겸손한 평화의 왕
스가랴 Zechariah 9:9-17
Today's passage reveals what kind of King God sends to His people.
오늘 본문은 하나님께서 보내시는 왕이 어떤 분이신지를 보여 줍니다.
People were expecting a powerful king who would destroy their enemies by force.
사람들은 강한 힘으로 원수를 무너뜨릴 왕을 기대했습니다.
But God sent a humble King of peace who rode on a donkey.
그러나 하나님께서는 나귀를 타신 겸손한 평화의 왕을 보내셨습니다.
Jesus is not a King who rules us by force, but One who reigns over us with righteousness and peace.
예수님은 힘으로 우리를 누르시는 왕이 아니라, 공의와 평화로 우리를 다스리시는 왕이십니다.
He delivers us from the pit of despair, raises us up as warriors of hope, and ultimately makes us shine like jewels in His royal crown.
예수님은 절망의 구덩이에 갇힌 우리를 건져 내시고, 소망의 용사로 세우시며, 마침내 왕관의 보석처럼 귀하게 빛나게 하십니다.
Through today's passage, let us see how Jesus, the humble King of peace, restores us and builds us up.
오늘 말씀을 통해 겸손한 평화의 왕이신 예수님께서 우리를 어떻게 회복하시고 세워 가시는지 함께 살펴보겠습니다.
1. He Comes to Rule Us with Righteousness and Peace (9–10)
우리에게 오셔서 공의와 평화로 다스리십니다.
When Zechariah proclaimed this prophecy, Israel had lost hope because they were living under the rule of powerful foreign nations.
스가랴가 이 말씀을 전할 당시, 이스라엘은 강대국들의 지배를 받고 있었기 때문에 미래에 대한 희망을 잃어가고 있었습니다.
So they longed for a mighty king.
그래서 사람들은 강한 왕을 기다렸습니다.
They expected a hero who would defeat their enemies with swords and chariots.
칼과 병거를 앞세워 원수를 물리칠 영웅을 기대한 것입니다.
But the King God promised was completely different from what they expected.
그런데 하나님께서 약속하신 왕은 사람들의 예상과는 전혀 달랐습니다.
"See, your King comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey." (v. 9)
"보라 네 왕이 네게 임하시나니 그는 공의로우시며 구원을 베푸시며 겸손하여 나귀를 타시나니." (9절)
Although He is the righteous King who brings salvation, He comes riding not on a war horse but on a donkey.
그는 공의로우시며 구원을 베푸실 왕인데, 군마가 아니라 나귀를 타신다는 것입니다.
In those days, the war horse symbolized battle, while the donkey symbolized peace.
당시 군마는 전쟁의 상징이었고, 나귀는 평화의 상징이었습니다.
The Messiah God sends is not a king who forces people into submission, but a King who restores them through love.
하나님께서 보내시는 메시아는 사람을 힘으로 굴복시키는 왕이 아니라 사랑으로 회복시키시는 왕이시기 때문입니다.
Verse 10 continues with these words:
그리고 10절은 이렇게 이어집니다.
"I will take away the chariots... and the battle bow will be broken. He will proclaim peace to the nations."
"내가 병거를 끊으며 전쟁하는 활도 끊으리니 그가 이방 사람에게 화평을 전할 것이요."
Jesus came to bring an end to war and establish peace.
예수님은 전쟁을 멈추고 평화를 만들기 위해 오셨습니다.
In other words, Jesus did not come to change the world by force.
그러니까 예수님은 힘으로 세상을 바꾸러 오신 분이 아니라는 뜻입니다.
He came to transform our hearts.
주님은 우리의 마음을 바꾸러 오셨습니다.
He judges sin, yet He opens the way of repentance for sinners.
죄를 심판하시지만 죄인에게는 회개의 길을 열어 주기 원하십니다.
He never ignores our wounds, nor does He abandon those who are broken.
우리의 상처를 외면하지 않으시고, 상처 입은 사람을 버리지도 않으십니다.
