Romans 로마서 4:13-25
As we go through life, there are times when the reality before our eyes seems greater than the promises of God.
살다 보면 하나님의 약속보다 눈앞의 현실이 더 크게 보일 때가 있습니다.
God has called us His children and made us heirs of His kingdom, yet reality often appears very different from that promise.
하나님께서 우리를 자녀로 부르시고 하나님 나라의 상속자로 삼으셨지만, 현실은 종종 그 약속과 다르게 보입니다.
Sometimes we wonder, “My own life is already difficult enough. How can I become a channel of blessing to others?”
내 삶도 버거운데 어떻게 복의 통로로 살 수 있을까 생각될 때가 있습니다.
In Romans 4, Paul introduces Abraham.
바울은 로마서 4장에서 아브라함을 소개합니다.
Abraham received the promise that he would become the father of many nations and that all peoples would be blessed through him.
아브라함은 많은 민족의 조상이 되고, 그를 통해 만민이 복을 받게 되리라는 약속을 받았습니다.
Yet as time passed, the reality seemed increasingly impossible.
그러나 시간이 흐를수록 현실은 점점 더 불가능해 보였습니다.
Nevertheless, Abraham trusted the God who made the promise more than he trusted his own circumstances.
그럼에도 아브라함은 자기 형편보다 약속하신 하나님을 더 신뢰했습니다.
He believed that if God had called him, God would accomplish it, and if God had promised it, God would take responsibility for it.
하나님께서 부르셨다면 이루실 것이고, 약속하셨다면 책임지실 것을 믿었습니다.
Through Abraham’s faith, Paul shows us today what kind of faith those whom God has made heirs should have.
바울은 이 아브라함의 믿음을 통해 오늘 우리에게 하나님이 상속자로 삼으신 사람은 어떤 믿음으로 살아야 하는지를 보여 줍니다.
Today, we will look at three things.
오늘 말씀을 통해 세 가지를 살펴보겠습니다.
First, hold fast to the promise given by grace.
첫째, 은혜로 주신 약속을 붙들라.
Second, trust God more than impossible circumstances.
둘째, 불가능한 현실보다 하나님을 신뢰하라.
Third, build your faith upon the cross and resurrection.
셋째, 십자가와 부활 위에 믿음을 세우라.
What does it mean that God has made us heirs?
그렇다면 하나님께서 우리를 상속자로 삼으셨다는 것은 무엇을 의미합니까?
How can we keep trusting and living by God's promise even when our circumstances seem to say otherwise?
그렇다면 현실이 하나님의 약속과 다르게 보일 때에도 우리는 어떻게 그 약속을 붙들고 살아가야 하겠습니까?
1. Hold Fast to the Promise Given by Grace. (13-17)
은혜로 주신 약속을 붙들라.
Paul says in this passage that Abraham and his offspring became heirs of the world not through the law but through the righteousness that comes by faith (v. 13).
본문에서 바울은 아브라함과 그의 자손이 세상의 상속자가 된 것은 율법으로 말미암은 것이 아니라 믿음의 의로 말미암은 것이라고 말합니다(13절).
The heir Paul speaks of here is not simply someone who receives blessings.
여기서 바울이 말하는 상속자는 단순히 복을 받는 사람이 아닙니다.
An heir is a person who belongs to the father’s household, who has received the father’s love, and who inherits the father’s heart and purpose.
상속자는 아버지의 집에 속한 사람이며, 아버지의 사랑을 받은 사람이고, 아버지의 뜻과 마음을 이어받는 사람입니다.
By contrast, a servant may work, but a servant cannot become an heir.
반대로 종은 일을 할 수는 있지만 상속자가 될 수는 없습니다.
A servant works out of obligation, but a son works in love.
종은 의무 때문에 일하지만, 아들은 사랑 안에서 일합니다.
A servant carries out commands, but a son understands his father’s heart and joyfully carries on his will.
종은 명령을 수행하지만, 아들은 아버지의 마음을 이해하며 그 뜻을 기쁨으로 이어갑니다.
This is also why Paul contrasts the law and faith.
바울이 율법과 믿음을 대조하는 이유도 여기에 있습니다.
If the kingdom of God were established through the law, we would have to live like servants.
