God Gives His Word to the Church
요한복음(John) 17:1–26
오늘은 교회의 창립을 기억하고, 새로운 임직자들을 세우는 날입니다. 사람이 교회를 시작하는 것 같아 보여도, 사실 교회를 세우시는 분은 하나님이십니다.
Today, we remember the founding of our church and appoint new church officers. Although it may appear that people begin churches, in truth, it is God who establishes them.
그런데, 하나님께서 교회를 세우실 때 가장 먼저 주시는 선물은 바로 말씀입니다. 요한복음 17장에서 예수님은 십자가를 앞두고, 하나님께 받은 말씀을 제자들에게 전하셨다고 고백하십니다.
And when God builds a church, the first gift He gives is His Word. In John 17, Jesus, facing the cross, confesses that He has given the words He received from the Father to His disciples.
그리고 그 말씀을 통해 제자들이 영생을 얻게 되었다고 말씀하십니다. 오늘 본문은 바로 말씀으로 세워지는 교회, 말씀으로 사명을 받는 일꾼, 말씀으로 하나 되는 공동체의 비전을 보여줍니다.
He also says that through that Word, the disciples have received eternal life. Today’s passage shows us a vision of a church built by the Word, workers commissioned by the Word, and a community united through the Word.
1. 하나님은 교회에 말씀을 주셔서 영생을 얻게 하십니다(1–8).
God Gives His Word to the Church so That We May Have Eternal Life (1–8)
1-8절의 말씀을 요약하면, 예수님은 하나님께 기도하며, 이제 때가 되었으니 자신을 영화롭게 하셔서 하나님께 영광이 되게 해달라고 하십니다.
In verses 1–8, Jesus prays to the Father, saying the hour has come, and asks to be glorified so that He may glorify the Father.
예수님은 하나님께 받은 사명을 이루었고, 하나님께서 주신 사람들에게 하나님의 말씀을 전하셨습니다. 그래서 그들은 예수님이 하나님께로부터 온 분임을 믿게 되었습니다.
Jesus fulfilled the mission He received from the Father and gave the Word to those the Father had given Him. As a result, they believed that Jesus came from God.
3절은 영생이 하나님과의 인격적 관계 안에서 주어지는 선물임을 보여줍니다. 여기서 ‘안다’는 동사는 헬라어로 기노스코입니다.
Verse 3 shows that eternal life is a gift that comes through a personal relationship with God. The word "know" in this verse is ginōskō in Greek.
이 단어는 단순한 지식 전달을 뜻하는 것이 아니라, 경험을 통한 인격적인 앎을 뜻합니다. 즉, 영생은 정보를 아는 것이 아니라, 말씀을 통해 하나님과 관계를 맺고 살아가는 것입니다.
This word does not refer to knowing facts, but to a deep, experiential, relational knowing. Eternal life is not about having information, but about living in relationship with God through His Word.
예수님은 십자가를 지시기 전 마지막 기도에서, 제자들이 아버지와 아들을 알게 된 것이 영생이라고 말하십니다.
In His final prayer before the cross, Jesus says that the disciples' knowledge of the Father and the Son is eternal life.
이 앎은 말씀을 통하여 이루어졌습니다. 그러므로 말씀은 단순한 교훈이나 정보가 아니라, 하나님 자신을 드러내는 통로요, 우리를 구원으로 이끄는 생명의 도구입니다.
This relationship was made possible through the Word. Therefore, the Word is not merely a set of teachings or facts, but the channel through which God reveals Himself and brings us to salvation.
6-8절에 의하면, 말씀은 예수 그리스도를 통해 교회에 전달되었습니다. 여기서 예수님은 말씀을 아버지로부터 위임받은 것으로 보고 계십니다.
According to verses 6–8, the Word was given to the church through Jesus Christ. Here, Jesus views the Word as something entrusted to Him by the Father.
즉, 교회는 예수님이 하늘로부터 받은 말씀을 듣고 그 말씀을 믿은 자들의 공동체입니다. 그러므로 말씀이 없으면 교회는 존재할 수 없습니다.
In other words, the church is the community of those who have heard and believed the Word Jesus received from heaven. Therefore, without the Word, the church cannot exist.
말씀은 교회를 존재하게 하고, 교회의 본질을 규정합니다. 하나님께서 교회에 주신 첫 선물은 건물도 아니고 조직도 아니며, 말씀입니다.
