Tempted While Led by the Spirit
마태복음 Matthew 4:1–11
예수님은 성령에 이끌려 광야로 가셔서 시험을 받으셨습니다.
Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness and was tempted.
성령께서는 예수님의 말씀이 순종으로 드러나게 하시고, 시험을 이기심으로 구원의 길을 온전히 이루시도록 그 시험의 자리로 이끄셨습니다.
The Holy Spirit led Jesus into the place of testing so that His obedience to God’s Word would be revealed, and so that He would accomplish the way of salvation by overcoming temptation.
여기서 광야는 삶이 흔들릴 때, 내가 무엇을 의지해 살아왔는지가 드러나는 자리를 말합니다.
Here, the wilderness refers to the place where, when life shakes, what we truly rely on is revealed.
예수님은 세 가지 시험을 받으십니다. 그리고 그 시험은 우리에게 중요한 교훈을 줍니다.
Jesus faced three temptations, and His temptations teach us vital lessons.
떡의 시험 앞에서 우리는 육의 양식과 더불어 영의 양식이 필요함을 배우고,
In the temptation of bread, we learn that we need spiritual nourishment as well as physical bread,
성전 꼭대기의 시험 앞에서 우리는 만용이 아니라 순종이 필요함을 배우며,
In the temptation at the temple, we learn that we need obedience, not reckless presumption,
높은 산의 시험 앞에서 우리는 땅의 영광이 아니라 하늘의 영광을 구해야 함을 배웁니다.
And in the temptation on the high mountain, we learn to seek heavenly glory rather than earthly glory.
그렇다면 오늘, 우리의 광야에서 우리는 무엇을 붙들고 서야 하겠습니까?
So today, in our own wilderness, what must we hold onto in order to stand?
1. 우리는 육의 양식과 더불어 영의 양식이 필요합니다.(1-4)
We need spiritual nourishment as well as physical bread.
본문은 이렇게 시작합니다. “그때에 예수께서 성령에게 이끌리어 마귀에게 시험을 받으러 광야로 가셨습니다.”
The passage begins like this: “Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.”
예수님은 우연히 광야에 들어가신 것이 아닙니다. 시험은 마귀가 가져왔지만, 그 길을 이끄신 분은 성령이셨습니다.
Jesus did not enter the wilderness by accident. The temptation came from the devil, but the One who led the way was the Holy Spirit.
그래서 우리는 배웁니다. 시험이 온다고 해서 하나님이 떠나신 것이 아닙니다.
So we learn this: when trials come, it does not mean God has left.
우리의 삶도 그렇습니다. 일이 막히고, 건강이 흔들리고, 관계가 어려워질 때 우리는 “하나님이 멀어진 것 아닌가” 생각합니다.
So it is with our lives. When work stalls, health weakens, or relationships become strained, we may think, “Has God grown distant?”
그러나 때로 그 광야는 성령께서 지나가게 하시는 길일 수 있습니다. 광야는 버림의 자리가 아니라, 우리가 무엇을 의지해 사는지 드러나는 자리입니다.
Yet at times, that wilderness may be a path the Holy Spirit is leading us through. The wilderness is not abandonment, but the place where what we truly rely on is revealed.
예수님은 사십 일을 밤낮으로 금식하신 후에 주리셨습니다. 그 배고픔은 실제였습니다.
After fasting forty days and nights, Jesus was hungry. His hunger was real.
이 시험은 상징이 아니라 현실이었고, 육신이 가장 약해진 순간에 찾아왔습니다.
This test was not symbolic but real, and it came at His weakest physical moment.
바로 그때 시험하는 자가 말합니다. “네가 만일 하나님의 아들이어든 이 돌들로 떡덩이가 되게 하라.”
At that very moment, the tempter spoke: “If You are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.”
이 말은 단지 빵을 만들라는 제안이 아닙니다. 배고픔을 핑계로 하나님을 신뢰하며 기다리기보다, 내가 당장 할 수 있는 방법을 먼저 택하라는 유혹입니다.
This was not merely a suggestion to make bread. It was a temptation to choose what we can do immediately rather than trust God and wait in His way.
