The Way of the Cross, the Way of Life
Matthew
Everyone likes an easier way. When the GPS says, “This route is 10 minutes faster,” we quickly take it.
But when that route takes us through one side street after another, we begin to think, “I should have just stayed on the original road.”
Life can be like that too. The easier road is not always the better road, and the harder road is not always the wrong road.
We look for the easier way, but Jesus shows us the way of life.
Today, Jesus calls us to follow Him on the way of the cross. Let us see how the way of the cross becomes the way of life.
1. The way of the cross is the way of putting human concerns behind us for the work of God. (21–23)
Jesus told His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem, suffer many things, be killed, and then be raised to life.
But Peter took Jesus aside and strongly protested.
“Never, Lord! This shall never happen to you!”
Peter said this because he loved Jesus and did not want Him to suffer.
Who could easily accept hearing that someone they love is going to suffer and die?
Even from the perspective of someone who does not believe in Jesus, Peter’s response seems very natural.
We also try to stop someone we love when they are about to take a difficult road.
“Why keep trying when no one seems to respond?”
“Can’t you choose an easier way?”
“You don’t have to suffer a loss just to do that.”
This is what we commonly think of as “human concerns.”
It does not mean that everything people do is wrong.
It is natural for us to want to avoid pain and loss and to want the people we love to be safe.
But Jesus responds to Peter very firmly.
“Get behind me, Satan!”
Jesus was not calling Peter Satan. He was rebuking the thought that tried to turn Him away from God’s will.
Then Jesus continued:
“You do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.”
Here we see the difference between the concerns of God and human concerns.
Human thinking first asks, “How can I avoid this suffering?”
Jesus first asked, “What does God want me to do?”
For Jesus, suffering itself was not the purpose of the cross. The purpose was to save people.
Avoiding the cross could avoid suffering for the moment, but it would also mean turning away from the way of salvation God intended to accomplish.
Thinking about the work of God, then, does not mean always choosing suffering.
Nor does it mean deliberately choosing the harder road whenever there is an easier one.
It means asking first what is right, what brings life to others, and what God desires from us.
There are things in our lives that we also want to avoid.
We may want to forgive, but the pain may be so deep that we find it difficult to do so.
We may be exhausted from caring for our family, or carrying a responsibility faithfully even when no one notices.
Sometimes we do what is right and still suffer loss, love someone and get hurt, or serve faithfully without being recognized.
There are people who spend years caring for a sick spouse or child, often with little help or recognition from others.
In such a situation, it is natural to ask, “Why do I have to carry this burden alone?”
At times like this, a helpful question is, “Am I stepping away simply because it is hard, or am I walking away from what God has entrusted to me?”
At such times, we may think, “Why do I have to suffer like this?”
But Jesus is not simply telling us, “Even if it is hard, just endure it.”
Jesus Himself experienced betrayal, abandonment, and the pain of the cross.
Therefore, the Lord does not take our pain lightly.
Instead, we need to ask ourselves:
“Am I stepping away because it is hard, or am I walking away from what God has called me to do?”
First, we need healing for our wounds, rest when we are weary, and help when we cannot carry the burden alone.
We should not think that continuing to be hurt in an unhealthy relationship is our cross.
The cross is not a path that destroys us but a path that ultimately brings life.
Putting human concerns behind us does not mean ignoring our feelings or our pain.
But we must not allow fear or pain to determine the direction of our lives.
Jesus also knew the pain and suffering that awaited Him.
But He did not let the fear of suffering turn Him away from the will of God.
He walked the way of the cross because He knew that beyond the suffering was the resurrection.
We should not misjudge our situation based only on the difficulties we are facing now.
God is still doing the work of life even where we cannot yet see it.
May we put God’s will before our fears and trust in the restoration He will bring beyond our wounds.
May the way of the cross we walk become a way of life that brings healing and hope to us and to others.
2. The way of life is the way of denying ourselves, taking up our cross, and following the Lord. (24)
After rebuking Peter, Jesus turned to His disciples and taught them what it means to follow Him.
“Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.”
Jesus calls us not only to believe in Him, but to follow Him with our lives.
To follow Jesus means to let our faith shape the way we live each day.
The first thing Jesus says we must do to follow Him is deny ourselves.
Denying ourselves does not mean hating ourselves or thinking that we have no value.