The Word gives the church its life and defines its very nature. The first gift God gave to the church was not a building or a system—but the Word.
우리는 말씀을 통해 부르심을 받았고, 말씀을 통해 생명을 얻었고, 말씀 위에 교회가 세워졌습니다. 교회 창립의 감사는 말씀의 씨앗이 떨어져 이 공동체가 자라온 역사에 대한 감사입니다.
Through the Word, we were called, received life, and the church was established upon it. Our gratitude for the church's founding is thanksgiving for the Word-seed that was planted and grew into this community.
또한 임직은 그 말씀을 따라 교회를 섬기고 돌볼 새로운 일꾼을 세우시는 하나님의 방식입니다. 그러므로 성도 여러분, 우리가 말씀을 떠나면 교회도, 생명도 사라집니다.
And ordination is God's way of raising new workers to serve and care for the church according to His Word. Therefore, beloved members, if we depart from the Word, both the church and life itself will fade away.
교회가 살아있다는 증거는 말씀이 선포되고, 그 말씀에 응답하는 삶이 있다는 것입니다. 오늘 임직 받는 분들은 말씀을 따라 살고, 말씀으로 섬기며, 말씀을 전달하는 사명자입니다.
The evidence that a church is alive is that the Word is preached and people respond with obedient lives. Those being ordained today are called to live by the Word, serve through the Word, and proclaim the Word.
오늘 우리는 창립을 기념하며, 교회를 향해 하나님께서 주신 말씀의 선물을 다시 붙들어야 하겠습니다. 그리고 임직자들은 그 말씀을 이어갈 다음 세대를 위한 믿음의 통로가 되어야 합니다.
As we commemorate the church's founding, let us once again hold tightly to the gift of the Word given to us. And the newly ordained must become vessels of faith who pass the Word to the next generation.
하나님은 말씀을 통해 교회를 세우셨고, 지금도 그 말씀으로 우리를 영생에 이르게 하시기 때문입니다.
For God founded the church through the Word, and even now, leads us to eternal life through that same Word.
2. 하나님은 교회에 말씀을 주셔서 거룩하게 하십니다 (9–19)
God Makes the Church Holy Through His Word (9–19)
9-19절의 말씀을 요약하면, 예수님은 제자들을 위해 기도하시며, 하나님께서 그들을 보호해 주시고 악에서 지켜 주시기를 간구하십니다.
In verses 9–19, Jesus prays for His disciples, asking God to protect them and keep them from evil.
또한 예수님은 제자들이 하나님의 말씀으로 거룩하게 되고, 세상 속에서도 진리를 따라 살기를 원하십니다.
He also desires that His disciples be sanctified by the Word and live according to truth while remaining in the world.
예수님은 십자가를 앞두고 세상 전체가 아닌, 제자들을 위해 집중적으로 중보기도를 하십니다. 왜냐하면 이 제자들이 하나님의 말씀을 받은 자들, 곧 교회의 기초가 되기 때문입니다.
Before going to the cross, Jesus does not pray for the whole world, but intercedes specifically for His disciples. This is because these disciples are the ones who received God's Word and would become the foundation of the church.
교회는 단지 '사람이 모인 집단'이 아니라, 말씀을 통해 세상과 구별된 공동체입니다. 이 "구별됨"이 바로 거룩함입니다.
The church is not merely a gathering of people, but a community set apart from the world through the Word. This “set-apartness” is what we call holiness.
거룩은 죄와 세속으로부터 구별되어 하나님께 드려진 상태를 말합니다. 14-15절에 의하면, 교회의 거룩함은 세상으로부터의 분리가 아니라 말씀에 의한 구별입니다.
Holiness means being separated from sin and worldliness, and being dedicated to God. According to verses 14–15, the church's holiness is not about physical separation from the world but being set apart by the Word.
왜냐하면, 예수님은 제자들이 세상과 완전히 단절되기를 원하지 않으셨기 때문입니다. 예수님은 오히려 그들이 세상 속에 있으면서도 거룩함을 잃지 않도록, 말씀에 의한 구별이 이루어지기를 원하셨습니다.
Jesus did not want His disciples to be removed from the world. Rather, He wanted them to remain in the world while maintaining holiness through the Word.