He establishes righteousness, but His righteousness ultimately leads to peace.
공의를 세우시지만 그 공의는 결국 평화를 이루기 위한 공의입니다.
Therefore, the reign of Jesus is not about oppression, but restoration.
그래서 예수님의 통치는 억압이 아니라 회복입니다.
It is not about fear, but about peace.
또한 두려움이 아니라 평안입니다.
Perhaps we, too, are still living as people who are waiting for a king.
어쩌면 오늘 우리도 여전히 왕을 기다리며 살아가고 있는지 모릅니다.
However, the kind of king we expect may be different from the King God has sent.
그러나 우리가 기대하는 왕의 모습은 하나님께서 보내시는 왕의 모습과 다를 수 있습니다.
We want a king who will solve our problems quickly.
우리는 우리의 문제를 빨리 해결해 주는 왕을 원합니다.
We hope for a king who will make our business prosper, heal our illnesses immediately, and help us gain the approval of others.
사업을 잘되게 해 주고, 병을 즉시 낫게 해 주며, 사람들에게 인정받게 해 주는 왕을 기대합니다.
We may also be waiting for someone who will fulfill all our plans without delay.
또 우리의 계획을 지체 없이 이루어 주시는 분을 기다리고 있는지도 모릅니다.
But Jesus touches our hearts before He changes our circumstances.
그러나 예수님은 우리의 환경보다 먼저 우리의 마음을 만지십니다.
We often think we will have peace if our circumstances change.
우리는 환경이 바뀌면 평안해질 것이라고 생각합니다.
But Jesus gives us a peaceful heart so that we can endure our circumstances.
하지만 예수님은 우리에게 평안한 마음을 주셔서 그 환경을 견디게 하십니다.
We think we will be happy if other people change.
우리는 상대방이 변해야 행복해질 것이라고 생각합니다.
But Jesus begins by changing our own hearts.
그러나 예수님은 먼저 우리의 마음을 변화시켜 가십니다.
We believe we must succeed before we can be satisfied.
우리는 성공해야 만족할 수 있다고 생각합니다.
But Jesus first teaches us to find our satisfaction in God.
그러나 예수님은 하나님 안에서 만족하는 마음을 먼저 갖게 하십니다.
That is why the reign of Jesus always begins in our hearts.
그래서 예수님의 통치는 언제나 우리의 마음에서 시작됩니다.
Some among us are still living with hearts that feel like a battlefield.
우리 가운데는 아직도 전쟁 같은 마음으로 살아가는 이들이 있습니다.
A single hurtful word from someone still remains as a deep wound.
누군가의 말 한마디가 오래도록 마음의 상처로 남아 있습니다.
Past failures continue to condemn us.
과거의 실패가 계속 우리 자신을 정죄하게 만듭니다.
Our hearts cannot rest because of memories we have not forgiven.
용서하지 못한 기억 때문에 마음이 쉬지 못합니다.
We may also live in constant tension because we are anxious about the future.
앞으로의 삶이 불안하여 늘 긴장 속에 살아가기도 합니다.
Outwardly, everything may appear to be fine, but inwardly the battle still continues.
겉으로는 아무 일 없는 것처럼 살아가지만, 마음속에서는 여전히 전쟁이 계속되고 있는 것입니다.
When we open the door of our hearts, the Lord comes into our lives. He heals our wounds, replaces our fears with peace, and leads us in righteousness and love.
우리가 마음의 문을 열 때, 주님은 우리 안에 들어오셔서 우리의 상처를 치유하시고, 두려움을 평안으로 바꾸시며, 우리의 삶을 공의와 사랑으로 이끌어 가십니다.
When we entrust our hearts to Jesus, our wounds may not disappear overnight.
예수님께 우리의 마음을 맡길 때 상처가 하루아침에 사라지지 않을 수도 있습니다.
Our problems may not be solved immediately.
문제가 즉시 해결되지 않을 수도 있습니다.
