information about God. He was speaking about entering into a living relationship with God.
예수님은 단순히 하나님에 대한 정보를 많이 아는 것을 말씀하지 않으셨습니다. 하나님과 살아 있는 관계 안으로 들어가는 것을 말씀하셨습니다.
Young people live surrounded by endless information.
청년들은 많은 정보를 접하며 살아갑니다.
The internet is overflowing with knowledge, videos, and opinions. But having more information does not necessarily make the heart healthy.
인터넷에는 수많은 지식과 영상과 의견들이 넘쳐납니다. 그러나 정보가 많다고 마음이 건강해지는 것은 아닙니다.
Rather, many young people become lost in the flood of information and struggle without even knowing who they truly are.
오히려 너무 많은 정보 속에서 길을 잃고, 자신이 누구인지 모른 채 흔들리는 청년들도 많습니다.
That is because human beings are not creatures who live by information alone.
왜냐하면 사람은 단순히 정보만으로 사는 존재가 아니기 때문입니다.
Human beings live through relationships.
사람은 관계 속에서 살아갑니다.
When we are loved, understood, and connected to someone, our hearts come alive.
누군가에게 사랑받고, 누군가에게 이해받고, 누군가와 연결되어 있을 때 마음이 살아납니다.
That is why God does not simply want to give us religious knowledge, but wants us to meet God Himself through Jesus Christ.
그래서 하나님은 우리에게 단순히 종교 지식을 주시려는 것이 아니라, 예수 그리스도를 통해 하나님 자신을 만나게 하십니다.
Jesus is the One who reveals the invisible God to us.
예수님은 보이지 않는 하나님을 보여 주시는 분입니다.
Through the love of Jesus, we see the heart of God. Through the forgiveness of Jesus, we see the grace of God. Through the cross of Jesus, we see how deeply God loves us.
예수님의 사랑 속에서 하나님의 마음을 보게 되고, 예수님의 용서 속에서 하나님의 은혜를 보게 되고, 예수님의 십자가 속에서 하나님이 우리를 얼마나 사랑하시는지를 보게 됩니다.
Therefore, eternal life is a life lived together with Jesus.
그래서 영생은 예수님과 함께 살아가는 삶입니다.
It is a life of praying when we are weary, learning the heart of God through His Word, returning to God when we sin, and relying on Him when we are afraid. That is the life of eternal life.
힘들 때 기도하고, 말씀 속에서 하나님의 마음을 배우고, 죄를 지었을 때 다시 하나님께 돌아가고, 두려울 때 하나님을 의지하는 삶입니다. 그 삶이 영생의 삶입니다.
Many young people may smile outwardly, yet inwardly feel lonely.
많은 청년들이 겉으로는 웃고 있지만 속으로는 외로움을 느낍니다.
They are connected through social media, yet their hearts remain isolated.
SNS로는 연결되어 있는데 정작 마음은 고립되어 있습니다.
Some grow weary from fear of failure. Some can no longer trust people because of wounds in relationships. Others live believing they are worthless.
누군가는 실패에 대한 두려움 때문에 지치고, 누군가는 관계의 상처 때문에 사람을 믿지 못하고, 누군가는 “나는 가치 없는 사람 같다”는 생각 속에서 살아갑니다.
But Jesus speaks to us and says, “You are not alone.” “I know you.” “I carried the cross for you.” “I call you My child.”
그런데 예수님은 우리를 향해 말씀하십니다. “너는 혼자가 아니다.” “나는 너를 안다.” “나는 너를 위해 십자가를 졌다.” “나는 너를 하나님의 자녀로 부른다.”
True eternal life begins here and now.
참된 영생은 여기서 시작됩니다.
If we live holding only to the success the world offers, our hearts will easily collapse. Because it is possible to have success without love.
세상이 주는 성공만 붙들고 살면 마음이 쉽게 무너집니다. 왜냐하면 성공은 있어도 사랑이 없을 수 있기 때문입니다.
But the person who knows God and abides in Jesus can rise again even after being shaken. Because the root of their identity is in God.
그러나 하나님을 알고 예수님 안에 거하는 사람은 흔들려도 다시 일어설 수 있습니다. 왜냐하면 자기 존재의 뿌리가 하나님 안에 있기 때문입니다.
In verse 2, Jesus says that He gives eternal life to those whom the Father has given Him.
2절에서 예수님은 아버지께서 자신에게 주신 사람들에게 영생을 주신다고 말씀하십니다.
Eternal life is not something we create for ourselves. It is a gift received by the grace of God.
영생은 우리가 스스로 만들어 내는 것이 아닙니다. 하나님의 은혜로 받는 선물입니다.
Therefore, in faith, what matters more than “How perfect am I?” is “Whom am I holding on to as I live?”