교회는 “세상 속에 있으나 세상에 속하지 않은 자”이며, “말씀에 의해 생각과 삶의 기준이 달라진 자”입니다. 이것이 바로 말씀으로 인해 거룩해진 교회의 모습입니다.
The church is a people “in the world but not of the world,” whose thoughts and lives are shaped by the Word. This is the image of a church made holy through the Word.
임직자는 교회 안에서만이 아니라, 세상 속에서도 거룩한 영향력을 끼쳐야 할 사명자입니다.
Church officers are called not only to serve inside the church but also to be a holy influence in the world.
교회가 세상을 닮으면 영향력을 잃고, 세상 속에서 말씀으로 구별될 때 오히려 진정한 빛과 소금의 역할을 감당하게 됩니다.
When the church conforms to the world, it loses its influence. But when it is set apart by the Word, it becomes the true light and salt of the world.
17절에 의하면, 말씀은 교회를 거룩하게 하는 하나님의 도구입니다.
According to verse 17, the Word is God’s instrument for sanctifying the church.
하나님의 말씀은 우리를 세상과 죄로부터 구별해내는 기준이며, 말씀이 심령을 꿰뚫고 새롭게 하여, 하나님께 합당한 자로 변화시킵니다.
God’s Word is the standard that separates us from the world and from sin, It pierces our hearts, renews our spirits, and transforms us into people who are pleasing to God.
그러므로 교회는 말씀을 들을 뿐 아니라, 그 말씀에 의해 정결해지고 세상 속에 거룩함을 드러내는 공동체가 되어야 합니다.
Therefore, the church must not only hear the Word but also be cleansed by it and reflect holiness in the world.
오늘 임직 받는 분들은 먼저 말씀으로 다듬어지고, 교회를 말씀으로 섬기며, 삶으로 말씀을 보여야 하는 책임자들입니다.
Those being ordained today must first be shaped by the Word, serve the church through the Word, and display the Word through their lives.
교회가 말씀 없이 거룩해질 수는 없습니다. 오히려 말씀을 떠난 활동은 세속화로 이어집니다.
The church cannot be holy without the Word. In fact, ministry apart from the Word leads to worldliness.
임직자는 말씀의 기준으로 자신을 구별하고, 그 기준을 공동체에 적용해 줄 수 있는 모범이 되어야 합니다.
Church officers must be examples who separate themselves by the standard of the Word and apply that standard to the church community.
오늘 임직 받는 분들이 말씀의 사람이 되어, 교회의 거룩함을 지켜가는 진리의 동역자가 되기를 축복합니다.
May those being ordained today become people of the Word and faithful coworkers in preserving the holiness of the church.
예수님은 그 거룩함을 위해 기도하셨고, 오늘도 교회를 향한 하나님의 뜻은 말씀을 따라 거룩함을 회복하는 것입니다.
Jesus prayed for this holiness, and even today, God’s will for the church is to be sanctified through His Word.
우리 교회가 창립의 기초인 말씀 위에 서서, 말씀으로 거룩해지고, 새로운 임직자들이 그 거룩함의 본을 세우는 축복의 통로가 되기를 기도합니다.
May our church stand on the foundation of the Word on which it was built and grow in holiness through the Word, and may the new officers become vessels of blessing who set an example of holiness for others to follow.
3. 하나님은 교회에 말씀을 주셔서 하나 되게 하십니다 (20–26)
God Gives His Word to the Church So That We May Be One (20–26)
20-26절의 말씀을 요약하면, 예수님은 제자들뿐 아니라, 제자들의 말을 통해 믿게 될 모든 사람들을 위해 기도하십니다.
In verses 20–26, Jesus prays not only for His disciples but also for all who will believe through their message.
그들이 하나 되어 하나님과 예수님의 사랑을 세상에 나타내고, 예수님의 영광을 함께 누리며, 하나님의 사랑 안에 거하기를 원하십니다.
He desires that they may be one, reveal God’s love to the world, share in Jesus’ glory, and dwell in the love of the Father.
예수님은 미래의 교회를 위하여 ‘하나 됨’을 기도하셨습니다.
Jesus prayed for the unity of the future church.
21절은 “아버지여 아버지께서 내 안에, 내가 아버지 안에 있는 것 같이 그들도 다 하나가 되어 우리 안에 있게 하사 세상으로 아버지께서 나를 보내신 것을 믿게 하옵소서”라고 말합니다.