동시에 “네가 정말 하나님의 아들이 맞느냐”라고 정체성을 흔드는 도전이기도 합니다.
At the same time, it was a challenge that shook His identity: “Are You really the Son of God?”
우리의 삶도 비슷합니다. 문제가 급해질수록 우리는 기도보다 계산을 먼저 하고, 말씀에 순종하며 기다리기보다 당장 효과가 보이는 길을 붙들려 합니다.
So it is in our lives. The more urgent the problem feels, the more we calculate before we pray, and cling to what shows immediate results rather than wait in obedience to God’s Word.
우리는 먹고 살아야 합니다. 돈과 건강과 안정이 필요합니다. 그러나 시험은 바로 그 필요를 붙잡고 우리를 흔듭니다.
We must eat and survive. We need money, health, and stability. Yet temptation grips those very needs and shakes us.
믿고 기다리기보다 먼저 해결책을 찾으라고 말합니다. 상황이 급하니 말씀보다 현실을 붙들라고 속삭입니다.
It tells us to find a solution first rather than trust and wait. It whispers that in urgent times, what we see matters more than the Word.
그 말들이 우리의 마음을 흔듭니다.
Those voices shake our hearts.
그렇다면 그 흔들림의 자리에서 우리는 무엇을 붙들어야 하겠습니까? 예수님은 그 순간에 무엇으로 서셨습니까?
So in that moment of shaking, what should we hold onto? What did Jesus hold onto?
예수님은 이렇게 대답하십니다. “사람이 떡으로만 살 것이 아니요 하나님의 입으로부터 나오는 모든 말씀으로 살 것이라.”
Jesus answered, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.”
예수님은 돌을 떡으로 바꾸지 않으셨습니다. 자신의 능력으로 상황을 먼저 해결하지 않으셨습니다.
Jesus did not turn stones into bread. He did not choose to fix the situation first by His own power.
예수님이 붙드신 것은 배고픔을 덮는 방법이 아니라, 우리를 살게 하는 말씀이었습니다.
What He held onto was not a quick way to cover His hunger, but the Word that gives us life.
왜냐하면 우리는 떡으로만 사는 존재가 아니라, 하나님의 입에서 나오는 말씀으로 사는 존재이기 때문입니다.
Because we do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.
하나님은 우리에게 말씀하십니다. “나는 네가 무엇이 필요한지 안다. 나는 네 배고픔을 안다. 광야는 네가 버림받았다는 증거가 아니다, 왜냐하면 나는 지금도 너를 붙들고 있기 때문이다.”
God says to us, “I know what you need. I know your hunger. The wilderness is not proof that you are abandoned, because I am still holding you.”
“네가 약해진 순간에도 너는 여전히 내 자녀이니, 떡을 먼저 붙들지 말고 말씀을 먼저 붙들어라. 환경이 아니라 나를 신뢰하라. 불안에 끌려가지 말고 말씀 위에 서라.”
“Even in your weakness, you are still My child; therefore, do not grasp bread first, but hold onto My Word first. Trust Me, not your circumstances. Do not be led by anxiety; stand on My Word.”
우리는 배가 불러도 공허할 때가 있습니다. 왜냐하면 우리는 떡으로만 사는 존재가 아니기 때문입니다.
There are times when we feel empty even when we are full, because we do not live by bread alone.
우리의 영혼은 하나님의 말씀으로 살아갑니다.
Our souls live by the Word of God.
그러므로 이 첫 시험은 우리에게 묻습니다. “너는 무엇으로 사느냐?”
Therefore, this first temptation asks us, “What do you live by?”
우리는 육의 양식과 더불어 영의 양식이 필요합니다.
We need spiritual nourishment as well as physical bread.
광야에서 예수님은 배고픔보다 말씀을 붙드셨습니다. 그것이 승리였습니다.
In the wilderness, Jesus held onto the Word more than His hunger. That was the victory.
오늘 우리도 그 길로 부름받았습니다.
Today, we are called to the same path.
“내가 너희에게 이른 말은 영이요 생명이라”(요한복음 6:63)라는 말씀처럼, 하나님은 이렇게 말씀하십니다. “말씀으로 살라, 내가 너를 붙들겠다.”