Nor does it mean ignoring our feelings or needs.
Denying ourselves means giving Jesus, not ourselves, the first place in our lives.
We all want to live according to our own thoughts.
We want what we desire, we want others to acknowledge that we are right, and we want to be respected.
These desires are a natural part of who we are.
But sometimes what we want and what the Lord wants are different.
For example, sometimes restoring a relationship is more important than proving that we are right.
Sometimes reaching out first is more important than protecting our pride.
That is when we need the faith to deny ourselves.
Instead of asking only, “What do I want?” we ask, “What does the Lord want?”
Denying ourselves is not giving up who we are, but allowing the Lord to lead our lives.
Imagine two brothers who have been distant for years because each believes he is right.
Neither wants to reach out first because doing so feels like admitting that he was wrong.
But one day, one of them asks himself, “What matters more—proving that I am right, or restoring this relationship?”
He still believes he has reasons to be hurt, but he decides to put down his pride and reach out first.
So he picks up the phone and calls his brother. He does not begin by arguing about who was right or wrong. He simply says, “I miss you. I don’t want us to live like this anymore.”
That humble decision to reach out first can become the beginning of restoring a relationship that has been broken for years.
Denying ourselves can begin with laying down something as small—and as difficult—as our pride.
Then Jesus tells us to “take up our cross” and follow Him.
In Jesus’ time, the cross was not a decoration or religious symbol but an instrument of death.
The disciples would have understood that following Jesus required a serious commitment.
But an important phrase here is “their cross.”
Each person has a different responsibility to carry as we follow the Lord.
For one person, it may be faithfully loving and caring for family.
For another, it may mean praying through the difficult process of forgiving someone who caused deep hurt.
For another, it may mean faithfully carrying out a responsibility in a place where no one notices.
Therefore, we do not need to compare our lives with the lives of others.
The Lord calls each of us in different places and asks us to follow Him there.
Each of us has a cross to carry, but we do not carry it alone—the Lord walks with us.
Sometimes we become exhausted after spending a long time living for others.
We may give our best to our family, children, and church, yet sometimes grow weary when our efforts seem unnoticed.
For such a person, the words “deny yourself and take up your cross” should not simply be applied as a command to endure more and sacrifice more.
Taking up our cross does not mean carrying every burden that other people place upon us.
Some burdens come from the expectations of others, and some we cannot release because of guilt.
Some burdens we may have taken upon ourselves simply because we want the approval of others.
Therefore, we need to ask, “Lord, is this really the cross You have entrusted to me?”
We need to be able to lay down the burdens the Lord has not given us.
If someone truly cannot handle something alone, or if that person would be in serious difficulty without our help, we should be willing to help.
But sometimes people continue to depend on others even when they are able to take responsibility for themselves.
Because it may seriously disrupt our own lives without truly helping the other person.
And if it is a cross the Lord has entrusted to us, we should not try to carry it alone.
Taking up the cross is not just about enduring hardship, but about following Jesus through it.
The way of the cross depends not on our strength, but on following Jesus.
Taking up our cross means trusting the Lord and faithfully walking the path He has given us.
May we deny ourselves without losing ourselves, and lay down the burdens we do not need to carry.
May we trust the Lord, carry the cross entrusted to us, and follow Him on the way of life.
3. It is the way of entrusting our lives to the Lord in order to receive life that is worth more than the whole world. (25–28)
Jesus then explains why following Him requires us to take up our cross.
“For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.”
At first, these words may be difficult to understand.
Jesus is not telling us that our lives are unimportant.
Nor is He telling us to treat our lives carelessly or deliberately seek suffering.
Jesus is asking us to entrust our lives to Him.
We naturally want to stay in control of our lives.
We want stability, we do not want to lose what we have, and we do not want to fail.
These desires are not wrong in themselves.
But when we try to control everything in our lives, we become more afraid of losing control.
We become afraid of losing what we have, of failing, or of not being recognized.
So we look for security in what we have, what we achieve, and how others see us.
But Jesus asks a very important question:
“What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?”
We can gain many things and still lose what matters most.
We may succeed, make money, and reach a position that others admire.
But if we gain everything while losing our family, relationships, peace, faith, and even ourselves, what good is it?
There are people who devote their whole lives to building a successful career or business, only to realize later how distant they have become from those they love.