Verse 21 says, “that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you... so that the world may believe that you have sent me.”
예수님은 제자들뿐 아니라 말씀을 통해 믿게 될 후대의 모든 성도들, 곧 오늘의 교회를 위해 기도하십니다. 그런데, 그 기도의 핵심은 “하나 됨”입니다.
Jesus prays not only for the disciples but for all future believers—including the church today—who will come to faith through the Word. At the center of this prayer is unity.
예수님과 하나님 아버지 사이의 연합처럼, 성도들도 말씀 안에서 하나님과, 그리고 서로 간에 영적 일치를 이루어야 함을 강조하십니다.
Just as Jesus and the Father are united, so believers are called to spiritual unity with God and with one another through the Word.
여기서 하나 됨은 인위적인 조직의 통일이나 감정적 일치가 아니라, 진리의 말씀을 통한 영적 연합입니다.
This unity is not based on institutional structures or emotions, but on spiritual unity through the truth of the Word.
말씀은 교회의 연합을 이끄는 기준입니다. 예수님은 제자들에게 말씀을 통해 주어진 하나님의 영광을 나누어 주셨고, 그 영광 안에서 하나 됨의 목적을 말씀하십니다.
The Word is the standard that leads the church into unity. Jesus gave His disciples the glory received from the Father through the Word, so that they may become one.
교회의 분열은 말씀의 중심을 잃을 때 생깁니다. 그러나 교회가 말씀을 붙들면, 서로 다름을 뛰어넘어 주 안에서 하나 되는 공동체가 됩니다.
Division in the church arises when it loses its focus on the Word. But when the church holds fast to the Word, it transcends differences and becomes one in the Lord.
말씀은 우리를 동일한 믿음의 기초 위에 세우고, 그 말씀 안에서 서로를 이해하게 하고, 용납하게 하며, 함께 사명을 감당하게 합니다.
The Word establishes us on a common foundation of faith, enabling us to understand, accept, and serve together.
교회의 하나 됨은 말씀 안에서의 일치이며, 세상에 하나님을 드러내는 증거입니다. 하나 됨은 세상에 하나님을 증언하는 교회의 능력입니다.
Unity in the church is agreement in the Word—and it becomes a testimony to the world of who God is. Unity is the church’s power to witness God to the world.
예수님은 교회의 하나 됨이 단지 교회 안의 평안을 위한 것이 아니라, 세상에 하나님의 사랑과 예수님의 정체성을 증거하는 선교적 기능이라고 말씀하십니다.
Jesus says that the purpose of this unity is not just inner peace but to declare the Father’s love and Christ’s identity to the world—it is missional.
연합하는 교회는 그 자체로 복음의 메시지를 세상에 전하는 증거입니다. 반대로 분열하는 교회는 세상에 혼란을 주고, 복음의 능력을 가리게 됩니다.
A united church is, by itself, a living testimony of the gospel to the world. On the other hand, a divided church confuses the world and obscures the power of the gospel.
임직자는 교회 안에서 연합의 모범이 되어야 합니다. 이 말은 다양한 사람들 속에서 말씀을 기준 삼아 관계를 조율하고, 사랑으로 품는 리더십을 말합니다.
Those being ordained must be examples of unity within the church. This means leading with love—navigating differences with the Word as the standard and embracing others with grace.
교회 창립 감사는 우리가 하나님의 말씀 안에서 모였고, 서로 하나 되어 하나님 나라를 위해 부름받았음을 기억하는 날입니다.
The celebration of the church’s founding reminds us that we have gathered through the Word and are called together for the kingdom of God.
교회가 하나 되기 위해 필요한 것은 좋은 성격이나 문화가 아니라, 말씀을 중심에 두는 것입니다.
What the church needs for unity is not better personalities or shared culture—but a shared commitment to the Word.
예수님은 우리를 위해 기도하셨고, 그 기도의 핵심은 말씀을 통해 영생을 얻게 하시고, 거룩하게 하시며, 하나 되게 하시는 것입니다.
Jesus prayed for us—and at the heart of that prayer was that we would receive eternal life, be sanctified, and become one through the Word.
이 세 가지는 교회의 존재 이유이며, 오늘 임직자들에게 주시는 하나님의 부르심입니다.