As it is written, “‘The words I have spoken to you—they are full of the Spirit and life’” (John 6:63), God says to us, “Live by My Word, and I will hold you.”
2. 우리는 만용이 아니라 순종이 필요합니다.(5-7)
We need obedience, not reckless presumption.
마귀는 예수님을 거룩한 성으로 데려가 성전 꼭대기에 세웠습니다. 그리고 말합니다. “네가 만일 하나님의 아들이어든 뛰어내리라.”
The devil took Jesus to the holy city and set Him on the highest point of the temple. Then he said, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down.”
이번에는 사탄도 말씀을 인용합니다. “그가 너를 위하여 그의 사자들을 명하시리니.” 겉으로 들으면 믿음의 말처럼 보입니다.
This time, Satan even quoted Scripture: “He will command His angels concerning You.” On the surface, it sounds like faith.
그러나 이것은 믿음이 아니었습니다. 하나님을 시험하여, 정말 나를 지키시는지 증명해 보라는 유혹이었습니다. 믿음을 가장한 만용이었습니다.
But this was not faith. It was a temptation to test God and demand proof of His protection. It was recklessness disguised as faith.
이 시험은 광야에서 이미 한 번 일어났습니다. 출애굽한 이스라엘은 길이 막힌 광야에서 물이 끊기자, 목마름과 두려움이 분노로 바뀌었습니다.
This testing had already happened in the wilderness. After the exodus, Israel found themselves in the wilderness with no water, and thirst and fear turned into anger.
그들은 모세에게 따지고 원망하며, “우리를 여기서 죽이려고 데려왔느냐”라고까지 말했습니다.
They quarreled with Moses, complained, and even said, “Did you bring us out here to make us die?”
그리고 마침내 이렇게 외쳤습니다. “여호와께서 우리 중에 계신가 아닌가.” 그들은 하나님을 신뢰하기보다 하나님을 시험했습니다.
Then they cried out, “Is the Lord among us or not?” Instead of trusting, they tested God.
우리의 삶 속에서도 이런 시험은 반복됩니다. 기도가 당장 응답되지 않고, 하나님이 침묵하시는 것처럼 느껴질 때입니다.
This kind of temptation repeats in our lives when prayers are not answered and God seems silent.
그때 우리는 마음속으로 묻습니다. “정말 나를 사랑하시면 보여 주세요.” “지금 증명해 주세요.”
We may say in our hearts, “If You truly love me, show me.” “Prove it now.”
그때 하나님은 우리를 꾸짖기 전에 먼저 부드럽게 붙드십니다. 그리고 말씀하십니다. “내가 여기 있다. 너는 혼자가 아니다. 너의 눈에 보이지 않아도 나는 너를 떠난 적이 없다.”
Then God holds us gently before He corrects us and says, “I am here. You are not alone. Even when you cannot see it, I have not left you.”
하지만 우리의 마음이 급해지면, 그 음성을 기다리기보다 스스로 결론을 내리려 합니다.
But when our hearts grow anxious, we tend to draw our own conclusions instead of waiting for His voice.
그래서 우리는 믿음의 이름으로 무리한 선택을 정당화하기도 합니다.
So we sometimes justify reckless choices in the name of faith.
베드로가 물 위를 걷다가 바람을 보고 두려워 빠진 것처럼, 우리는 상황을 보는 순간 흔들립니다.
Like Peter who walked on water but sank when he saw the wind, we falter the moment we focus on circumstances.
주님을 바라보기보다 환경을 바라볼 때 시험에 빠집니다.
When we look at the storm instead of the Lord, we fall into temptation.
그때 주님은 우리에게도 베드로에게 하셨던 것처럼 손을 내미십니다. “두려워하지 말라. 내 손을 붙들어라. 나를 바라보아라.”
Then the Lord reaches out to us as He did to Peter and says, “Do not be afraid. Take My hand. Keep your eyes on Me.”
그러나 예수님은 말씀으로 대답하셨습니다. “또 기록되었으되 주 너의 하나님을 시험하지 말라.” 예수님은 성전 꼭대기에서 뛰어내리지 않으셨습니다. 그 조용한 순종이 승리였습니다.