Yet one thing is certain: peace begins to fill the heart that once felt like a battlefield.
그러나 분명한 것은 전쟁 같던 마음에 평안이 찾아오기 시작합니다.
Even if our circumstances remain the same, our hearts are changed.
상황은 같아도 마음은 달라집니다.
We may still have tears, but we no longer live in despair.
눈물은 있어도 절망하지 않습니다.
We may still face hardships, but we are no longer crushed by them.
고난은 있어도 무너지지 않습니다.
For the King of Peace now reigns within us.
왜냐하면 평화의 왕께서 우리 안에 다스리시기 때문입니다.
Jesus was not the mighty king the world expected, but He was the King we needed most.
예수님은 세상이 기대한 강한 왕은 아니셨지만, 우리에게 가장 필요한 왕이셨습니다.
He is not a King who conquers people by force, but the King who conquered sin and death through the love of the cross.
힘으로 사람을 눌러 이기시는 왕이 아니라, 십자가의 사랑으로 죄와 죽음을 이기신 왕이십니다.
Even today, the humble King of Peace comes to us.
오늘도 그 겸손한 평화의 왕께서 우리에게 오십니다.
May we welcome Him into the center of our hearts and live as God's people, enjoying the peace that the world can never give. I pray this in the name of our Lord.
우리도 그 왕을 마음의 중심에 모시고, 세상이 줄 수 없는 평안 가운데 살아가는 하나님의 백성이 되기를 축원합니다.
2. He Makes Those Who Hope in Him into Mighty Warriors, Even While They Are Still Captive (11–13)
갇혀 있어도 소망을 품는 자를 용사로 세우십니다.
The King of Peace restores our hearts not merely to comfort us.
평화의 왕이 오셔서 우리의 마음을 회복시키시는 이유는 단지 우리를 위로하시기 위해서만은 아닙니다.
He restores us so that He may raise us up and use us as His servants.
주님은 회복된 우리를 다시 일으켜 세워 하나님의 일꾼으로 사용하시기 원하십니다.
That is why verse 11 says,
그래서 11절은 이렇게 말씀합니다.
“As for you, because of the blood of My covenant with you, I will free your prisoners from the waterless pit.”
“또 너로 말할진대 네 언약의 피로 말미암아 내가 네 갇힌 자들을 물 없는 구덩이에서 놓았나니.”
Here, “the prisoners” refer to God's people who have lost their freedom.
여기서 ‘갇힌 자들’은 자유를 잃어버린 하나님의 백성을 가리킵니다.
They are alive physically, yet they are bound by sin, fear, and despair, unable to free themselves.
겉으로는 살아 있지만, 죄와 두려움과 절망에 묶여 스스로 빠져나올 수 없는 사람들입니다.
The “waterless pit” represents a place of hopelessness from which no one can escape by their own strength.
또 ‘물 없는 구덩이’는 사람이 자기 힘으로는 결코 빠져나올 수 없는 절망의 자리를 의미합니다.
In those days, prisoners were often thrown into deep pits where there was no water and very little light.
당시에는 죄수들을 물도 없고 빛도 잘 들어오지 않는 깊은 구덩이에 가두기도 했습니다.
No matter how hard they struggled, they could never climb out by themselves.
그곳은 아무리 몸부림쳐도 스스로 나올 수 없는 곳이었습니다.
But God declares,
그런데 하나님은 말씀하십니다.
“I will bring you out of that place.”
“내가 너를 그곳에서 건져 내겠다.”
Why does He do this?
왜 그렇게 하십니까?
Verse 11 explains, “Because of the blood of My covenant with you.”
11절은 “네 언약의 피로 말미암아”라고 설명합니다.
This means that God faithfully keeps the covenant He has made with His people to the very end.
이것은 하나님께서 자기 백성과 맺으신 약속을 끝까지 지키신다는 뜻입니다.
He saves us not because we are perfect, but because He is faithful.