These three—life, holiness, and unity—are the very purpose of the church, and God’s calling to those being ordained today.
말씀을 붙들 때 교회는 생명을 얻고, 정결하게 되며, 하나 되어 세상에 하나님을 드러냅니다.
When we hold onto the Word, the church gains life, becomes holy, and displays God’s glory to the world.
우리는 이 사명을 따라 창립의 은혜를 기억하고, 새로운 일꾼들과 함께 말씀 위에 세워진 교회로 더욱 굳게 서기를 소망합니다.
Let us remember the grace of our founding, and with our newly ordained workers, stand firm as a church built on the Word.

Dear beloved members, today we stand in the grace-filled moment of remembering the founding of Arizona Korean Presbyterian Church and appointing new church officers.
요한복음 17장에서 예수님은 십자가를 앞두고 교회를 위해 기도하셨습니다. 그 기도의 중심에는 바로 하나님께서 교회에 주신 ‘말씀’이 있었습니다.
In John 17, Jesus prayed for the church before going to the cross. At the center of His prayer was the Word given by the Father.
하나님은 말씀을 통해 우리에게 영생을 얻게 하셨습니다. 말씀은 단지 교훈이 아니라, 하나님을 알고 믿게 하며, 예수 그리스도를 통해 참 생명을 누리게 하는 은혜의 통로입니다.
God gave us eternal life through His Word. The Word is not just teaching—it is the means through which we know God, believe, and experience true life in Christ.
하나님은 말씀을 통해 우리를 거룩하게 하십니다. 세상 속에 있지만 세상에 속하지 않은 교회는, 말씀을 따라 살아감으로써 구별된 존재로 하나님께 드려집니다.
God sanctifies us through His Word. Though we are in the world, the church is not of it. By living according to the Word, we become holy and set apart for God.
하나님은 말씀을 통해 우리를 하나 되게 하십니다. 서로 다른 배경, 생각, 성격을 가진 이들이 오직 하나님의 말씀 안에서 하나가 될 때, 그 모습이 세상에 하나님을 드러내는 복음의 증거가 됩니다.
God also makes us one through His Word. When people of diverse backgrounds, thoughts, and personalities are united in the Word, they become a living testimony of the gospel to the world.
그러므로 교회는 말씀으로 시작하고, 말씀으로 세워지며, 말씀으로 미래를 향해 나아가야 합니다.
Therefore, the church must begin, be built, and move forward by the Word.
이제 우리 모두가 하나님의 말씀 앞에 다시 서서, 창립의 은혜를 기억하고, 새로운 사명을 감당하며, 말씀으로 살아 숨 쉬는 교회, 말씀으로 세상을 변화시키는 교회로 함께 나아가기를 소망합니다.
Now let us all stand before God’s Word once again—remembering our founding grace, embracing new callings, and becoming a living church that breathes the Word and transforms the world.

사랑과 은혜가 충만하신 하나님 아버지, 오늘 우리 교회가 창립의 은혜를 기억하며, 주의 몸 된 교회를 세우기 위해 새로운 일꾼들을 세우게 하심을 진심으로 감사드립니다.
God of love and abundant grace, We thank You for allowing us to remember the grace of our church’s founding and to appoint new servants to build up the body of Christ.
주님께서 교회에 말씀을 주셔서 영생을 얻게 하시고, 거룩하게 하시며, 하나 되게 하신 줄 믿습니다.
We believe that through Your Word, You have given us eternal life, sanctified us, and made us one.

Let them remember that this office is not just a function, but a sacred mission to serve and live according to Your Word.

Make them instruments of unity in the church, True workers who are committed not to their own benefit, but to Your glory and the church’s good.
이들이 연약할 때 말씀으로 세워 주시고, 교회를 섬길 때 말씀으로 판단하게 하시며, 삶의 자리에서도 말씀을 따라 진실하게 살아가는 모범이 되게 하여 주옵소서.
When they are weak, strengthen them with Your Word. Let them discern with the Word as they serve.
Let them be examples who live out the Word truthfully in all areas of life.
이 거룩한 임직의 순간이 주의 몸 된 교회가 말씀으로 다시 살아나고, 복음의 빛을 비추는 교회 되게 하여 주옵소서.
May this holy ordination be a new beginning where Your church is revived through the Word, And may this church shine the light of the gospel in this region and to the next generation.