만일 하나님의 나라가 율법으로 세워진다면 우리는 종처럼 살아야 할 것입니다.
We would live in fear of being punished when we fail and constantly try to prove ourselves worthy of acceptance.
잘못하면 벌을 받을까 두려워하고, 인정받기 위해 끊임없이 자신을 증명해야 할 것입니다.
But God did not call us to be servants. He called us His children.
그러나 하나님은 우리를 종으로 부르지 않으셨습니다. 자녀로 부르셨습니다.
Verses 14 and 15 say that if those who keep the law are heirs, then faith is meaningless and the promise is void.
14절과 15절은 만일 율법을 지키는 사람이 상속자가 된다면 믿음도 헛되고 약속도 무효가 된다고 말합니다.
This is because the law only exposes our shortcomings; it cannot make us heirs.
왜냐하면 율법은 우리의 부족함을 드러낼 뿐이지 우리를 상속자로 만들 수는 없기 때문입니다.
Therefore, verse 16 declares:
그래서 16절은 이렇게 선언합니다.
“Therefore, the promise comes by faith, so that it may be by grace.”
“그러므로 상속자가 되는 그것이 은혜에 속하기 위하여 믿음으로 되나니.”
God did not place the position of heir upon our merit. He placed it upon His grace.
하나님께서는 상속자의 자리를 우리의 공로 위에 두지 않으셨습니다. 하나님의 은혜 위에 두셨습니다.
It is by grace that we became God’s children, and it is by grace that we became heirs of His kingdom.
우리가 하나님의 자녀가 된 것도 은혜이고, 하나님 나라의 상속자가 된 것도 은혜입니다.
Therefore, when we serve God, we do not serve Him with the fear of servants.
그러므로 우리는 하나님을 섬길 때 종처럼 두려움으로 섬기는 사람들이 아닙니다.
We obey with joy as children who have received the love of God.
하나님의 사랑을 받은 자녀로서 기쁨으로 순종하는 사람들입니다.
The reason we dedicate ourselves to the kingdom of God is not to gain God’s approval. It is because we have already been loved.
우리가 하나님 나라를 위해 헌신하는 이유도 하나님께 인정받기 위해서가 아닙니다. 이미 사랑받았기 때문입니다.
The reason we serve is not to obtain salvation. It is because we have already been saved.
우리가 섬기는 이유도 구원을 얻기 위해서가 아닙니다. 이미 구원받았기 때문입니다.
The reason we obey is not to earn points with God. It is because we have come to know the heart of God.
우리가 순종하는 이유도 하나님께 점수를 따기 위해서가 아닙니다. 하나님의 마음을 알게 되었기 때문입니다.
This is the difference between a life under the law and a life of faith.
이것이 율법의 삶과 믿음의 삶의 차이입니다.
The same was true when God called Abraham.
하나님께서 아브라함을 부르신 것도 마찬가지였습니다.
Abraham was not called merely to be God’s servant, but to be God’s friend and a member of His covenant people.
아브라함은 하나님의 종으로만 부름받은 것이 아니라 하나님의 친구요 언약의 백성으로 부름받았습니다.
God called him in love and gave him His promise by grace.
하나님은 그를 사랑으로 부르셨고 은혜로 약속하셨습니다.
But when we look closely at the promise God gave to Abraham, it was not simply a promise to make one man prosper.
그런데 하나님께서 아브라함에게 주신 약속을 자세히 보면 단순히 한 사람을 잘되게 하시겠다는 약속이 아닙니다.
In Genesis 12, God said,
창세기 12장에서 하나님은 말씀하셨습니다.
“You will be a blessing.” “All peoples on earth will be blessed through you.”
“너는 복이 될지라.” “땅의 모든 족속이 너로 말미암아 복을 얻을 것이라.”
God blessed Abraham, but He did not intend for that blessing to stop with Abraham.
하나님은 아브라함에게 복을 주시되 그 복이 아브라함 안에서 멈추기를 원하지 않으셨습니다.
God desired that through Abraham, families would be blessed, nations would be blessed, and ultimately all peoples would be blessed.
하나님은 아브라함을 통해 가정이 복을 받고, 민족이 복을 받고, 마침내 온 세상이 복을 받게 하기를 원하셨습니다.