But Jesus answered with Scripture: “It is also written: Do not put the Lord your God to the test.” He did not jump. That quiet obedience was the victory.
바로 그때 하나님은 우리에게 이렇게 말씀하십니다. “서두르지 말아라. 네가 증명해 내지 않아도 된다. 한 걸음씩 나와 함께 걸어라. 내가 너를 책임지겠다.”
And at that moment God says to us, “Do not rush. You do not need to prove anything. Walk with Me one step at a time. I will take responsibility for you.”
그리고 이 시험은 십자가에서도 다시 나타났습니다. 사람들은 조롱했습니다. “네가 하나님의 아들이거든 십자가에서 내려오라.” 그러나 예수님은 내려오지 않으셨습니다.
The same temptation appeared again at the cross. The people mocked Him, saying, “If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross.” But Jesus did not come down.
예수님은 이미 하나님의 아들이셨기에 증명할 필요가 없으셨습니다. 과시하지 않으셨고, 조용히 끝까지 순종하셨습니다. 그 신뢰가 우리를 구원했습니다.
Because He was already the Son of God, He had no need to prove Himself. He did not display His power but obeyed to the end. That trust brought our salvation.
그러므로 하나님은 십자가를 통해 우리에게 분명히 말씀하십니다. “나는 너를 사랑한다. 이것이 내 사랑의 증거다. 너는 흔들려도 나는 너를 놓지 않는다.”
Therefore, through the cross, God speaks clearly to us: “I love you. This is the proof of My love. Even when you waver, I will not let you go.”
하나님은 우리에게도 말씀하십니다. “너는 나를 시험하지 않아도 된다. 나는 이미 너를 사랑하고 있다.” 믿음은 하나님을 조종하는 것이 아니라, 아버지를 신뢰하며 함께 걷는 것입니다.
God says to us, “You do not need to test Me. I already love you.” Faith is not manipulating God, but walking with the Father in trust.
그리고 하나님은 이렇게 부르십니다. “너의 불안과 조급함을 내게 맡겨라. 내 때를 신뢰하라. 오늘 너에게 필요한 은혜를 내가 주겠다.”
And God calls to us, “Entrust your anxiety and hurry to Me. Trust My timing. I will give you the grace you need today.”
하나님을 시험하는 삶은 불안에서 나오지만, 하나님을 신뢰하는 삶은 관계에서 나옵니다. 만용은 결과를 재촉하지만, 순종은 아버지를 신뢰하며 기다립니다.
A life that tests God comes from anxiety, but a life that trusts God comes from relationship. Recklessness rushes for results, but obedience waits in trust.
주님의 승리는 단지 그날의 승리가 아니라, 오늘 우리가 걸어갈 길이 되었습니다.
The Lord’s victory is not only His victory that day, but the path we are called to walk today.
우리도 하나님의 자녀입니다. 그러므로 우리는 만용이 아니라 순종을 선택해야 합니다. 오늘도 하나님은 말씀하십니다. “나를 시험하지 말고 나를 신뢰하라. 나는 너를 붙들고 있다.”
We too are children of God. Therefore, we must choose obedience, not reckless presumption. Even today God says, “Do not test Me—trust Me. I am holding you.”
3. 우리는 ‘세상의 모든 나라와 그 영광’이 아니라 하나님의 나라가 필요합니다 (8–11)
We need the kingdom of God, not “all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor.”
마귀는 다시 예수님을 지극히 높은 산으로 데리고 올라가 세상의 모든 나라와 그 영광을 보여 주었습니다.
Again, the devil took Jesus to a very high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor.
그것은 단순한 풍경이 아니라, 통치권과 권세, 사람들이 갈망하는 성공과 영향력을 한눈에 펼쳐 보인 장면이었습니다.
It was not merely a view, but a display of dominion, authority, and the kind of success and influence people long for.
그리고 마귀는 말합니다. “네가 내게 엎드려 경배하면, 이 모든 것을 너에게 주겠다.”
Then the devil said, “If you bow down and worship me, I will give you all this.”
이것은 단순한 제안이 아니었습니다. 무엇을 얻느냐의 문제가 아니라, 누구 앞에 무릎을 꿇느냐의 문제였습니다.