우리가 완전해서가 아니라, 하나님께서 신실하시기 때문에 우리를 구원하시는 것입니다.
Today we see this truth most clearly at the cross of Jesus Christ.
오늘 우리는 이 말씀을 예수님의 십자가에서 더욱 분명하게 봅니다.
The blood of Jesus not only forgives our sins but also has the power to deliver us from the pit of sin and despair.
예수님의 보혈은 우리의 죄를 용서하실 뿐 아니라, 죄와 절망의 구덩이에서 우리를 건져 내시는 능력이 됩니다.
We are here today not because we held on to God, but because God has held on to us until the very end.
우리가 하나님을 붙든 것이 아니라, 하나님께서 우리를 끝까지 붙드셨기 때문에 오늘 우리가 여기 있는 것입니다.
Then God continues by saying,
그래서 하나님은 이어서 말씀하십니다.
“Return to your stronghold, you prisoners of hope.”
“갇혀 있으나 소망을 품은 자들아 너희는 요새로 돌아올지니라.”
What an amazing declaration!
얼마나 놀라운 말씀입니까?
Even while they are still in the pit, God calls them “prisoners of hope.”
아직 구덩이 속에 있는데도 하나님은 그들을 “소망을 품은 자”라고 부르십니다.
Our hope does not come because our circumstances have changed.
환경이 바뀌었기 때문에 소망을 가지는 것이 아닙니다.
Our hope comes because God has given us His promise.
하나님의 약속이 있기 때문에 소망을 품는 것입니다.
Faith is not denying reality.
믿음은 현실을 부인하는 것이 아닙니다.
It is trusting God's promises more than our present circumstances.
현실보다 하나님의 약속을 더 신뢰하는 것입니다.
Then God says, “Return to the stronghold.”
그리고 하나님은 “요새로 돌아오라.”고 말씀하십니다.
A stronghold is a fortified place that provides safety from the attacks of the enemy.
요새는 적의 공격으로부터 안전하게 보호받는 견고한 성입니다.
God does not stop after rescuing us from the pit of despair.
하나님은 우리를 절망의 구덩이에서 끌어내시는 것으로 끝내지 않으십니다.
He brings us back to Himself so that we may live under His protection and grace.
다시 하나님 안으로 돌아오게 하시고, 하나님의 보호와 은혜 가운데 살아가게 하십니다.
Our true refuge is not the security this world offers, but God Himself.
세상의 안전이 아니라 하나님 자신이 우리의 요새가 되어 주시는 것입니다.
Even today, some among us are trapped in different kinds of pits.
오늘도 우리 가운데는 여러 가지 구덩이에 갇혀 있는 이들이 있습니다.
Some are trapped in the pit of financial hardship.
경제적인 어려움이라는 구덩이가 있습니다.
Others are trapped in the pit of illness.
건강의 문제라는 구덩이가 있습니다.
Some are trapped in the pit of loneliness because broken relationships have left them isolated.
관계가 깨어져 외로움이라는 구덩이가 있습니다.
Others have given up on themselves because they are caught in long-standing sins and destructive habits.
오랫동안 반복되는 죄와 습관 때문에 스스로를 포기한 이들도 있습니다.
Still others cannot take even one step forward because they are imprisoned by memories of past failures.
또 어떤 이들은 실패의 기억 때문에 앞으로 한 걸음도 나아가지 못하고 있습니다.
But when we honestly look at ourselves, we realize that some of those pits were not dug by the world—they were dug by our own hands.
그런데 가만히 돌아보면, 어떤 구덩이는 세상이 우리를 밀어 넣은 것이 아니라 우리가 스스로 판 구덩이이기도 합니다.
Instead of trusting God, we relied on our own thoughts and methods. Instead of following His Word, we followed the standards of the world, and before we knew it, we found ourselves in a pit of despair.
하나님을 의지하기보다 자신의 생각과 방법을 앞세우고, 말씀보다 세상의 기준을 따라 살다가 어느새 절망의 구덩이에 빠져 있는 것입니다.