That is why in verse 17 God says that He made Abraham “the father of many nations.”
그래서 17절에서 하나님은 아브라함을 “많은 민족의 조상”으로 세우셨다고 말씀하십니다.
God was not looking only at Abraham as an individual. He was looking at the history of salvation that He would accomplish through him.
하나님은 아브라함 한 사람만 보고 계신 것이 아니었습니다. 그를 통해 이루실 하나님의 구원의 역사를 보고 계셨습니다.
Abraham was not called to keep God's blessings for himself. He was called to participate in God's plan of salvation.
아브라함은 하나님의 복을 독차지하도록 부름받은 사람이 아니라 하나님의 구원 계획에 참여하도록 부름받은 사람이었습니다.
Brothers and sisters, the same is true of God's calling us to be heirs.
성도 여러분, 하나님께서 우리를 상속자로 삼으신 것도 같은 의미입니다.
God did not call us merely to be people who receive blessings. He called us to be people who carry on His kingdom.
하나님은 우리를 단지 복을 받는 사람으로 부르지 않으셨습니다. 하나님의 나라를 이어갈 사람으로 부르셨습니다.
An heir is not merely someone who receives the father's possessions. An heir is someone who inherits the father's heart.
상속자는 아버지의 재산만 받는 사람이 아니라 아버지의 마음을 이어받는 사람입니다.
An heir of God's kingdom receives God's love, inherits God's purpose, and participates in God's mission.
하나님 나라의 상속자는 하나님의 사랑을 이어받고, 하나님의 뜻을 이어받고, 하나님의 사명에 참여하는 사람입니다.
When Jesus called His disciples, He did not say, “I will help you catch more fish.”
예수님께서 제자들을 부르실 때 “고기를 더 많이 잡게 하겠다”고 말씀하지 않으셨습니다.
Instead, He said, “I will make you fishers of men.”
“내가 너희로 사람을 낚는 어부가 되게 하리라.”
Because people were more important to the Lord than fish.
주님께는 고기보다 사람이 더 중요했기 때문입니다.
The world tells us to acquire more. But God tells us to love more.
세상은 더 많이 가지라고 말하지만 하나님은 더 많이 사랑하라고 말씀하십니다.
The world tells us to succeed. But God tells us to save and restore people.
세상은 성공하라고 말하지만 하나님은 사람을 살리라고 말씀하십니다.
This is also why God called us to be heirs.
하나님께서 우리를 상속자로 부르신 이유도 여기에 있습니다.
God wants someone to experience His love through us.
하나님은 우리를 통해 누군가가 사랑을 경험하기를 원하시고,
He wants someone to receive comfort through us.
누군가가 위로를 얻기를 원하시며,
He wants someone to return to God through us.
누군가가 하나님께 돌아오기를 원하십니다.
Therefore, holding on to God's promise does not simply mean expecting blessings for ourselves.
그러므로 하나님의 약속을 붙든다는 것은 단지 내가 받을 복을 기대하는 것이 아닙니다.
It means holding on to the grace that God has made us His children.
하나님께서 나를 자녀로 삼으셨다는 은혜를 붙드는 것입니다.
It means holding on to the truth that God has called us to be heirs of His kingdom.
하나님께서 나를 하나님 나라의 상속자로 부르셨다는 사실을 붙드는 것입니다.
And it means joyfully participating in the purpose and mission that God desires to accomplish through me.
그리고 하나님께서 나를 통해 이루고자 하시는 뜻과 사명에 기쁨으로 참여하는 것입니다.
Beloved congregation, hold fast to the promise God has given by grace.
사랑하는 성도 여러분, 하나님께서 은혜로 주신 약속을 붙드십시오.
Live not with the fear of a servant, but with the joy of a child.
종의 두려움이 아니라 자녀의 기쁨으로 살아가십시오.
May all of you live as heirs of God’s kingdom, carrying God’s heart, fulfilling God’s will, and letting God’s love flow into the world.
그리하여 하나님 나라의 상속자답게 하나님의 마음을 품고, 하나님의 뜻을 이루며, 하나님의 사랑을 세상 가운데 흘려보내는 여러분 모두가 되시기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.
2. Trust God More Than Impossible Circumstances. (18-22)
불가능한 현실보다 하나님을 신뢰하라.
