The Night Is Nearly Over, and the Day Is Near

Romans 13:1–14

When we look at the world around us, we see conflict, hatred, and many things that darken our hearts.

But Paul tells us not to be discouraged by the deepening darkness. He tells us to look toward the light of God that is drawing near.

“The night is nearly over; the day is almost here.”

This is not the time to remain asleep. It is time to wake up.

Today, through God’s Word, let us consider how Christians should live in this present age.

1. We Must Submit to the Authority of Leaders Appointed as God’s Servants. (1–7)

Authority Comes from God /

Romans 13 should be read in connection with Romans 12.

In chapter 12, Paul urged us to offer our bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God.

He also told us not to repay evil for evil. As far as possible, we are to live at peace with everyone and leave vengeance to God.

Now in chapter 13, Paul explains how this Christian way of life should be expressed in our attitude toward government and civil authority.

Paul says, “Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities.” (v. 1)

The reason is that “there is no authority except that which God has established.” (v. 1)

This does not mean that everything a ruler does is God’s will.

In Scripture, kings and leaders who acted against God’s will were rebuked and judged by God.

Paul’s point is that God has established authority so that society may not fall into disorder, but may preserve order and restrain evil.

Therefore, our submission to authority begins with recognizing God’s purpose for authority.

All Authority Is under God’s Sovereignty /

When Paul wrote Romans, Nero was the emperor of Rome. He would later become known for severely persecuting Christians.

Even so, Paul did not encourage disorderly resistance against civil authority. He called believers to trust God and do what is right within the order God had permitted.

“He is God’s servant to do you good.” (v. 4)

Paul calls the ruler “God’s servant” and explains the purpose of authority.

A leader is not called God’s servant because he or she is necessarily a Christian.

God has entrusted civil authority with the responsibility of maintaining order, restraining evil, and promoting good.

Therefore, every human authority remains under the sovereignty of God.

A leader is not the owner of authority who can exercise it however he wishes. A leader is a person entrusted with a responsibility by God.

Therefore, authority has God-given legitimacy, but it also has clear limits under the will of God.

Christians Obey from Conscience /

“It is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also because of conscience.” (v. 5)

Christians do not obey the law simply because they are afraid of punishment.

We respect order because we live before God even when no one is watching.

Paul also tells us to pay taxes and revenue and to give respect and honor where they are due. (vv. 6–7)

Our faith is revealed not only inside the church. It is also revealed in the way we live as citizens.

However, biblical submission is not unconditional obedience.

When human authority demands something contrary to God’s will, the apostles said, “We must obey God rather than men!”

Therefore, the Christian’s ultimate obedience belongs not to human beings but to God.

We respect the authority and order God has permitted. But we remember that God’s sovereignty stands above every human authority.

We respect human authority because we obey God.

This is the submission Romans 13 teaches.

Avoid the Two Extremes /

We can also be wounded by authority.

We may be hurt by parents or treated unfairly by a supervisor. We may be disappointed by a church leader.

We may also become angry or afraid because of the decisions and policies of political leaders.

When such experiences are repeated, we may say, “I will never trust anyone again.”

On the other hand, we may believe that faith requires us to remain silent and obey every authority without question.

But today’s Word leads us away from two extremes: rejecting all authority and obeying all authority unconditionally.

Biblical submission means neither rejecting authority altogether nor surrendering ourselves to it unconditionally.

We respect authority not because people are perfect, but because we trust the God who stands above every authority.

Participate Responsibly without Giving Politics Our Hearts /

In a democratic society, Christians should participate responsibly as citizens.

We can vote and express our opinions. We can also seek change through proper means when we believe a policy is wrong.

But we must be careful that political judgment does not turn into hatred toward people.

We may spend hours watching the news or YouTube and become angry. We may easily condemn people who think differently.

If political differences begin to separate us from family members or fellow believers, politics may be taking control of our hearts.

We can criticize leaders and oppose policies we believe are wrong. But we do not have to hate our leaders or turn those who disagree with us into enemies.

We should fulfill our responsibilities as citizens. But we can lay down the burden of believing that we must fix everything ourselves.

Governments change, and leaders change. But God does not change.

Our hope does not depend on who holds political power. Our hope is in God, who reigns above every authority.

Therefore, let us not allow politics to take away our hearts or our relationships.

Let us participate responsibly and respect those who think differently. After doing what we are called to do, let us entrust the results to God.

We live under human authority, but we do not give our hearts to human authority. Jesus Christ alone is Lord of our hearts and our lives.

May we trust the God who reigns above every authority. May we do what is right according to conscience and live responsibly wherever God has placed us.

2. Let No Debt Remain Outstanding, Except the Continuing Debt to Love One Another. (8–10)

The Debt of Love Never Ends /

In verses 1–7, Paul spoke about the Christian’s responsibility toward government and leaders. Beginning in verse 8, he extends that responsibility to our relationships with one another.

“Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another.” (v. 8)

This does not mean that all financial borrowing is forbidden. It means that we should not neglect the responsibilities we owe to others.