그래서 신앙은 “내가 얼마나 완벽한가”보다, “내가 누구를 붙들고 살아가는가”가 더 중요합니다.
We may fall. We may make mistakes. There may be times when our faith is shaken. But what matters is returning again to Jesus.
넘어질 수 있습니다. 실수할 수도 있습니다. 믿음이 흔들릴 때도 있습니다. 그러나 중요한 것은 다시 예수님께 돌아오는 것입니다.
Because eternal life is not about becoming a perfect person, but about living together with God in Jesus Christ.
왜냐하면 영생은 완벽한 사람이 되는 것이 아니라, 예수님 안에서 하나님과 함께 살아가는 삶이기 때문입니다.
Therefore, we must not lose our souls by following only the standards of the world.
그러므로 우리는 세상의 기준만 따라가다가 자기 영혼을 잃어버리지 않아야 하겠습니다.
Our true life is found in God.
우리의 진짜 생명은 하나님 안에 있습니다.
Come to know the true God and Jesus Christ more deeply. Meet the Lord through His Word, speak with Him in prayer, and experience His love in your daily life.
참 하나님과 예수 그리스도를 깊이 알아가십시오. 말씀 속에서 주님을 만나고, 기도 속에서 주님과 대화하고, 삶 속에서 주님의 사랑을 경험하십시오.
Then our souls will come alive again.
그때 우리의 영혼은 다시 살아나게 될 것입니다.
3.Eternal life is a life held by the Lord through His Word and prayer. (6–11)
영생은 말씀과 기도 안에서 주님께 붙들리는 삶입니다.
Beginning in verse 6, Jesus starts praying for His disciples. This scene is deeply comforting.
예수님은 6절부터 제자들을 위해 기도하시기 시작하십니다. 이 장면은 참 따뜻합니다.
Jesus was about to be arrested, mocked, and crucified. Yet even in that situation, He did not think only about Himself. He embraced His disciples and prayed for them until the very end.
왜냐하면 예수님은 곧 체포당하시고, 조롱당하시고, 십자가를 지셔야 했습니다. 그런데 그런 상황 속에서도 예수님은 자신만 생각하지 않으셨습니다. 끝까지 제자들을 품고 기도하셨기 때문입니다.
In this, we see the heart of Jesus.
이 모습 속에서 우리는 예수님의 마음을 보게 됩니다.
In verse 6, Jesus says, “They were yours; you gave them to me, and they have obeyed your word.”
6절에서 예수님은 이렇게 말씀하십니다. “그들은 아버지의 것이었는데 내게 주셨으며 그들은 아버지의 말씀을 지키었나이다.”
Jesus gave His Word to the disciples. And through that Word, they slowly began to know who God is.
예수님은 제자들에게 말씀을 전하셨습니다. 그리고 그 말씀을 통해 제자들은 하나님이 누구신지를 조금씩 알아 가기 시작했습니다.
At first, the disciples were very lacking. They often misunderstood, became afraid, and even argued with one another. Yet Jesus did not give up on them. He continued teaching them through His Word.
처음 제자들은 많이 부족했습니다. 자주 오해했고, 두려워했고, 서로 다투기도 했습니다. 그런데도 예수님은 그들을 포기하지 않으셨습니다. 말씀으로 계속 가르치셨습니다.
The same is true for us. We are not instantly changed after hearing one sermon. Nor do we become completely strong after praying once.
우리도 마찬가지입니다. 한 번 설교 들었다고 바로 변화되지 않습니다. 한 번 기도했다고 완전히 강해지는 것도 아닙니다.
But as we continue listening to the Word, meditating on it, and holding on to it in our daily lives, our hearts slowly begin to change.
그러나 말씀을 계속 듣고, 묵상하고, 붙들고 살아갈 때 우리의 마음이 조금씩 바뀌기 시작합니다.
The person who once lived in anger begins to forgive, the anxious person begins to trust God, and the person who loved only themselves begins to embrace others.
분노하던 사람이 용서하기 시작하고, 불안하던 사람이 하나님을 신뢰하기 시작하고, 자기만 사랑하던 사람이 다른 사람을 품기 시작합니다.
The Word of God has the power to give life to people.
하나님의 말씀은 사람을 살리는 능력이 있습니다.
During youth, countless voices compete for attention. “You must succeed quickly.” “You must get ahead of others.” “If you are not recognized, you are a failure.” “Your worth is ultimately proven by your results.”
청년의 시기에는 수많은 목소리가 들립니다. “빨리 성공해야 한다.” “남보다 앞서야 한다.” “인정받지 못하면 실패한 것이다.” “네 가치도 결국 결과로 증명된다.”
When these voices begin to rule the heart, the soul easily becomes exhausted.
이런 말들이 마음을 지배하기 시작하면 영혼이 쉽게 지칩니다.
But the words of Jesus are different. “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened.” “I love you.” “Do not be afraid.” “I am with you.”