God has called us by grace and made us heirs of His kingdom.
하나님께서는 우리를 은혜로 부르시고 하나님 나라의 상속자로 삼으셨습니다.
And He has promised that His love and blessing would flow through us.
그리고 우리를 통해 하나님의 사랑과 복이 흘러가게 하시겠다고 약속하셨습니다.
But the problem is that the path of living according to God’s calling is not always easy.
그런데 문제는 하나님의 부르심을 따라 살아가는 길이 언제나 쉽지만은 않다는 것입니다.
We want to live as heirs of God’s kingdom and be used as channels of blessing, but reality is often harder than we expect.
하나님 나라의 상속자로 살아가고 싶고, 복의 통로로 쓰임 받고 싶지만 현실은 생각보다 녹록지 않습니다.
There are immediate financial concerns that must be resolved.
당장 해결해야 할 생계의 문제가 있습니다.
There are health problems.
건강의 문제가 있습니다.
There are issues with children and family.
자녀와 가정의 문제가 있습니다.
There are also worries about the future.
미래에 대한 염려도 있습니다.
And sometimes, the more we try to love and serve others, the more we get hurt.
또 때로는 사람을 사랑하고 섬기려 할수록 상처를 받기도 하고,
And the more we try to live according to God’s will, the more it feels as though we are being asked to make greater sacrifices.
하나님의 뜻대로 살려고 할수록 더 많은 희생을 요구받는 것처럼 느껴질 때도 있습니다.
So at some point, we begin to see our reality as greater than God’s promise.
그래서 우리는 어느 순간 하나님의 약속보다 현실을 더 크게 바라보게 됩니다.
“How can I serve others when I can barely solve my own problems?”
"지금 내 문제도 해결하기 어려운데 어떻게 다른 사람을 섬길 수 있을까?"
“How can I be a channel of blessing when my own life feels overwhelming?”
"내 삶도 벅찬데 어떻게 복의 통로가 될 수 있을까?"
“Is God really using me?”
"정말 하나님께서 나를 사용하고 계신 것이 맞을까?"
Abraham also stood before a similar reality.
아브라함도 비슷한 현실 앞에 서 있었습니다.
God had made him the father of many nations and promised that all nations would be blessed through him.
하나님께서는 그를 많은 민족의 조상으로 세우시고, 그를 통해 모든 민족이 복을 받게 하시겠다고 약속하셨습니다.
But the reality seemed completely opposite to God’s promise.
그러나 현실은 하나님의 약속과 정반대로 보였습니다.
As the years passed, Abraham grew older, and from a human point of view, the possibility kept disappearing.
세월이 흐를수록 아브라함의 나이는 더해졌고 사람의 눈으로 볼 때 가능성은 점점 사라져 갔습니다.
Looking at Abraham, who was one hundred years old, and Sarah, who was ninety years old, everyone must have said,
백세가 된 아브라함과 아흔 살이 된 사라를 바라보며 사람들은 모두 말했을 것입니다.
“It is too late now.”
"이제는 늦었습니다."
“It is impossible now.”
"이제는 불가능합니다."
“Giving up is the realistic thing to do.”
"포기하는 것이 현실적입니다."
But Paul says that Abraham hoped and believed against all hope (v. 18).
그런데 바울은 아브라함이 바랄 수 없는 중에 바라고 믿었다고 말합니다(18절).
The important thing here is that Abraham did not ignore reality.
여기서 중요한 것은 아브라함이 현실을 외면했다는 것이 아닙니다.
He knew very well that his own body was as good as dead and that Sarah’s womb was also as good as dead.
그는 자신의 몸이 죽은 것 같고 사라의 태가 죽은 것 같음을 잘 알고 있었습니다.
He did not deny the situation, nor did he ignore the problem.
그는 상황을 부정하지 않았고 문제를 외면하지도 않았습니다.
However, he did not make reality his final standard of judgment.
그러나 그는 현실을 마지막 판단 기준으로 삼지 않았습니다.
Because he believed that God was greater than reality.
왜냐하면 현실보다 하나님이 더 크시다는 사실을 믿었기 때문입니다.
What Abraham believed was not simply that he would have a son.
아브라함이 믿은 것은 단순히 아들이 생길 것이라는 사실이 아니었습니다.