That is why God says in Jeremiah 2:13,
그래서 하나님은 예레미야 2장 13절에서 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다.
“My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken Me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water.”
“내 백성이 두 가지 악을 행하였나니 곧 그들이 생수의 근원 되는 나를 버린 것과 스스로 웅덩이를 판 것인데, 그 웅덩이는 물을 가두지 못할 터진 웅덩이들이니라.”
There are times when we trust the world's ways more than we trust God.
우리는 하나님보다 세상의 방법을 더 의지할 때가 있습니다.
But a life apart from God ultimately leads us into even deeper despair.
그러나 하나님을 떠난 삶은 결국 우리를 더 깊은 절망으로 이끌 뿐입니다.
The deeper our despair becomes, the more we focus on our present circumstances rather than on God's promises.
절망이 깊어질수록 우리는 하나님의 약속보다 눈앞의 현실을 더 크게 보게 됩니다.
At that point, people begin to say,
그때 사람들은 말합니다.
“It’s too late now.”
“이제는 늦었어.”
“You can never change.”
“너는 달라질 수 없어.”
“It’s easier just to give up.”
“포기하는 것이 편해.”
These are the voices that often echo in our hearts.
우리 마음속에서도 이런 소리가 들려옵니다.
“I'll never make it.”
“나는 안 될 거야.”
“My life is already too far gone.”
“내 인생은 이미 늦었어.”
“Even God must have given up on me.”
“하나님도 나를 포기하셨을 거야.”
Thoughts like these gradually tear our hearts down.
이런 생각들은 우리의 마음을 조금씩 무너뜨립니다.
But God does not speak to us that way.
그러나 하나님은 그렇게 말씀하지 않으십니다.
Even while we are still in the pit, God says to us,
하나님은 아직 구덩이 속에 있는 우리를 향해 말씀하십니다.
“You are not finished yet.”
“너는 아직 끝난 사람이 아니다.”
“I have not given up on you.”
“나는 너를 포기하지 않았다.”
“Even when you let go of Me, I was still holding on to you.”
“네가 나를 놓을 때에도 나는 너를 붙들고 있었다.”
“My promises never change.”
“내 약속은 변하지 않는다.”
“You may see only the pit, but I see what lies beyond it.”
“네 눈에는 구덩이만 보이지만 나는 그 너머를 보고 있다.”
“So do not lose hope.”
“그러니 소망을 잃지 말아라.”
“Trust Me just a little longer.”
“조금만 더 나를 신뢰하여라.”
“I will raise you up again.”
“내가 너를 다시 일으킬 것이다.”
The world judges people by what they are today.
세상은 현재의 모습을 보고 사람을 평가합니다.
But God calls us according to what He will make us become.
그러나 하나님은 앞으로 이루실 모습을 보시고 우리를 부르십니다.
Even if we are in a pit that we dug ourselves, God remembers His covenant and never gives up on us.
우리가 스스로 빠진 구덩이라 할지라도, 하나님은 언약을 기억하시며 우리를 포기하지 않으십니다.
The Lord does more than simply comfort us.
주님은 우리를 위로만 하시는 분이 아닙니다.
He restores our hope.
소망을 회복시켜 주십니다.
He revives our faith.
믿음을 다시 일으켜 주십니다.
He gives us the courage to live according to His will.
하나님의 뜻을 따라 살아갈 용기를 주십니다.
And in the end, He establishes us as people who are useful for His kingdom.
그리고 마침내 하나님의 나라를 위해 쓰임 받는 사람으로 세워 주십니다.
Verse 13 gives us an even more remarkable picture.
그리고 13절은 더욱 놀라운 말씀을 들려줍니다.
God says that He will make Judah His bow and Ephraim His arrow.
하나님은 유다를 활로, 에브라임을 화살로 삼으시겠다고 말씀하십니다.