그러나 예수님의 말씀은 다릅니다. “수고하고 무거운 짐 진 자들아 다 내게로 오라.” “내가 너를 사랑한다.” “두려워하지 말라.” “내가 너와 함께한다.”
When the Word begins to enter the heart, the life once controlled by the standards of the world slowly begins to be restored.
말씀이 마음에 들어오기 시작하면 세상의 기준에 끌려다니던 삶이 조금씩 회복되기 시작합니다.
And in verse 8, Jesus says that the disciples accepted His Word. “They accepted them and knew with certainty that I came from you…”
그리고 8절에서 예수님은 제자들이 말씀을 받아들였다고 말씀하십니다. “그들은 이것을 받고 내가 아버지께로부터 나온 줄을 참으로 아오며…”
Faith is not merely the habit of attending church. It is receiving the Word into the heart.
믿음은 단순히 교회에 다니는 습관이 아닙니다. 말씀을 마음으로 받아들이는 것입니다.
Through the words of Jesus, we begin to confess, “I am not abandoned, but God’s child.” “I am not alone.” “God is still with me.”
예수님의 말씀을 통해 “나는 버려진 존재가 아니라 하나님의 자녀구나.” “나는 혼자가 아니구나.” “하나님이 지금도 나와 함께하시는구나.”라고 고백하게 됩니다.
When we begin to receive this truth into our hearts, our souls begin to live again.
이것을 마음으로 받아들이기 시작할 때 영혼이 살아나기 시작합니다.
And from verse 9, Jesus prays for His disciples. “I pray for them…”
그리고 9절부터 예수님은 제자들을 위해 기도하십니다. “내가 그들을 위하여 비옵나니…”
Jesus knew that the disciples would soon be shaken. He knew Peter would deny Him, and that the disciples would flee in fear.
예수님은 제자들이 앞으로 흔들릴 것을 알고 계셨습니다. 베드로가 예수님을 부인할 것도, 제자들이 두려워 도망갈 것도 알고 계셨습니다.
Yet Jesus did not abandon them. He held them through His prayers.
그런데도 예수님은 그들을 버리지 않으셨습니다. 기도로 붙드셨습니다.
In verse 11, Jesus prays, “Holy Father… protect them so that they may be one as we are one.”
11절에서는 이렇게 기도하십니다. “아버지여… 그들을 보전하사 우리와 같이 그들도 하나가 되게 하옵소서.”
The phrase “protect them” carries the meaning of guarding and holding them securely.
“보전하사”라는 말에는 지키시고 붙드신다는 의미가 있습니다.
Youth is filled with many struggles and uncertainties—career concerns, financial burdens, wounds from relationships, loneliness, anxiety about the future, and even shaking faith.
청년의 삶은 흔들림이 많습니다. 진로 문제, 경제적 부담, 관계의 상처, 외로움, 미래에 대한 불안, 신앙의 흔들림입니다.
So some young people quietly think to themselves, “Maybe my faith is too weak.” “Why do I keep wavering?” “Is God really holding on to me?”
그래서 어떤 청년들은 속으로 이렇게 생각합니다. “나는 믿음이 약한 것 같다.” “나는 왜 자꾸 흔들릴까?” “하나님은 정말 나를 붙들고 계실까?”
But today’s passage shows us a very important truth.
그런데 오늘 본문은 우리에게 아주 중요한 사실을 보여 줍니다.
Jesus is holding on to us even more tightly than we are holding on to God.
우리가 하나님을 붙드는 것보다, 예수님이 우리를 더 붙들고 계신다는 것입니다.
Even when we become weak, when prayer does not come easily, and when our hearts collapse, the Lord is still praying for us.
우리가 약해질 때에도, 기도가 잘 나오지 않을 때에도, 마음이 무너질 때에도, 주님은 우리를 위해 기도하고 계십니다.
Therefore, faith is not a battle we endure alone. It is the grace of being held in the hands of the Lord.
그래서 신앙은 혼자 버텨 내는 싸움이 아닙니다. 주님의 손에 붙들려 살아가는 은혜입니다.
The life of eternal life is not a life of becoming a perfect person. It is a life of remaining in the Word, remaining in prayer, and returning to the Lord again even after falling.
영생의 삶은 완벽한 사람이 되는 삶이 아닙니다. 말씀 안에 머물고, 기도 안에 머물며, 넘어져도 다시 주님께 돌아오는 삶입니다.
Therefore, we must not be led only by the voices of the world.
그러므로 우리는 세상의 소리에만 끌려가지 말아야 하겠습니다.
We must remain in the Word of God. We must return to the place of prayer.
하나님의 말씀 안에 머물러야 합니다. 기도 자리로 돌아와야 합니다.

Help us not to be shaken by the recognition and comparisons of the world, but to live a life that glorifies God.