He believed God’s plan that God had called him and had said He would accomplish through him.
그는 하나님께서 자신을 부르셨고, 자신을 통해 이루시겠다고 말씀하신 하나님의 계획을 믿었습니다.
If God had said that He would use him as a channel of blessing, Abraham believed that God would surely fulfill that promise as well.
하나님께서 자신을 복의 통로로 사용하시겠다고 하셨다면, 그 약속도 반드시 이루실 것이라고 믿었습니다.
Therefore, his faith was not merely faith for the fulfillment of a personal desire.
그래서 그의 믿음은 단순히 개인적인 소원을 이루기 위한 믿음이 아니라
It was faith that trusted God’s calling and God’s plan.
하나님의 부르심과 하나님의 계획을 신뢰하는 믿음이었습니다.
Verse 17 says that Abraham believed God as the One “who gives life to the dead and calls into being things that were not.”
17절은 아브라함이 하나님을 "죽은 자를 살리시며 없는 것을 있는 것으로 부르시는 이"로 믿었다고 말합니다.
Abraham did not trust in his own ability.
아브라함은 자신의 능력을 믿은 것이 아닙니다.
Neither did he trust in a change of circumstances.
상황의 변화를 믿은 것도 아닙니다.
He trusted God.
그는 하나님을 믿었습니다.
He believed that if God had spoken, He would accomplish it.
하나님께서 말씀하셨다면 이루실 것이고,
If God had called him, He would take responsibility for it.
하나님께서 부르셨다면 책임지실 것이며,
And if God had begun it, He would complete it.
하나님께서 시작하셨다면 완성하실 것을 믿었습니다.
Brothers and sisters, the same is true for us.
성도 여러분, 우리도 마찬가지입니다.
God has called us to be channels of blessing, yet reality is still difficult.
하나님께서 우리를 복의 통로로 부르셨지만 현실은 여전히 어렵습니다.
It is not easy to love people.
사람을 사랑하는 일이 쉽지 않습니다.
It is not easy to forgive.
용서하는 일이 쉽지 않습니다.
It is not easy to serve.
섬기는 일이 쉽지 않습니다.
Even sharing the gospel is not easy.
복음을 전하는 일도 쉽지 않습니다.
At times, even our own lives feel overwhelming.
때로는 내 삶조차 버겁게 느껴질 때가 있습니다.
But God does not tell us to obey only after we have perfect conditions.
그러나 하나님은 우리에게 완벽한 조건을 갖춘 후 순종하라고 말씀하지 않으십니다.
He first calls us.
먼저 우리를 부르시고,
He first gives His promise.
먼저 약속하시고,
He first pours out His grace.
먼저 은혜를 베푸신 후
Then He tells us to follow Him by faith.
믿음으로 따라오라고 말씀하십니다.
Therefore, faith is not confidence that says, “I can do it.”
그래서 믿음은 "내가 할 수 있다"는 자신감이 아닙니다.
Faith is trust that says, “God can do it.”
믿음은 "하나님께서 하실 수 있다"는 신뢰입니다.
Faith is not looking at our own ability.
믿음은 내 능력을 바라보는 것이 아니라
It is looking at the faithfulness of God.
하나님의 신실하심을 바라보는 것입니다.
Verses 20 and 21 say that Abraham did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and was fully persuaded that God had power to do what He had promised.
20절과 21절은 아브라함이 하나님의 약속을 의심하지 않고 믿음으로 견고하여졌으며, 하나님께서 약속하신 것을 능히 이루실 줄을 확신하였다고 말합니다.
Abraham did not believe because he fully understood God’s methods.
아브라함은 하나님의 방법을 다 이해했기 때문에 믿은 것이 아닙니다.
He believed because he knew who God is.
하나님이 어떤 분이신지를 알았기에 믿었습니다.
Brothers and sisters, do the problems of reality seem greater to you than the mission God has entrusted to you?
성도 여러분, 혹시 지금 하나님께서 맡기신 사명보다 현실의 문제가 더 크게 보입니까?
Do your present circumstances seem greater than God’s promise?
혹시 하나님의 약속보다 현재의 형편이 더 크게 보입니까?
Even today, God says,
하나님은 오늘도 말씀하십니다.
“Do not give up.”