This was not merely an offer. The issue was not what to gain, but before whom to bow.
세상의 모든 나라와 그 영광은 결국 하나님보다 그것을 더 사랑하게 만들려 합니다.
All the kingdoms of the world and their splendor ultimately tempt us to love them more than God.
눈에 보이는 성취와 인정이 우리의 마음을 끌어당기고, 어느 순간 하나님보다 결과를 더 붙들게 만듭니다.
Visible achievement and approval pull at our hearts until we cling to results more than to Him.
십자가는 하나님께 끝까지 순종하며 손해를 감수하고 기다림을 선택하는 길입니다.
The cross is the path of faithful obedience to God—embracing cost and choosing to wait in trust.
세상의 나라는 그 길을 피하라고 속삭입니다. “그렇게까지 할 필요는 없다. 원칙을 잠시 내려놓아도 된다. 지금 당장 영광을 얻을 수 있다.”
The world whispers for us to avoid that path: “You don’t have to go that far. Set aside your convictions for a moment. You can have glory now.”
그러나 예수님은 십자가를 건너뛰지 않으셨습니다. 그래서 그분의 선택은 단순한 도덕적 결단이 아니라, 하나님의 나라를 지키는 결정이었습니다.
But Jesus did not bypass the cross. His choice was not merely moral resolve, but the preservation of God’s kingdom.
그분은 ‘빠른 영광’이 아니라 아버지의 뜻에 대한 순종으로 하나님의 통치를 드러내셨습니다.
He revealed God’s reign not through quick glory, but through obedience to the Father’s will.
히브리서는 이런 선택 앞에 섰던 믿음의 사람들을 보여 줍니다. 모세는 바로의 궁전에서 자라며 세상의 영광을 누릴 수 있었습니다.
Hebrews shows us people of faith who faced similar choices. Moses grew up in Pharaoh’s palace and could enjoy earthly glory.
그러나 그는 잠시 누리는 죄의 즐거움을 거절했습니다. 그는 애굽의 보화보다 하나님과 함께 겪는 수모를 더 큰 재물로 여겼습니다.
Yet he refused the fleeting pleasures of sin. He valued suffering with God’s people over Egypt’s treasures.
그는 보이는 왕궁보다 보이지 않는 상을 바라보았습니다. 아브라함도 익숙한 땅을 떠나 하나님이 지으실 도성을 바라보며 살았습니다.
He looked beyond the visible palace to an unseen reward. Abraham also left familiar land and lived looking toward the city built by God.
그들은 세상의 나라가 아니라 하나님의 나라를 더 실제적인 것으로 여겼습니다.
They regarded God’s kingdom as more real than the kingdoms of this world.
오늘 우리의 삶에도 같은 시험이 찾아옵니다. 조금만 타협하면 더 빨리 올라갈 수 있을 것처럼 보입니다. 신앙을 잠시 미루면 더 편해질 것처럼 느껴집니다.
The same temptation comes into our lives today. Compromise seems to promise quicker advancement. Setting faith aside appears easier.
그때 하나님은 우리를 꾸짖기보다 먼저 말씀하십니다. “너는 남의 박수로 살아가는 사람이 아니다. 나는 네 왕이다. 서두르지 말고, 오늘도 내 나라를 먼저 선택해라.”
In those moments, God does not first rebuke us; He speaks. “You were not made to live on applause. I am your King. Do not rush. Choose My kingdom today.”
세상의 나라는 우리를 밤에도 쉬지 못하게 합니다. 성과와 인정이 마음을 몰아붙이고, 비교 속에서 숨이 가빠집니다.
The world’s kingdom robs us of rest. Results and recognition push our hearts, and comparison steals our breath.
그러나 하나님의 나라는 우리를 다시 숨 쉬게 합니다. “너는 내 자녀다”라는 한마디가 우리의 중심을 제자리로 돌려 놓습니다.
But God’s kingdom lets us breathe again. One word—“You are My child”—returns our hearts to their place.
세상의 나라는 우리를 사용합니다. 그러나 하나님의 나라는 우리를 살립니다.
The world’s kingdom uses us. But God’s kingdom gives us life.