Neither a bow nor an arrow can accomplish anything by itself.
활도 화살도 혼자서는 아무 일도 할 수 없습니다.
A bow needs an arrow, and an arrow must be held by the bow in order to fly toward its target.
활은 화살이 있어야 하고, 화살은 활에 붙들려야 목적지를 향해 날아갈 수 있습니다.
The same is true for us.
우리도 마찬가지입니다.
We cannot accomplish God's work by our own strength.
우리 자신의 힘으로는 하나님의 일을 감당할 수 없습니다.
But when we are held in God's hands, even ordinary people become His mighty warriors.
그러나 하나님의 손에 붙들릴 때 평범한 사람도 하나님의 용사가 됩니다.
The same was true of Moses, Gideon, and Peter.
모세도 그랬고, 기드온도 그랬고, 베드로도 그랬습니다.
They were not used because they were extraordinary.
그들이 특별해서 쓰임 받은 것이 아닙니다.
They became God's mighty warriors because they were held in His hands.
하나님의 손에 붙들렸기 때문에 하나님의 용사가 된 것입니다.
Today, the Lord speaks to us as well.
오늘도 주님은 우리에게 말씀하십니다.
“It is not because you are weak that I cannot use you.”
“네가 약해서 쓰지 못하는 것이 아니다.”
“When you are held in My hand, you become a warrior whom I can use.”
“내 손에 붙들릴 때 너는 내가 사용하는 용사가 된다.”
Therefore, we must hold on to God's promises rather than our despair.
그러므로 우리는 절망보다 하나님의 약속을 붙들어야 합니다.
The covenant blood of Jesus Christ not only has the power to rescue us from the pit of despair, but also the power to restore us for the work of God's kingdom.
예수 그리스도의 언약의 피는 우리를 절망의 구덩이에서 건져 내는 능력일 뿐 아니라, 하나님의 나라를 위해 다시 세우는 능력이기도 합니다.
Therefore, we are no longer people trapped in the pit.
그러므로 이제 우리는 더 이상 구덩이에 갇힌 사람이 아닙니다.
We are people who have been rescued by the covenant blood of Jesus Christ.
예수 그리스도의 언약의 피로 건짐 받은 사람입니다.
Even today, God raises up those who hold on to hope, even while they are still captive, and makes them His mighty warriors.
그리고 하나님께서는 오늘도 갇혀 있어도 소망을 품는 사람을 하나님의 용사로 세우십니다.
No matter what circumstances we may face, may we hold fast to God's promises, rise up in faith, and live as warriors of hope who delight the heart of God. I pray this in the name of the Lord.
우리 모두가 어떤 현실 속에 있든지 하나님의 약속을 붙들고 믿음으로 일어나, 하나님께서 기뻐하시는 소망의 용사로 살아가기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.
3. He Saves His People and Makes Them Shine Like Jewels in His Crown (14–17)
자기 백성을 구원하시고 왕관의 보석처럼 귀하게 하십니다.
Zechariah now shows us God Himself fighting on behalf of His people.
이제 스가랴는 하나님께서 자기 백성을 위해 직접 싸우시는 모습을 보여 줍니다.
Verse 14 says,
14절은 이렇게 말씀합니다.
“The LORD will appear over them…”
“여호와께서 그들 위에 나타나시리니...”
Now it is no longer God's people fighting for Him.
이제는 백성이 하나님을 위해 싸우는 것이 아닙니다.
God Himself fights for His people.
하나님께서 자기 백성을 위해 싸우십니다.
Israel experienced countless wars throughout its history.
이스라엘은 오랫동안 수많은 전쟁을 겪었습니다.
There were many enemies they could never defeat by their own strength.
자신들의 힘으로는 이길 수 없는 적들이 너무나 많았습니다.
But God declared,
그러나 하나님은 말씀하십니다.
“I will fight this battle.”
“이 싸움은 내가 싸우겠다.”
The same is true in our lives.
우리의 인생도 그렇습니다.