But Paul leaves us with one special debt: the debt of love.

Other debts can be paid off, but the debt of love is never finished.

Love is not a duty we perform once and finish. It is a way of life that continues every day.

Because the love we have received from God never ends, we continue sharing that love with others.

Love Is the Fulfillment of the Law /

Paul says, “He who loves his fellowman has fulfilled the law.” (v. 8)

He lists the commandments against adultery, murder, stealing, and coveting. Then he summarizes them with the command, “Love your neighbor as yourself.” (v. 9)

This does not mean that the law is unnecessary. It means that love is at the heart of the life the law requires.

Not committing adultery is an act of love because it protects another person’s family and relationships.

Not murdering is love because it values another person’s life.

Not stealing and not coveting are also acts of love. They respect what belongs to another person.

Therefore, biblical love is more than a feeling. It values and protects the life, relationships, and well-being of another person.

“Love does no harm to its neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.” (v. 10)

This gives us an important standard for discerning whether our love is genuine.

Even if I say, “I did it because I love you,” it is not biblical love if I use, wound, control, or tear down another person.

Love does not possess another person. Love seeks to give life.

Love does not seek to control another person according to my desires. It seeks what is truly good for that person.

Love Does Not Mean Exhausting Ourselves /

For some people, however, the command “Love one another” can feel like another heavy burden.

They may have spent their lives sacrificing for family and caring for parents. They may have given up their own needs for their children and found it difficult to say no even at church.

“I should endure. I should give in. If I love them, I should sacrifice.”

After living this way for a long time, the heart can become exhausted.

But owing a debt of love does not mean fulfilling every demand that others place upon us.

“Love your neighbor as yourself” does not mean completely exhausting ourselves in order to love others.

True love seeks the good of our neighbor. At the same time, it responsibly cares for the life God has entrusted to us.

Therefore, we need to distinguish between loving people and simply trying to please them.

Giving people everything they want is not always love. Sometimes saying “No” can also be an act of love.

Continuing to tolerate destructive behavior so that a person keeps repeating it is not necessarily love either.

Forgiveness means releasing hatred from our hearts. But broken trust and relationships may need responsible change and time before they can be rebuilt.

If hurt continues to be repeated in a relationship, simply enduring everything is not always love. Sometimes appropriate distance is necessary to prevent further harm.

Love Requires Discernment /

We need to ask ourselves, “Is my help truly building this person up, or is it allowing unhealthy dependence to continue?”

We should also ask, “Am I helping because I love this person, or because I am afraid they will dislike me if I say no?”

Such discernment keeps us from carrying endless burdens in the name of love. It helps us choose healthy love that gives life to both the other person and ourselves.

But we must also remember that we truly do owe others a debt of love.

We easily begin to calculate, “I have done this much for them. What have they done for me?”

But the gospel changes the way we calculate love.

The deepest reason we love is not how well someone has treated us. It is how deeply God has loved us.

We do not love in order to be loved. We love because we have already been loved by God.

Therefore, love is not a transaction. We share the love we have already received from God.

Love Begins with Small Steps /

The debt of love does not begin with something great. It begins with small acts such as making the first phone call or greeting someone from whom we have become distant.

Listening to someone who is struggling without judging them is also love. Saying “I’m sorry” and “Thank you” is also love.

Sometimes clearly saying “No” for another person’s true good can also be love.

True love moves in a direction that gives life to both the other person and ourselves.

Love builds people up rather than holding on to them. It helps stop destructive behavior rather than enabling it.

Love does not keep score of what we have received. It shares the grace we have received from God.

Think today about someone around you toward whom you can take one step of love.

This does not mean that we must take responsibility for everyone’s needs. We can do the love that is ours to do and entrust what we cannot carry to God.

If you have become tired from loving others, receive new strength from God.

If you loved someone and the relationship did not turn out as you hoped, your love was not wasted.

If you reached out first and the other person did not respond, that does not mean you failed.

God does not look only at the result. He also treasures the small steps we take in love.

Therefore, let us stop measuring love by what we receive from people. Let us begin again with the love we have received from God.

May we build one another up with the love we have received from God and live in the love that fulfills the law.

3. Since the Night Is Nearly Over and the Day Is Near, We Must Put On the Lord Jesus Christ. (11–14)

Know the Present Time / 우리가 살아가는 때를 알아야 합니다

In verses 1–7, Paul told us to respect authority and fulfill our responsibilities. In verses 8–10, he told us to continue in the debt of love.

Beginning in verse 11, Paul explains why we should live this way.

“And do this, understanding the present time. The hour has come for you to wake up from your slumber.” (v. 11)

The “time” Paul speaks about is more than time on a calendar. It is the time in which God is accomplishing his saving work through Jesus Christ.

Christians should live knowing where we stand in God’s history of salvation.

Paul describes this time with the images of night and day.

“The night is nearly over; the day is almost here.” (v. 12)

There is still sin, suffering, and injustice in the world. Weakness and temptation also remain within us.