세상의 나라는 결과를 요구하지만, 하나님의 나라는 관계를 회복시킵니다.
The world demands results, but God restores relationship.
본문은 마지막을 이렇게 기록합니다. 예수님이 말씀하시자 마귀는 떠났습니다. 그리고 천사들이 나아와 예수님을 섬겼습니다.
The passage ends by telling us that when Jesus spoke, the devil left. Then angels came and attended Him.
시험은 영원하지 않았습니다. 순종 뒤에는 하나님의 돌보심이 있었습니다.
The testing was not eternal. After obedience came God’s care.
그러므로 우리는 ‘세상의 모든 나라와 그 영광’이 아니라 하나님의 나라가 필요합니다. 하나님께만 무릎 꿇을 때 우리는 가장 자유로워지고 가장 안전해집니다.
Therefore, we need not all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor, but the kingdom of God. When we bow to Him alone, we become truly free and secure.
그리고 그 나라 안에서 하나님은 끝까지 우리를 책임지십니다.
And within His kingdom, He will carry us to the end.
이제 결론으로 들어가겠습니다. 우리의 광야는 우리를 무너뜨리기 위한 자리가 아니라, 우리가 무엇으로 사는지, 누구를 신뢰하는지, 누구의 나라에 속해 있는지가 드러나는 자리입니다.
Now we come to the conclusion. Our wilderness is not meant to destroy us, but to reveal what we live by, whom we trust, and which kingdom we truly belong to.
첫째, 우리는 떡만이 아니라 하나님의 말씀으로 삽니다. 눈앞의 급함이 커질수록 더 먼저 붙들어야 할 것은 ‘빵’이 아니라 ‘말씀’입니다.
First, we do not live by bread alone, but by the Word of God. The more urgent life feels, the more we must grasp the Word before we grasp quick solutions.
둘째, 우리는 하나님을 시험하는 만용이 아니라, 말씀에 머무는 순종으로 섭니다. 증명하려는 마음을 내려놓고, 조용히 주님의 손을 붙드는 것이 믿음입니다.
Second, we stand not by reckless presumption that tests God, but by obedience that rests in His Word. Faith is not demanding proof, but quietly taking the Lord’s hand.
셋째, 우리는 ‘세상의 모든 나라와 그 영광’이 아니라 하나님의 나라를 선택해야 합니다. 사람의 박수에 흔들리지 말고, 하나님을 왕으로 모시며 그 나라를 먼저 구해야 합니다.
Third, we must choose the kingdom of God, not all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. We do not live by applause, but by honoring God as King and seeking His kingdom first.
오늘 우리의 광야에서 주님처럼 말씀으로 서고, 순종으로 걷고, 하나님의 나라를 선택합시다. 시험은 영원하지 않습니다. 순종 뒤에는 하나님의 돌보심이 반드시 옵니다.
In our wilderness today, let us stand on the Word, walk in obedience, and choose the kingdom of God. The testing is not forever, and after obedience, God’s care will surely come.
하나님은 오늘도 말씀하십니다. “너는 내 자녀다. 서두르지 말아라. 내가 너를 붙들고 끝까지 책임지겠다.”
God speaks even today: “You are My child. Do not rush. I will hold you and carry you to the end.”

Prayer After the Sermon
하나님 아버지, 광야의 자리에서도 우리를 이끄시는 주님을 신뢰합니다.
Heavenly Father, we trust You who lead us even in the wilderness.
떡이 아니라 말씀으로 살게 하시고, 만용이 아니라 순종으로 걷게 하옵소서.
Help us live not by bread alone but by Your Word, and walk in obedience, not presumption.
세상의 영광이 아니라 하나님의 나라를 먼저 구하게 하옵소서.
Teach us to seek Your kingdom first, not the glory of this world.
급할수록 주님을 더 붙들게 하시고, 흔들릴수록 십자가를 바라보게 하소서.
When we feel rushed, help us hold onto You more firmly; when we are shaken, fix our eyes on the cross.
오늘도 말씀 위에 서게 하시고, 끝까지 우리를 붙드시는 주님의 손을 믿게 하옵소서.
Let us stand on Your Word today and trust Your hand that carries us to the end.