There are battles we cannot win by our own strength.
우리에게는 우리의 힘만으로는 이길 수 없는 싸움이 있습니다.
There are battles against illness.
질병과의 싸움이 있습니다.
There are battles against financial hardship.
경제적인 어려움과의 싸움이 있습니다.
There are also conflicts in relationships and the temptation of sin.
관계의 갈등과 죄의 유혹도 있습니다.
Yet we keep trying to fight alone.
우리는 자꾸 혼자 싸우려고 합니다.
But even today, God says to us,
그러나 하나님은 오늘도 말씀하십니다.
“You are not fighting alone.”
“너 혼자 싸우는 것이 아니다.”
“I will fight for you.”
“내가 너를 위해 싸우겠다.”
Therefore, faith is not trusting in our own strength but trusting in the God who fights for us.
그래서 믿음은 내 힘을 의지하는 것이 아니라, 나를 위해 싸우시는 하나님을 신뢰하는 것입니다.
Then verse 16 continues with a wonderful promise.
그리고 16절은 놀라운 약속으로 이어집니다.
“On that day the LORD their God will save His people as the flock of His people. They will sparkle in His land like jewels in a crown.”
“그 날에 그들의 하나님 여호와께서 자기 백성을 양 떼 같이 구원하시리니 그들이 왕관의 보석 같이 여호와의 땅에 빛나리로다.”
God does not simply rescue us from danger and leave us there.
하나님은 우리를 단지 위험에서 건져 내시는 것으로 끝내지 않으십니다.
He says that He will make us as precious as the jewels in a royal crown.
우리를 왕관의 보석처럼 귀하게 하신다고 말씀하십니다.
A royal crown is adorned with its most precious jewels.
왕관은 가장 귀한 보석으로 장식됩니다.
Those jewels display the king's glory and honor.
그 보석은 왕의 영광과 존귀를 드러냅니다.
That is how God sees His people.
하나님께서는 자기 백성을 그렇게 바라보십니다.
Even the diamonds displayed in a jeweler's showcase did not shine as they do now from the very beginning.
우리는 보석상에 진열된 다이아몬드도 처음부터 지금처럼 빛나던 것은 아닙니다.
At first, they were covered with dirt, rough in appearance, and seemed no different from ordinary stones.
처음에는 흙이 묻어 있고 거칠며, 다른 돌들과 크게 다르지 않아 보입니다.
But the master jeweler recognizes the value hidden within.
그러나 보석 세공사는 그 안에 있는 가치를 압니다.
Therefore, he never throws away the rough stone.
그래서 원석을 버리지 않습니다.
Instead, he carefully cuts it, shapes it, and polishes it.
오히려 정성스럽게 깎고, 다듬고, 연마합니다.
For the rough stone, the process is painful and difficult.
원석에게는 아프고 힘든 과정입니다.
Yet every step of that process is not meant to discard it, but to make it shine with greater beauty.
하지만 그 모든 과정은 버리기 위한 것이 아니라 더 아름답게 빛나게 하기 위한 과정입니다.
The same is true for us.
우리도 그렇습니다.
From the very beginning, God has never regarded us as worthless.
하나님께서는 처음부터 우리를 가치 없는 존재로 보지 않으셨습니다.
He has always seen us as His precious people, purchased with the blood of Jesus Christ.
예수 그리스도의 피로 값을 주고 사신 귀한 백성으로 보셨습니다.
That is why He never gives up on us.
그래서 우리를 포기하지 않으십니다.
At times, our lives go through seasons of refining.
때로는 우리 삶에 연단이 있습니다.
We experience failure.
실패가 있습니다.
We go through long periods of waiting.
기다림이 있습니다.
There are also many tears.
눈물이 있습니다.
In those moments, we ask,
우리는 묻습니다.
“Lord, why are You still refining me?”
"왜 하나님은 아직도 나를 연단하십니까?"
“Why do You allow me to fail?”
"왜 실패를 허락하십니까?"