But what matters is not only that the night is deep. The day is drawing near.

Christian hope does not deny the darkness. It believes that the darkness will not have the final word.

God’s new day is coming.

We have already received salvation. But the day is drawing near when Christ will return and bring our salvation to its completion.

Take Off the Darkness and Put On the Light /

Therefore, Paul says, “Let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light.” (v. 12)

There are two actions here: taking off and putting on.

Christian transformation does not end with putting away a sinful way of life. It means beginning a new life in Christ.

The deeds of darkness include not only orgies, drunkenness, sexual immorality, and debauchery. They also include dissension and jealousy.

Even if our outward lives appear respectable, we may continually compare ourselves with others, become jealous, and quarrel. If so, darkness may still be influencing our hearts. (v. 13)

“Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the sinful nature.” (v. 14)

To put on Jesus Christ means that the character of Jesus begins to appear in our thoughts, words, and actions.

The goal of the Christian life is not simply to avoid sin. It is to become more like Jesus every day.

We take off anger and put on gentleness. We take off jealousy and put on gratitude.

We leave conflict behind and seek reconciliation. We put aside self-centeredness and live in love.

This is what it means to put on Jesus Christ.

The Darkness Is Not the End /

There are seasons in our lives that feel like night.

We pray, but nothing seems to change. Family problems may continue for a long time.

Broken relationships may remain unreconciled. Sometimes we have worked hard for years and still find emptiness in our hearts.

Then we ask, “How long will this continue? Can anything really change?”

The Bible does not deny this reality. It says, “The night is nearly over.”

If life is hard, it is hard. If you are hurting, you are hurting.

If you need to cry, you can cry.

But the Word does not end there.

“The day is almost here.”

The darkness you are going through is not the end of your story.

An unresolved problem is not the final conclusion of our lives. God is still at work.

We Can Choose the Light Again /

Therefore, the important question is not only what kind of night we are going through. It is how we live while we are going through it.

Because we have been hurt, we do not have to hurt someone else.

Because we have been wronged, we do not have to take revenge. Because we have failed, we do not have to give up on ourselves.

We may be passing through the night, but we do not belong to the darkness.

Even after many years of faith, anger and comparison may return. Old habits and old wounds may also return.

Then we may condemn ourselves and say, “Why am I still like this?”

But transformation does not mean that every problem disappears at once.

Getting up again after we fall and choosing the light again is also transformation.

If you were angry yesterday, you can speak with gentleness today.

If you were discouraged yesterday, you can pray again today.

If you failed yesterday, you can begin again today.

Put On Jesus Christ Today /

Paul does not say, “Fix yourself.” He says, “Clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ.” (v. 14)

Therefore, instead of exhausting ourselves trying to change by our own strength, let us look to Jesus.

“Lord, today let me speak with your gentleness rather than my anger. Let me live in your peace rather than my fear.”

“Let me treat people with your love rather than through my wounds.”

And let us begin with something small.

When you are angry, hold back one hurtful word. Greet someone from whom you have become distant.

When you are wrong, say, “I’m sorry.”

Today, let us take off even one deed of darkness and put on the heart of Jesus.

Conclusion

The night is nearly over, and the day is near.

Therefore, we do not live according to the darkness.

We respect the order God has established. We continue in the debt of love and put aside the deeds of darkness.

And we clothe ourselves with Jesus Christ.

Today, we come to the Lord’s Table.

Communion is a time to remember again the love of Jesus, who gave his body and shed his blood for us.

We do not come because we are worthy. We come because we need his grace.

So let us come to the Lord with our weaknesses, failures, and wounds.

Let us remember again the love of Jesus who gave himself for us.

The night may be dark, but it will not last forever. The day is near.

Through this Communion, may we receive new strength from the grace of our Lord.

May we put on Jesus Christ and live with love and goodness wherever God has placed us.

Pastoral Prayer after the Sermon

Heavenly Father,

Thank you for giving us faith to believe that even though the night is deep, the day is drawing near.

In the midst of the conflict and confusion of this world, help us look to you, the God who reigns above every authority.

Help us fulfill our responsibilities faithfully as citizens and do what is right according to our conscience.

Help us remember the love we have received from you. Let us live in a love that builds others up rather than keeping score of what we have received.

Give new strength to those who have grown tired from loving others. Comfort those who are hurting from broken relationships and old wounds.

Help us put aside anger, jealousy, and conflict. Help us clothe ourselves with Jesus Christ every day.

When we fall, help us not to give up on ourselves. Help us rise again and choose gentleness, gratitude, and love.

As we come to the Lord’s Table today, help us remember again the love of Jesus, who gave his body and shed his blood for us.

Help us entrust our weaknesses, wounds, and heavy burdens to you.

Give hope to those who are passing through a dark season. Help them trust that you are still at work even in problems that remain unresolved.

Let your love and light be revealed through us in our homes, our church, and our workplaces.

Even when the night is dark, keep our eyes on the coming day. Help us put on Jesus Christ every day.

In the name of Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen.