"포기하지 말아라."
“I am still at work.”
"나는 지금도 일하고 있다."
“The purpose for which I called you has not changed.”
"내가 너를 부른 목적은 변하지 않았다."
“My promise is still valid.”
"내 약속은 지금도 유효하다."
Therefore, look to God more than to your circumstances.
그러므로 현실보다 하나님을 크게 바라보십시오.
Hold on to God’s promise more than to your problems.
문제보다 하나님의 약속을 붙드십시오.
Trust God’s faithfulness more than your own weaknesses.
자신의 부족함보다 하나님의 신실하심을 신뢰하십시오.
The God who promised to make you a channel of blessing is still alive today.
복의 통로가 되게 하시겠다고 약속하신 하나님은 오늘도 살아 계십니다.
And that God is still building His kingdom through us.
그리고 그 하나님은 지금도 우리를 통해 하나님의 나라를 이루어 가고 계십니다.
Beloved brothers and sisters, do not give up on God’s calling.
사랑하는 성도 여러분, 하나님의 부르심을 포기하지 말고,
Hold on to God’s promise and live as heirs of God’s kingdom.
하나님의 약속을 붙들며, 하나님 나라의 상속자답게 살아가십시오.
May you experience the grace of being used by God as blessed channels through whom His love and grace flow to many people.
그리하여 하나님께서 여러분의 삶을 통해 많은 사람들에게 사랑과 은혜를 흘려보내시는 복된 통로로 사용하시는 은혜를 누리시기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.
3. Build Your Faith upon the Cross and Resurrection. (23-25)
십자가와 부활 위에 믿음을 세우라.
Paul does not leave Abraham’s story as merely an example of faith from the past.
바울은 아브라함의 이야기를 과거의 믿음 이야기로만 남겨 두지 않습니다.
In verses 23 and 24, Paul says that the words “it was credited to him” were written not only for Abraham, but also for us.
23절과 24절에서 바울은 “그에게 의로 여겨졌다”는 말씀이 아브라함만을 위해 기록된 것이 아니라 우리를 위해서도 기록되었다고 말합니다.
In other words, Abraham’s faith points us to the faith that we must have today.
즉 아브라함의 믿음은 오늘 우리가 붙들어야 할 믿음으로 이어집니다.
As we have seen, God has called us by grace and made us heirs of His kingdom.
우리가 살펴본 것처럼 하나님은 우리를 은혜로 부르시고 하나님 나라의 상속자로 삼으셨습니다.
He has called us to be channels through whom His love and blessing flow to others.
그리고 우리를 통해 하나님의 사랑과 복이 흘러가게 하셨습니다.
But living according to that calling is not always easy.
그러나 그 부르심을 따라 살아가는 길은 결코 쉽지 않습니다.
Loving people is not easy.
사람을 사랑하는 일은 쉽지 않습니다.
Forgiving those who hurt us is not easy.
나에게 상처를 준 사람을 용서하는 일도 쉽지 않습니다.
Serving others often requires sacrifice.
다른 사람을 섬기는 일에는 희생이 따릅니다.
Sharing the gospel can bring rejection and disappointment.
복음을 전하는 일은 거절과 낙심을 경험하게 하기도 합니다.
Sometimes we wonder whether our labor is accomplishing anything at all.
때로는 우리의 수고가 과연 의미가 있는지 의문이 들 때도 있습니다.
Sometimes reality appears greater than God's promise.
때로는 하나님의 약속보다 현실이 더 크게 보일 때도 있습니다.
At those moments, where can we find the strength to continue?
그럴 때 우리는 어디에서 다시 살아갈 힘을 얻을 수 있겠습니까?
Paul points us to the God whom Abraham believed.
바울은 우리를 아브라함이 믿었던 하나님께로 인도합니다.
Abraham believed in the God who gives life to the dead and calls things that are not as though they were.
아브라함은 죽은 자를 살리시며 없는 것을 있는 것으로 부르시는 하나님을 믿었습니다.
And Paul declares that this same God raised Jesus Christ from the dead.
그리고 바울은 바로 그 하나님께서 예수 그리스도를 죽은 자 가운데서 살리셨다고 선포합니다.
Verse 25 summarizes the heart of the gospel: Jesus was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification.