The world may call them successful, yet they may look back and ask what was lost along the way.
Jesus’ question brings us to this very point: not only what have we gained, but what have we lost in gaining it?
Jesus is not saying that success or wealth is wrong.
What matters is not what we have, but how much it controls our lives.
We need money, but money must not become the lord of our lives.
Success is good, but our worth does not depend on how successful we are.
It is good to be recognized, but our identity should not depend on what others think of us.
Then Jesus asks another question:
“Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?”
Even everything in this world cannot be exchanged for one human life.
The world often measures a person’s worth by how much they earn, what they have accomplished, or how capable they are.
But God does not see us that way.
Even when we grow older and cannot do what we once did, our lives are still precious.
Even when we fail, when people do not recognize us, or when we do not have much, we are still precious.
To God, one human life is worth more than the whole world.
God tells us this:
“You are precious and honored in my sight, and I love you.” (Isaiah 43:4)
Our worth does not depend on what we have achieved.
Even when we count our own lives a failure, God still calls us precious and honored.
This single verse, held firmly, is enough to keep us from being shaken.
Life does not always go according to our plans.
We may work hard and not receive the result we expected, or something we devoted our entire life to may disappear.
As we grow older, we may no longer be able to do some of the things we once could.
At such times, looking at what we have lost can make us feel as though our whole life has failed.
What we lose does not change how precious we are to God.
Trusting this, we can entrust our lives to the Lord.
It means admitting that we cannot control everything and trusting the Lord even when things do not go the way we want.
Entrusting our lives to the Lord does not mean giving up on life.
Rather, it means laying down the heavy burden of believing that we must control and take responsibility for everything.
Jesus says that He will come in His Father’s glory and reward each person according to what they have done.
So what we see now is not the final result.
Our success or failure does not define our lives—God has the final word.
Faith is trusting that God is holding on to us.
May we not lose ourselves trying to gain everything, but entrust our precious lives to the Lord.
May we follow the way of the cross that leads to eternal life.
Let me bring today’s message to a close.
The way of the cross did not end in death. Beyond the cross was resurrection and life.
We must lay down our own thoughts, carry our cross, and entrust our lives to the Lord.
The way of the cross is not an easy way. But when we walk it with Jesus, it becomes the way of life.
Remember the GPS from the beginning.
We are always looking for the faster, easier route.
But Jesus never promised us a shortcut.
Instead He says, “This road may look slower and harder—but if I walk it with you, it leads to life.”
Choosing not the fastest route our life’s GPS points to, but the road Jesus walks with us—that is the choice set before us today.
May we focus not on what we gain or lose, but on whom we are following.
May we walk with the Lord on the way of the cross, the way of life.
Pastoral Prayer
Gracious and loving Heavenly Father, thank You for teaching us today that the way of the cross is the way of life.
Help us seek Your will above our own, deny ourselves, and take up the cross You have entrusted to each of us—not the burdens we have taken upon ourselves.
When we are weary, meet us in our wounds and fears, and lift our eyes to the hope of resurrection and life.
Lord, who values our lives more than the whole world, let us find our worth in You alone, not in success or the approval of others.
We entrust our families, our health, and our future into Your hands.
Make our church one in faith, hope, and love—a people who bring life to our neighbors.
We pray in the name of Jesus Christ, who carried the cross for us and rose again. Amen.

Questions and Answers for Understanding the Main Message
1. What is the difference between “human concerns” and “the concerns of God”?
Human concerns focus first on avoiding pain, loss, and difficulty. The concerns of God ask what is right, what brings life to others, and what God desires from us.
2. What does it mean to deny ourselves and take up our cross?
Denying ourselves means allowing Jesus to lead our lives instead of putting ourselves first. Taking up our cross means faithfully carrying what the Lord has entrusted to us while following Him.
3. What does Jesus mean when He says that whoever loses their life for Him will find it?
Jesus is not telling us to throw our lives away. He is calling us to entrust our lives to Him, trusting that our true life and worth are found in God rather than in possessions, success, or recognition.

2. Is there an area of your life where you need to ask, “What do I want?” and then, “What does the Lord want?” What might it mean to follow Jesus in that situation?

3. What are you most afraid of losing—possessions, success, health, relationships, or recognition? How can knowing that you are precious to God help you entrust that area of your life to Him?