“Why am I still not complete?”
"왜 나는 아직도 완성되지 않았습니까?"
But God does not refine us in order to cast us away.
그러나 하나님은 우리를 버리기 위해 연단하시는 것이 아닙니다.
He refines us so that we may shine with greater beauty.
더 아름답게 빛나게 하시기 위해 다듬으시는 것입니다.
He prepares us so that He may use us more greatly.
더 크게 쓰시기 위해 준비시키시는 것입니다.
He polishes us so that our lives may display His glory more fully.
더 하나님의 영광을 드러내는 삶으로 세우시기 위해 연마하시는 것입니다.
Therefore, the trials we face today are not evidence that God has abandoned us.
그러므로 오늘 우리의 연단은 하나님의 버리심의 증거가 아니라,
They are evidence that we are still in His hands.
하나님의 손 안에 있다는 증거입니다.
At this point, I am reminded of one of Jesus' parables.
여기에서 저는 예수님의 한 비유가 떠오릅니다.
Jesus said,
예수님은 말씀하셨습니다.
“Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls…”
"또 천국은 마치 좋은 진주를 구하는 장사와 같으니..."
The parable of the hidden treasure teaches us the priceless value of the kingdom of heaven.
감추인 보화의 비유는 천국의 귀함을 보여 줍니다.
But this parable compares the kingdom not to the valuable pearl, but to the merchant searching for it.
그런데 이 비유는 천국을 값진 진주가 아니라 진주를 찾는 장사에 비유합니다.
The kingdom of heaven is the reign of God.
천국은 하나님의 통치입니다.
If that is true, then the merchant reveals the heart of God, who seeks His people.
그렇다면 이 장사는 자기 백성을 찾으시는 하나님의 마음을 보여 줍니다.
The merchant sells everything he owns in order to obtain one pearl of great value.
장사는 값진 진주 하나를 얻기 위해 자기의 소유를 다 팝니다.
Our Lord did the same for us.
우리 주님도 그러하셨습니다.
Jesus gave everything He had in order to gain us as His own.
예수님께서는 우리를 얻기 위해 자신의 모든 것을 내어 주셨습니다.
He did not purchase us with silver or gold, but with His own precious blood.
은이나 금이 아니라 자신의 보배로운 피를 내어 주셨습니다.
That is why the church is the people whom Christ purchased with His blood.
그래서 교회는 그리스도의 피 값으로 사신 백성입니다.
We were not saved by chance.
우리는 우연히 구원받은 사람들이 아닙니다.
We are the priceless pearl that God treasures above all.
하나님께서 가장 귀하게 여기시는 값진 진주입니다.
That is why God calls us the jewels in His crown.
그래서 하나님은 오늘 우리를 왕관의 보석이라고 말씀하십니다.
The world looks at our present condition.
세상은 우리의 현재 모습을 봅니다.
It sees our failures.
실패를 봅니다.
It sees our weaknesses.
연약함을 봅니다.
It sees our age.
나이를 봅니다.
But God does not see us that way.
그러나 하나님은 그렇지 않으십니다.
He sees us as His people, purchased with the blood of Christ.
그리스도의 피로 사신 백성으로 보십니다.
He sees us as precious and honored, like jewels in a royal crown.
왕관의 보석처럼 귀하고 존귀한 존재로 보십니다.
Verse 17 concludes by saying,

“How great is their goodness, and how great is their beauty!”

The salvation God accomplishes is far more than simply helping us survive.
하나님께서 이루시는 구원은 단순히 살아남는 것이 아닙니다.
It is a life that reflects the beauty of God.
하나님의 아름다움을 드러내는 삶입니다.
It is a life that displays His glory.
하나님의 영광을 나타내는 삶입니다.
Therefore, we no longer measure our worth by the standards of this world.

We are God's beloved children.
우리는 하나님의 사랑받는 자녀입니다.
We are the people purchased by the blood of Jesus Christ.
